In a September 23, 2026 account of his own model-drift harness, Erik Hill found that two tasks labeled factual recall could mark an answer wrong even when it contained the right fact. The issue was the exact-match scoring: extra explanation, markdown, or punctuation made an otherwise correct short answer fail. Hill’s deliberately self-critical conclusion is: “The suspect is the probe, not the models it measures.”
What the harness counted as wrong
Hill describes fact-element with the prompt “What is the chemical symbol for gold? Two letters only.” Its grader lowercased the response, trimmed whitespace, and then compared the result exactly with au. A full sentence or markdown emphasis around the right symbol therefore failed, even though the requested fact appeared in the answer. [Erik Hill’s account]

For fact-planet, Hill reports that GPT-4o mini answered “Mercury.” and was counted wrong against the expected short answer. The period alone was enough to make the output differ from the expected form. By contrast, the control task fact-capital said, “Answer with only the city name.” Hill reports that models returned Tokyo exactly on that task.

These are figures from Hill’s account of his own suite, not an independent benchmark study or findings from model providers. The project repository describes a mechanically graded, 35-task suite with capability breakdowns, but that project documentation is not independent verification of the historical run counts. [Model-drift repository]
Hill also reports that fact-element failed on 46 separate days across at least three providers. Those recurring results make the grading issue worth inspecting within this harness; they do not establish how models generally behave on short-answer questions.

Why two short-answer tasks affected the score
In Hill’s calculation, the smallest single-task increment in the suite was 100/35, or 2.86 score points. The fact-element and fact-planet tasks together accounted for 5.7 points. As a result, their pass-or-fail rules influenced both the overall score and the suite’s factual-recall breakdown. A reader treating that category as a measure of knowledge could therefore be comparing response formatting as well as factual retrieval.
This consequence is specific to Hill’s suite and scoring design. It does not mean every factual-recall benchmark has the same problem. It illustrates a broader evaluation distinction: a task tests more than recall whenever success also depends on returning the answer in a particular shape.

What may explain the pattern
Hill suggests that wording such as “Two letters only” or “One word” may not operate like an explicit instruction to return only a token. That is a hypothesis about the prompt contrast, not a demonstrated explanation of model cognition. What the reported results establish is narrower: some responses included additional text or punctuation, and the strict grader rejected them.
The pattern was not fixed. Hill reports 26 failures in 49 fact-element runs for Grok 4.5, and says Claude Sonnet 5’s fact-planet behavior differed between historical runs and a later live call. The account also describes nine live calls through the probe’s own call path. That small set can help surface outputs to inspect, but cannot establish a universal rule about how models interpret “only” or answer-length wording. Hill says the results are solid while the causal explanation remains uncertain.

How to audit a short-answer exact-match task
For anyone maintaining exact-match graders on short answers, Hill’s practical recommendation is: “check what your passing models actually return, not just whether they passed.” A useful audit puts the prompt, raw response, normalization, expected answer, and grading rule side by side:
Quick Recap
Best Value
- FACT: Includes factual playing cards that are FUNNY, SERIOUS, GROSS, COOL, HISTORICAL, SCIENTIFIC, GEOGRAPHICAL & MORE
- FIRE: Become the "Fire Holder" and get creative by STUMPING your opponents. The more players you STUMP, the more you score to WIN!
- TRIVIA with a TWIST: 3 Facts and 1 Fire - It is your job as the "Fire Holder" to create "Fire Facts"(Phony Facts) to stump your opponents.
- Read the prompt literally. Decide whether the task is meant to measure factual recall, compliance with a response-shape instruction, or both.
- Inspect raw outputs. Check whether failures contain the correct fact alongside a sentence, markdown, or punctuation, and whether passing answers hide other inconsistencies.
- Trace normalization and comparison. Record exactly what the grader trims, changes, or accepts before comparing an answer with the expected value.
- Check the category description. If exact form is part of the test, make that visible to people interpreting the task or category score.
- Compare fixes against the intended skill. Accepting more output forms may reduce format-driven failures, but could also make ignored instructions invisible. Hill discusses retagging or describing the tasks more accurately; he does not announce a tested remedy.
