‘My eyes hurt’ searches spike on Google following solar eclipse

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Searches like My eyes hurt tend to spike on Google after a solar eclipse because a lot of people suddenly report discomfort, light sensitivity, blurry vision, or a gritty feeling. That timing lines up with when many viewers realize they looked at the sun longer—or closer—than they intended.

If your eyes hurt after watching an eclipse, treat it seriously. Eye pain can come from multiple causes, but eclipse-related retinal and corneal injury is a real possibility, and early medical assessment matters.

What the spike on Google usually means

Google trend spikes don’t prove a single cause, but they often reflect a pattern: many people try eclipse viewing on the day itself, then report symptoms afterward. The most common reasons behind the spike include unsafe viewing (or partially unsafe viewing), forgetting to use certified protection, and assuming that sunglasses, cameras, or “quick looks” are harmless.

Another factor is symptom timing. Some problems cause immediate discomfort (especially corneal irritation), while others become more noticeable hours later (especially retina-related issues).

Can eclipse viewing cause eye pain?

Yes. Looking at the sun during an eclipse can injure both the eye surface and deeper retinal tissue, depending on how you watched and for how long. Even when the moon covers most of the sun, portions of intense sunlight still reach your eye.

Photokeratitis and solar retinopathy (plain-language distinction)

These terms get thrown around, so here’s the practical difference:

  • Photokeratitis: irritation or “sunburn” of the cornea (front surface). It often causes pain, tearing, redness, and a gritty or burning sensation.
  • Solar retinopathy: injury to the retina (back of the eye). It may cause blurred vision, distortion (straight lines look wavy), a dark spot, or reduced central vision.

Some people experience both, especially if viewing was prolonged or protection was inadequate.

Why symptoms can show up hours later

Your eyes may feel “fine” at first. For corneal irritation, discomfort can start later as the tissue reacts. For retinal issues, the damage may not be obvious until you notice vision changes—often hours after exposure.

Immediate steps if your eyes hurt right now

Start with safety and triage. Your goal is to avoid further light exposure and prevent the situation from getting worse.

Stop all further viewing and give your eyes rest

  1. Stop looking at bright light immediately.
  2. Move indoors or to shaded lighting.
  3. Use ambient lighting instead of bright overhead glare.

If you wear contacts, remove them to reduce friction and irritation.

Do not try home remedies that can make it worse

Avoid these common traps:

  • No rubbing (it can worsen corneal injury).
  • No random antibiotic drops unless prescribed.
  • No numbing drops bought without guidance—temporary relief can delay care.
  • No DIY “filters” (like doubling up sunglasses) to “test” your vision.

What to do with contacts, drops, and eye makeup

Practical steps:

  • Contacts: remove immediately. Don’t reinsert until cleared by a clinician.
  • Eye makeup: stop using it until your eyes feel normal and you’ve been evaluated if symptoms persist.
  • Lubricating drops: preservative-free artificial tears are generally the safest short-term comfort option, but they don’t treat retina damage.

If you’re wearing contact lenses and symptoms are significant, it’s a stronger reason to seek care sooner rather than later.

When to seek urgent medical care

Because eclipse-related injury can involve the retina, you shouldn’t “wait it out” if you have warning signs.

Go to emergency/urgent care today for these symptoms

  • Vision changes: blurred vision, dark spot, or new distortion
  • Severe pain, moderate-to-severe light sensitivity, or inability to keep the eye open
  • Rapidly worsening symptoms over hours
  • One eye is much worse than the other after viewing
  • Contact lens wear combined with pain, redness, or light sensitivity

If you have any of these, an ophthalmology or emergency evaluation is the correct move, even if you think it was “just a moment.”

Book an urgent ophthalmology visit even if pain is mild

If you have mild symptoms but suspect eclipse viewing (especially without certified protection), book an urgent eye exam. Retinal injury may not be obvious at first, and doctors can evaluate with tools like slit lamp and retinal imaging.

How doctors evaluate eclipse-related eye injury

A clinician will try to determine whether you have corneal irritation, retinal injury, inflammation, or a separate condition such as conjunctivitis.

Likely tests you may hear about

Assessment What it checks
Visual acuity How well you see at distance and near
Slit-lamp exam Corneal surface and anterior eye inflammation
Fluorescein staining Corneal abrasions or epithelial defects
Fundus exam Retina and optic nerve appearance
Optical coherence tomography (OCT) Retinal layer detail (common for suspected solar retinopathy)
Visual field testing / Amsler grid Central distortion or scotomas (blind spots)

These evaluations guide treatment decisions and help confirm whether the retina is involved.

What you can do to reduce risk next time

The safest approach is simple: never look at the sun unless you’re using certified protection designed for solar viewing.

Use certified solar viewers or proper eclipse glasses

For eclipse viewing, use solar viewers or eclipse glasses that meet recognized safety standards (commonly based on ISO 12312-2). Don’t rely on “fashion sunglasses,” DIY filters, or unknown packaging claims.

  • Inspect the lenses for scratches, pinholes, or damage.
  • Put them on before the first glance.
  • Keep them on the entire time you look.

Also, never look at the eclipse through a pair of sunglasses as a primary filter.

Safe ways to watch without looking at the sun directly

If you want safer viewing methods that don’t put your eyes under bright direct sun:

  1. Projection method: use a handheld projector or telescope/binocular projection technique (project the image onto a screen, not into your eyes).
  2. Live broadcast: watch coverage on a TV or in a controlled light environment.
  3. Telescopes/binoculars with proper filters: only if you have certified solar filters rated for direct solar viewing.

Phones and cameras don’t make it safe. Unless your optics are specifically filtered for direct solar viewing, you still shouldn’t view through the device.

Common myths and mistakes

These are the patterns that keep showing up in both reports and online searches after eclipses.

“Sunglasses are enough”

No. Sunglasses reduce visible glare but don’t necessarily block the harmful ultraviolet and infrared radiation levels that can injure the eye.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“My phone camera will protect my eyes”

Often it doesn’t. Many people end up looking at the phone screen or through unfiltered optics. Even if the device records something, your eyes still need direct protection.

“A quick glance can’t hurt”

In some cases it can. The risk depends on how long you look and the intensity at that moment. With a solar eclipse, the sun may look less bright, but it’s still bright enough to cause injury.

Troubleshooting: what if the main guidance doesn’t help

Not every “eye pain after eclipse” story is eclipse-related. Use symptoms to decide how urgently to seek care.

If pain improves but vision feels off

Pain improvement doesn’t rule out retinal injury. If you notice blurry central vision, a dark spot, or new distortions (straight lines look bent), get an urgent ophthalmology evaluation even if the discomfort is better.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If both eyes hurt after group viewing

Coordinated symptoms can happen when multiple viewers used the same non-certified viewing method or had a shared viewing moment without protection. If both eyes hurt and you have light sensitivity, that supports corneal involvement—but you still need a medical exam if symptoms are more than mild or don’t resolve quickly.

We will then experience a once-in-a-generation Total Solar Eclipse on April 8th 2024 - the only USA total eclipse until August 23rd, 2044. You will be amazed as the moon completely blocks the sun during Totality, which lasts but mere minutes. Soluna Glasses are what you need to safely view both of these eclipses.

If you also have redness, discharge, or persistent irritation

That pattern may suggest infection, allergy, or irritation unrelated to the retina. It can still be serious—especially if you wear contacts. Seek care promptly rather than trying to self-diagnose.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does eclipse-related eye pain last?

Corneal irritation can improve over a short period, but many cases need medical evaluation because the symptoms can overlap with more serious injuries. If pain persists beyond about 24 hours, or if vision changes occur, get checked urgently.

Can I test my vision at home with an Amsler grid?

You can use an Amsler grid to detect distortion or missing areas in central vision. It’s useful as a screening tool, but it doesn’t replace an eye exam. If you see new distortion or a dark spot, seek urgent ophthalmology care.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if only one eye feels painful?

One-eye symptoms can occur if you briefly removed protection or shielded one side. Treat it as a warning sign—especially if vision is affected. Arrange an urgent evaluation.

Are lubricating drops enough?

Lubricating drops may help comfort if the surface is irritated. They don’t treat retinal injury. If you have vision changes, significant pain, or light sensitivity, you still need a professional assessment.

Bottom Line

When My eyes hurt searches spike after a solar eclipse, it usually reflects real eye discomfort and—sometimes—serious injury from unsafe viewing. If your eyes hurt and you notice any vision change, don’t wait: stop further exposure and seek urgent eye care.

For future eclipses, the best prevention is certified solar viewing protection, not sunglasses or improvised filters. If you’re careful about how you watch, you dramatically reduce the odds that a fun event turns into an eye emergency.
