Check those layers in order: confirm the service and application are running, inspect logs, verify the platform connection and event permissions, then test a reply through the affected channel.
What “always on” does—and does not—mean
“Always on” describes a hosting or process-lifecycle goal. It does not prove that the bot’s code is healthy, that its connection to Discord or Telegram is active, or that messages are reaching it. Telegram bots connect to the owner’s server, while Discord bots using the Gateway depend on a persistent WebSocket connection. Those are separate failure points (Telegram bot introduction; Discord Gateway documentation).

Because the platform, runtime, host, and symptoms are not specified, there is no single command or root cause that applies to every bot. Follow the checks below for the part of your stack that matches.

Start at the host or service manager rather than changing application code. Check the bot’s current status, then review its recent application logs for an exit, restart, startup failure, or other error. A running container runtime does not by itself establish that the bot process inside a container is healthy.

If the bot uses Docker, Docker recommends docker info as an operating-system-independent check of whether Docker is running. Service-status utilities and process tools such as ps or top can help establish runtime or process health. When ordinary logs do not show what is happening, enable the relevant runtime’s debug logging. Docker’s daemon troubleshooting guide covers these checks.
2. If the process is alive, inspect the platform connection
Discord Gateway
A live Discord bot process can still lose its Gateway connection. Discord’s Gateway uses persistent WebSockets, which require more connection handling than a simple HTTP request. Check the WebSocket lifecycle and whether heartbeat acknowledgements are arriving (Discord Gateway documentation).

The Gateway sends a Hello event with the heartbeat interval. The client must use the interval it receives, send heartbeats, and handle acknowledgements. If an acknowledgement does not arrive, Discord’s documentation says the client should close the connection and reconnect. Resuming may replay missed events from the last sequence number. The 45,000-millisecond interval shown in the documentation is an example payload, not a universal setting; do not hard-code it in place of the value sent by the live Gateway.
Other platforms
For a platform other than Discord, check its own connection status, reconnect behavior, and logs rather than assuming that a healthy local process means the remote connection is healthy. The exact checks depend on the platform and bot implementation.

3. Confirm that the platform delivers the messages you expect
Discord intents
Discord Gateway intents determine which events an application receives, and most events require the relevant intent. Confirm that the bot is configured for the events it needs; a connected bot can appear silent if it never receives the event that should trigger a reply (Discord Gateway documentation).
Telegram group privacy
Telegram’s default group privacy mode limits which group messages a bot receives. For most bots it is enabled by default; group administrators are an exception. Check whether the bot was addressed in a way it can receive before treating the symptom as a stopped process. Telegram recommends disabling privacy mode only when necessary (Telegram bot features).

4. Check credentials and the channel’s authentication path
Test with the credentials, authentication flow, and channel implicated by the failure. Microsoft’s general bot troubleshooting guidance recommends checking authentication and testing the channels the bot will use (Microsoft bot troubleshooting).

For Telegram, the bot token authorizes Bot API requests and should be stored securely (Telegram bot introduction). Do not rotate a token merely because the bot is silent: if you replace it, the running deployment must also be updated or authentication will fail. First look for evidence of an authentication problem in the logs or API responses.

5. Verify the host is not sleeping or stopping the service
Review the hosting plan and the process-lifecycle settings that apply to the deployed app. Some hosting platforms allow services not to be put to sleep. In Azure AI Bot Service Web Apps, the Always On setting is available on most, but not all, service plans. Verify that the current plan, app, and deployment are covered; a setting’s name alone does not establish that the service will stay awake (Microsoft bot troubleshooting).
6. Test recovery through the route users actually use
Once a likely fault is corrected, send a test message through the same channel and authentication path where the failure occurred. Confirm both sides of the exchange: that the bot receives the message and that it replies. Microsoft recommends testing with the Bot Framework Emulator before deployment, then checking connectivity and the actual channels after deployment (Microsoft bot troubleshooting).
Telegram describes status alerts for certain unusual reply patterns in popular bots. These alerts have a limited scope; treat them as one signal, not as a general-purpose uptime monitor (Telegram bot features).
What to compare when choosing a hosting setup
If you are deciding where or how to run a bot, compare the operational capabilities rather than assuming that a particular host guarantees reliability:
- Whether the service can run continuously without the host sleeping, and which plans support that behavior.
- Whether you can inspect both application and service logs and control restarts.
- Whether the bot handles platform disconnects, reconnects, and missed events.
- Whether you can test the deployed bot end to end in its intended channel and authentication context.
The available platform and infrastructure guidance does not establish a universal bot uptime rate, failure rate, hosting requirement, or provider ranking. A machine or networking accessory is not a general fix for a bot that may instead have a stopped process, lost connection, missing event permissions, or authentication fault.
