In a December 2023 EE Times article, Renesas connectivity-solutions vice president Chandana Pairla described activating payment mode by rotating the ring’s outer shell. Renesas says its PTX130W NFC transmitter sends charging power from the case to the ring; the design uses one NFC antenna for both charging and payments. That explains the engineering idea, not whether the ring is a reliable purchase today: payment support depends on country and bank, and Muse has acknowledged significant Gen 1 fulfillment and charging-case problems.
How Ring One turns a ring into a payment device
Pairla’s December 11, 2023 EE Times article describes Ring One as a health tracker that can also make contactless payments. The wearer rotates its outer shell to switch the ring into payment mode. The same account says the ring includes temperature sensing, an accelerometer and gyroscope, communicates with a phone over Bluetooth, and comes with a charging case.

The notable design choice is sharing NFC hardware. According to Renesas’s customer story, the PTX130W NFC transmitter sends power from the charging case to the ring, while the ring’s NFC antenna also supports payment. Muse co-founder Prathyusha Kamarajugadda explained the choice this way: “Because of our footprint constraints, Renesas was the only solution that was able to provide NFC charging.” That is Muse’s account of its design decision, not an independent comparison of available components.
The 2023 article also quotes Pairla: “Engineers at Muse realized that a finger is a better place to get a good signal and more accurate data.” Treat that as the rationale she offered for a finger-worn tracker, not proof that Ring One measures health more accurately than a watch or other wearable. No independent Ring One accuracy study or product test is established here.

Where Ring One payments are reported to work
Muse’s payment FAQ says tap-to-pay is live in listed European countries, Kuwait, South Africa, Thailand, Ukraine and the UAE. The company currently says it supports Mastercard only. Country availability and issuer participation can change, so check the FAQ and ask Muse which banks are onboarded in your region before relying on the ring for everyday payments.
If your bank is unsupported, Muse suggests Curve as a possible workaround. That does not guarantee eligibility or compatibility: confirm that Curve is available to you and that your card and region are supported before treating it as a solution.

What Muse says about Gen 1 problems
Muse’s Gen 1 status page, last updated August 28, 2026, acknowledges that Ring One shipped later than promised, that a batch of charging cases was defective, that refunds were processed slowly, and that the company could not ship to some regions. This is the manufacturer’s own account, and it matters to a purchase decision as much as the feature list.
On that page, Muse reports that it raised more than $1.2 million on Indiegogo in 2023, that roughly 10,000 units were in customers’ hands, and that 343 charging cases had reported issues out of 8,300 shipped. These are company-reported figures with the context and date stated by Muse, not independently audited rates or a guarantee of current delivery or support. The page also includes live counters and forecasts that may change.

Gen 1 and Gen 2: what is claimed to change
Muse’s Gen 2 comparison page describes a thinner profile, more rounded inner edges, a more durable coating, a redesigned charging case and improved sensor processing. These are manufacturer claims; they do not establish measured improvements in comfort, durability, battery life or health-data accuracy.
The same page says payment and Tesla unlocking are Gen 2 features and that they will also work with Gen 1 rings. That is Muse’s stated feature and rollout position, not independent confirmation that a specific customer’s ring, bank or region will have access. Check current availability with the company before buying either generation for one of those functions.

Price, sizing and delivery depend on the market
Muse’s India-localized Ring One product page lists a price of ₹28,999 and says each order includes a sizing kit. It offers several material and color options. The page says orders ship according to the current queue, with an expected date emailed after ordering. These details apply to the India-localized listing; they should not be assumed to describe prices, stock or delivery elsewhere.
