A reported system built for Gears of War: E-Day uses the Xbox Series S’s SSD as a selective extra tier for game data, potentially easing pressure on its limited memory. Pure Xbox’s 2026 account of Digital Foundry’s report says other game teams are interested, but it does not identify them or confirm that any have adopted the approach.
How the reported SSD-backed memory system works
According to Pure Xbox’s account of Digital Foundry’s report, The Coalition developed the system for Gears of War: E-Day with Xbox’s platform team and Advanced Technology Group. Selected data that is not currently needed can stay on the console’s SSD; data needed for the current moment is moved into system RAM.

The report likens the approach to paged virtual memory, but describes a selective implementation: developers choose subsets of data they believe can tolerate being fetched from storage. It is not a claim that the SSD simply becomes RAM. Pure Xbox relays Digital Foundry’s statement that the game’s environmental density would not have been possible on Series S without the system. What the reported numbers mean
Pure Xbox’s 2026 report, relaying Digital Foundry, describes the Series S as having 10GB of GDDR6. It says the technique trades a couple of gigabytes of SSD storage for about one gigabyte of additional usable system memory. Those are approximate reported figures, not independently verified measurements here; the account does not provide a detailed measurement method.

The trade is potentially useful when a game’s selected data can remain on disk without undermining the experience. But fetching data from storage has a performance cost if the method is overused, according to the report. It gives no quantified penalty, so the figures should not be read as a guaranteed memory gain for other games.
What the technique does—and does not—mean for E-Day
The same report says the team retained a 60FPS gameplay target and removed Lumen reflections as its major feature concession. A target is not a verified frame-rate result or guarantee, and the account does not establish that the memory system alone explains the target or the visual trade-off.

Other game teams are reportedly interested, but the available account names none. Interest does not establish adoption, a public development tool or SDK, or portability to third-party projects. The implementation is described as bespoke to E-Day, and its performance depends on choosing and tuning data that can safely remain on the SSD until needed.
