Multiple bitrate streaming provides the same video or audio in several encoded versions, so a compatible player can choose a version suited to the viewer’s connection and device. That collection of options is often called a bitrate ladder. The player’s process of selecting and changing versions is adaptive bitrate (ABR) streaming; simply offering multiple versions does not guarantee automatic adaptation.
What multiple bitrate streaming means
A streaming service or encoding workflow creates several renditions of the same content, typically at different bitrates and sometimes different resolutions or codecs. A playlist or manifest tells the player which renditions are available. The Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) describes the set of available options as “content variation” or a “bitrate ladder,” and distinguishes it from content selection: the client’s decision about what to play. IETF RFC 9317

For example, a service might make a lower-bitrate rendition and a higher-bitrate rendition available for the same scene. The higher option can preserve more detail when conditions allow; the lower option may be more reliable when the connection is constrained. The exact rungs depend on the service and its encoding choices—there is no universal bitrate ladder.
How adaptive bitrate streaming works
ABR is the player behavior that chooses from the available renditions and can change that choice during playback. In common HTTP-based delivery, the media is divided into segments. The player requests segments from a selected rendition, observes how playback and delivery are going, and may request later segments from a different one.

- Compact without compromises: The sleek design of Roku Streaming Stick won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, and it even powers from your TV alone, plugging into the back and staying out of sight. No wall outlet, no extra cords, no clutter.
- No more juggling remotes: Power up your TV, adjust the volume, and control your Roku device with one remote. Use your voice to quickly search, play entertainment, and more.
- Shows on the go: Take your TV to-go when traveling—without needing to log into someone else’s device.
- TV, simplified: With setup that only takes minutes, a simple-to-navigate Home Screen, and an uncluttered remote control that does all you need—Roku makes it easier to watch the TV you love.
- The workflow encodes alternatives. An encoder or media pipeline creates the renditions and organizes them for delivery.
- The manifest exposes the choices. A playlist or manifest identifies the available streams and their relevant properties.
- The player chooses a rendition. It may consider observed throughput, playback-buffer state, and device constraints.
- The player can revise its choice. If conditions change, it can switch to another available rendition at an appropriate segment or fragment boundary, depending on the format and implementation.
There is no single ABR algorithm or fixed switching interval used by every player. RFC 9317 notes that implementations vary and often use proprietary rate-adaptation algorithms. A client may make an initial throughput probe and then rely on passive observations and buffer behavior. The available ladder also matters: a player cannot select a rendition the service has not exposed.
Why the player may choose a lower bitrate
The player is not simply trying to select the largest number in the manifest. A rendition that demands more capacity than the network path can sustain may take too long to arrive and increase the risk of a rebuffering stall. A lower rendition can keep playback moving, even if its picture or sound quality is reduced.

- Ultra-speedy streaming: Roku Ultra is 30% faster than any other Roku player, delivering a lightning-fast interface and apps that launch in a snap.
- Cinematic streaming: This TV streaming device brings the movie theater to your living room with spectacular 4K, HDR10+, and Dolby Vision picture alongside immersive Dolby Atmos audio.
- The ultimate Roku remote: The rechargeable Roku Voice Remote Pro offers backlit buttons, hands-free voice controls, and a lost remote finder.
- No more fumbling in the dark: See what you’re pressing with backlit buttons.
- Say goodbye to batteries: Keep your remote powered for months on a single charge.
Network throughput is not the only consideration. Depending on the player, memory, processor capability, and display size can also affect the choice. The goal is generally a practical balance among audiovisual quality, smooth playback, and the application’s other priorities. ABR can respond to conditions, but it cannot make the underlying connection carry more data than it can support.

DASH
Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP (DASH) is another HTTP-based approach. Google’s YouTube Live guide describes DASH as codec-agnostic and gives requirements for encoders delivering live streams to YouTube. Those instructions apply to YouTube’s platform and ingestion workflow; they are not universal requirements for every DASH deployment. YouTube Live encoder settings
CMAF
Common Media Application Format (CMAF) is a format for segmented media that can support adaptive presentations with HLS and MPEG-DASH. Apple refers to alternative tracks that can be switched at fragment boundaries as “switching sets.” Apple CMAF overview

What to compare when evaluating a streaming setup
- Rendition ladder: Which resolutions, codecs, and bitrate options are actually offered?
- Selection behavior: How does the player respond to throughput, buffer state, and device capability? Different implementations can make different decisions.
- Format and compatibility: Does the workflow target HLS, DASH, or both, and can the intended devices play the chosen codecs and packaging?
- Playback priorities: How important are picture or sound quality, startup time, stall avoidance, and latency? A live stream and an on-demand program may have different priorities.
Multiple bitrate streaming is not the same as automatic quality
Multiple bitrate streaming describes the set of encoded alternatives. ABR describes how a player selects among them over time. A service can publish multiple renditions without a particular player switching automatically, and an ABR player can only choose among the renditions it receives in the manifest. Both the delivered options and the client’s selection behavior determine what viewers experience.
