Applications range from asking a model to describe a picture to a live voice-and-vision assistant or a robot that uses camera and microphone input. What the model can perceive is not the same as what an application can safely do: software must connect model outputs to tools or hardware.
What is multimodal AI?
Multimodal AI processes multiple information types, or modalities. For example, a user might provide an image and ask a question in text; the system must relate the written request to visual content to respond. Google Cloud describes multimodal models as handling inputs such as text, images, and audio, and converting prompts across content types. The defining idea is cross-modal interpretation, not simply handling a large amount of data.

Multimodality and generative AI describe different things. Multimodality is about the kinds of information a system can handle; generative AI is about producing new content. A system can be both—for example, interpreting an image and generating a written description—but not every multimodal system has to generate content.
How does multimodal AI combine vision and audio?
A system can receive visual and audio information alongside text, then use the context among those inputs to produce a response. Some applications analyze discrete uploads, such as a still image and a recorded clip. Others accept ongoing streams in an interactive session, where the system responds while audio, images, or text continue to arrive. The session design and latency requirements matter: a live conversation has different needs from an analysis that can wait for an uploaded file to be processed.

What are examples of multimodal AI applications?
- Image question-answering: A user supplies a picture and asks for a description or an answer about what it shows.
- Live voice-and-vision interfaces: An application processes audio and images during an interactive session, rather than waiting for a single uploaded input.
- Translation and interactive assistants: Google’s Live API materials list translation and assistant-style experiences among possible applications.
- Robotics interfaces: A model can interpret camera or microphone inputs, receive a natural-language request, and return an output that application code maps to robot functions.
The examples above describe capabilities or use cases in Google documentation. The reviewed official documentation does not provide an independently comparable performance figure, adoption statistic, or market-size estimate for this broad category, so those should not be inferred from a list of possible applications.

How do robots use AI with cameras and microphones?
Robotics makes the distinction between perception, reasoning, and action especially important. A camera or microphone supplies data; the model interprets it and may request an operation; the surrounding application then decides how to invoke a robot function. The model does not automatically connect to arbitrary sensors or actuators.

Google’s robotics streaming guide demonstrates a persistent session that receives text commands, JPEG camera frames, and raw PCM microphone audio. The model can issue a tool call; application code executes the corresponding robot function and returns the result to the model so the session can continue. That software bridge is a necessary part of the architecture, not an incidental detail.

- Validate and execute: Application code maps an allowed tool call to a robot function, with safeguards appropriate to the hardware and environment.
- Return results: The application can send the operation’s result back into the session for the next response.
What Google’s Robotics ER documentation describes
Google’s Robotics ER overview says the model can take image, video, or audio alongside natural-language prompts; identify objects and reason about scene context and spatial relationships; and return structured outputs such as coordinates or bounding boxes. It also describes breaking a task into subtasks and invoking robot functions or generated code. These are documented features and an architecture description, not a guarantee that a robot will complete a task successfully or safely in every setting.
Example input formats are endpoint-specific
In the documented robotics streaming example, microphone input is raw 16-bit PCM at 16 kHz, little-endian, and camera frames are JPEG at up to one frame per second. Those are requirements of that example endpoint—not universal specifications for multimodal AI, microphones, or robot cameras.

What sensors does multimodal AI use?
There is no single required sensor set. In the documented examples here, cameras provide visual data and microphones provide audio; applications may also pass text commands. A system’s accepted input types depend on the particular model, API, and application integration. Supporting an input modality does not by itself mean a model can control the device that captured it or any connected hardware.

What should developers check before choosing an approach?
Compare systems against the needs of the application rather than assuming that “multimodal” means the same thing everywhere.
- Inputs and outputs: Confirm which modalities the specific model accepts and what it returns.
- Live or discrete processing: Decide whether the application needs streaming interaction or can use uploaded, one-time inputs.
- Latency and session design: Check whether the interface can meet its response needs and how it maintains a session.
- Tools and hardware integration: Identify the code and interfaces needed to map model requests to permitted functions.
- Privacy and deployment controls: Establish how audio, images, and other potentially sensitive data are handled in the chosen deployment.
- Availability status: Check whether capabilities belong to a preview model or a generally available offering before relying on them.
For client-to-server production use, Google’s Live API guide recommends ephemeral tokens. Robotics documentation also places responsibility on developers to maintain a safe environment. For a physical system, integration should constrain which actions are available and account for mistaken or unexpected model output; the model’s ability to interpret a scene is not a substitute for safety controls.
What does the current robotics preview status mean?
Google’s Gemini Robotics ER 2 Streaming entry is marked as a preview model, lists text, image, video, and audio inputs, and reports a July 2026 update. That status and capability list apply to that specific model entry; they should not be projected onto all multimodal models or treated as a settled production standard. Availability can change, so check the model’s current listing before planning around it.
