Multi-Agent Orchestration in 2026: LangGraph vs CrewAI vs AutoGen

LangGraph offers explicit graph orchestration, CrewAI combines structured Flows with autonomous Crews, and AutoGen is in maintenance mode. Compare their trade-offs and decide what to validate for your application.

LangGraph, CrewAI, and AutoGen are not interchangeable ways to run the same agent team. LangGraph emphasizes explicit graph control and stateful execution; CrewAI pairs structured Flows with role-based agent Crews; AutoGen remains relevant for existing systems, but its maintainers say it is in maintenance mode and direct new users to Microsoft Agent Framework. Choose by the control, recovery, and lifecycle needs of your application—not by a feature checklist or an unsupported claim that one framework is universally best.

How do LangGraph, CrewAI, and AutoGen differ?

Framework Core execution model State and oversight 2026 project status and fit
LangGraph Low-level graph orchestration: deterministic code and LLM-driven steps can coexist as explicit nodes and transitions. See the LangGraph overview. Its documentation describes persistence, durable execution, streaming, and human-in-the-loop review. Checkpoints and restart recovery depend on configuring a checkpointer and suitable persistence backend; they are not automatic in every setup. LangChain’s comparison distinguishes an in-memory saver from persistent options. Consider it when explicit routing, inspectable state transitions, and long-running or interruptible workflows matter. LangGraph 1.0 GA shipped October 22, 2025, according to LangChain’s dated comparison.
CrewAI Two cooperating abstractions: Flows structure application control, while Crews are role-based agent teams for autonomous collaboration. A Flow can call a Crew and use its result in subsequent logic. See the versioned CrewAI Introduction, v1.15.23. The introduction describes Flow state across steps and executions, along with event triggers, branching, loops, and conditional logic. Confirm the chosen version’s actual persistence and recovery behavior for your production setup; the high-level description does not establish identical guarantees to another framework. Consider it when role-oriented collaboration belongs inside a more structured, event-driven application. CrewAI recommends starting production applications with a Flow and placing a Crew inside a Flow step when autonomous collaboration is useful.
AutoGen A framework for multi-agent applications that can operate autonomously or with people, according to its project repository. Keep this model in view when maintaining an existing AutoGen system. Assess the state, pause/resume, and recovery behavior of the specific AutoGen version and application you run; the current lifecycle notice alone does not establish implementation-level guarantees. The AutoGen maintainers state: “AutoGen is now in maintenance mode. It will not receive new features or enhancements and is community managed going forward.” The repository directs new users to Microsoft Agent Framework and existing users to migration guidance.

The table describes documented approaches, not comparative test results. The available sources do not establish a neutral performance ranking for latency, cost, or answer quality. LangChain’s comparison is useful for operational detail, but it is written by LangChain and its comparative judgments should be read as vendor-published claims rather than independent validation.

Which framework should you choose for your project?

Choose LangGraph when the workflow must be explicit and recoverable

Evaluate LangGraph if you need to spell out routing and state transitions, combine predictable code with model decisions, or pause a long-running process for review. Its documentation presents it as a low-level orchestration framework and runtime for stateful agents, with persistence and human oversight among its capabilities.

Separate the graph’s design from its recovery guarantees. LangChain’s comparison says checkpoints can save graph state at execution super-steps when a checkpointer is configured. It also warns that the in-memory saver does not survive a process restart, describes SQLite as suitable for experiments or local use, and suggests a production-grade backend such as Postgres or an equivalent managed store for durable operation. These are vendor-published operational recommendations, not a promise that every LangGraph deployment recovers from a restart. Confirm the chosen backend, checkpoint behavior, and failure-recovery path against your own requirements.

An integrated 350W power supply ensures stable and reliable output for demanding computing tasks and fully loaded extended configurations.

Choose CrewAI when autonomous agent teams belong inside a controlled process

Evaluate CrewAI if role-based agents collaborating on a bounded task are a natural fit, but the surrounding application still needs explicit stages, conditions, loops, or event-driven triggers. In its v1.15.23 documentation, CrewAI recommends a Flow-first structure for production: put a Crew inside a Flow step when the task benefits from autonomous collaboration, then let the Flow direct what happens next.

That split is useful architecturally: a Crew is where role-oriented agent work happens; a Flow is where the larger application’s control and state are organized. If people must approve or edit an action, inspect the exact human-feedback or HITL mechanism for the version you plan to use and determine what your application must implement to pause, expose state, and resume. The introduction page alone does not establish detailed parity with LangGraph’s documented state inspection and modification.

Keep AutoGen in scope for maintenance, not as the default greenfield choice

If AutoGen already runs in production, the repository’s maintenance notice is a lifecycle consideration—not a claim that existing installations stop working. Review and pin the version you depend on, and assess Microsoft’s official migration guidance before extending the system. LangChain’s June 23, 2026 comparison says substantial GroupChat or actor-model code may need architectural adaptation during migration; treat that as LangChain’s assessment, not a guarantee about every codebase.

For a new project on Microsoft’s stack, include Microsoft Agent Framework in the shortlist because the AutoGen repository directs new users there. LangChain’s comparison reports that Microsoft Agent Framework reached 1.0 general availability in April 2026 and describes it as combining AutoGen and Semantic Kernel lineage. Those release and product descriptions come from LangChain’s dated comparison; the AutoGen repository is the primary source here for the successor direction. Verify current APIs and migration steps in Microsoft’s own materials before choosing or porting a system.

What should you validate before committing?

  • Control-flow ownership: Decide which choices must be predictable, auditable application logic and which can be delegated to model-directed agents. LangGraph explicitly combines deterministic and LLM-driven graph steps; CrewAI distinguishes Flow control from autonomous Crews.
  • Failure and recovery requirements: List what must survive a process restart, deployment, interrupted task, or partial failure. Then test the actual persistence configuration and recovery path rather than relying on a general product description.
  • Human approval points: Identify consequential tool calls that require a person to review or edit work. Verify how the chosen version pauses, presents state, records a decision, and resumes—and what the application must build around that mechanism.
  • Integration and runtime fit: Check required languages, model providers, tools, databases, tracing, and custom integrations against current first-party documentation. LangChain’s comparison reports a broader LangChain integration ecosystem and Python/JS-TS framing for LangGraph; treat that scope assessment as vendor-published and verify the providers your application actually needs.
  • Operations versus orchestration: Decide separately whether you need managed deployment, observability, governance, or support. LangGraph documentation lists LangSmith as an ecosystem option; CrewAI’s repository describes its optional commercial AMP Suite control plane, including managed deployment and enterprise-oriented capabilities. Neither offering is a prerequisite established for using its open-source framework.
  • Whether multiple agents are warranted: For a simple single-agent task, test whether orchestration adds enough value to justify its extra control flow and operational complexity. The sources compared here do not quantify when another agent improves quality or cost.

Is there an objective winner?

No objective winner is established by the cited material. The sources are project documentation and a comparison published by LangChain; they substantiate product descriptions and lifecycle guidance, not a neutral head-to-head benchmark. There are no independent comparative figures here for quality, speed, or cost.
