The MTW5 is a stronger fit if you want Dolby Atmos with head tracking, its redesigned fin-less shape, more advanced wind and call processing, or batteries you can replace. If your MTW4 fits well and already meets your needs, keeping it is reasonable.
What changed from MTW4 to MTW5?
Sennheiser announced the MOMENTUM True Wireless 5 on August 20, 2026. The True Wireless 4 launched on March 1, 2024. The successor changes the physical design and adds several features, while Sennheiser describes the core sound character as continuing across both generations, with MTW5 tuning refined toward a less forward midrange, more controlled bass and additional upper-treble air. Sennheiser’s MTW5 announcement and MTW4 launch materials describe the generational changes.

- Spatial audio: MTW5 adds Dolby Atmos 3D spatial audio with head tracking. The comparison sources do not document that addition for MTW4.
- Fit: MTW5 removes MTW4’s stability fins and uses a redesigned housing and tips. Sennheiser says comfort and stability improved; fit remains individual.
- Wind and calls: MTW5 adds adaptive anti-wind and expands its microphone and voice-isolation system, including bone-conduction voice accelerometers and AI speech processing. MTW4 launched with six microphones and adaptive ANC.
- Battery service: MTW5 batteries in both the earbuds and case are user-replaceable. Sennheiser names the earbud battery set BA 501 and case battery BA 502; availability is limited to the EU and selected other countries.
- Wireless and EQ: MTW5 moves to Bluetooth 6.0 and an eight-band EQ. MTW4 uses Bluetooth 5.4.
These are feature and manufacturer claims, not proof that every listener will hear or experience an improvement. Independent reviewers describe the fit change as subtle for some wearers. Sennheiser reported that 73% of testers rated the fin-less shape more comfortable than the previous generation, but its announcement does not describe the tester sample or methodology.

Sound and Dolby Atmos
If you want Dolby Atmos spatial audio with head tracking, MTW5 is the one to consider. Whether it matters depends on whether your phone, app and content support the playback chain. Do not assume every track or source will play in Atmos, or that aptX Lossless will work with every device.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Without that use case, sound alone may not justify replacing MTW4. Sennheiser describes the sound character as carried over, with a tuning refinement rather than a wholly different signature. The MTW5’s stated direction—less forward mids, more controlled bass and more upper-treble air—may suit some preferences better than others.
Noise cancellation, wind and calls
MTW5 has the more feature-rich setup for variable outdoor conditions and voice calls: revised adaptive hybrid ANC, adaptive anti-wind and expanded call processing. That makes it the more appealing option if wind noise or call clarity is a frequent problem for you. Treat claims of better performance as manufacturer claims unless they are backed by a specific independent test; the available comparison does not establish a directly measured call-quality advantage.

Does MTW5 have better battery life?
Sennheiser claims up to 12 hours per earbud charge and up to 40 hours with the MTW5 case. Its MTW4 launch claim was up to 7.5 hours of continuous use and up to 30 hours with the case. These are manufacturer figures and should not be treated as directly comparable real-world results.

In RTINGS’ comparison, continuous battery life with ANC enabled measured 6.5 hours for MTW5 and 7.5 hours for MTW4. That test result differs from the manufacturers’ headline figures and gives MTW4 the edge under that specific ANC-on test. Actual runtime can vary with settings and use.

MTW5’s more practical longevity change may be serviceability rather than runtime: its earbuds and charging case have user-replaceable batteries. Sennheiser identifies BA 501 for the earbuds and BA 502 for the case, with availability in the EU and selected countries. Check local availability and exact part compatibility before relying on replacement batteries as a reason to buy.
How do Bluetooth and codec support compare?
MTW5 uses Bluetooth 6.0, while MTW4 uses Bluetooth 5.4. Sennheiser says MTW5 supports SBC and AAC broadly, and aptX Adaptive on compatible devices, with selectable 24-bit/96-kHz or aptX Lossless options within aptX Adaptive. It says LC3 and Auracast will be added through a future firmware upgrade, so their availability depends on current firmware.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
RTINGS identifies an LC3 compatibility trade-off that favors MTW4 in its comparison. Since Sennheiser describes LC3 support for MTW5 as a future firmware addition, check the current firmware status and your source device before making LC3 a deciding factor. A newer Bluetooth version alone does not guarantee a useful difference if your phone or other source does not support the features you want.
