The MSI Creator TRX40 is a workstation-oriented E-ATX motherboard for third-generation AMD Ryzen Threadripper processors, with four PCIe 4.0 x16 slots, three onboard M.2 sockets, up to 256 GB of quad-channel DDR4, and both 10-gigabit and gigabit Ethernet. Those are manufacturer specifications, not proof of faster rendering or editing: no independent performance tests for this exact board were established. Its appeal is therefore best judged by whether its CPU platform, expansion, storage, networking, and physical size match a specific creator build.
What the Creator TRX40 is designed to support
MSI specifies the Creator TRX40 for third-generation AMD Ryzen Threadripper desktop processors and the sTRX4 socket. This is a generation-specific platform: do not assume a different Threadripper generation is compatible because it shares the Threadripper name. Check MSI’s supported-processor list for the exact CPU model.

The board uses AMD’s TRX40 chipset and an E-ATX layout. MSI’s specification page lists Windows 10 64-bit support; that does not by itself establish support for every later operating system, driver, or application release.
Memory: capacity and speed depend on configuration
There are eight DDR4 DIMM slots arranged for quad-channel memory, with a stated maximum capacity of 256 GB. MSI lists a maximum of 4666 MHz for one single-rank DIMM per channel, with lower maximum rates for more populated configurations. That peak should not be treated as a guaranteed speed for every kit or eight-slot build.
#1 Best Overall
- Supports 12th/13th Gen Intel Core, Pentium Gold and Celeron processors for LGA 1700 socket
- Supports DDR4 Memory, Dual Channel DDR4 5333+MHz (OC)
- Enhanced Power Design: 12+1 Duet Rail Power System with P-PAK, 8-pin + 4-pin CPU power connectors, Core Boost, Memory Boost
- Premium Thermal Solution: Extended Heatsink, MOSFET thermal pads rated for 7W/mK, additional choke thermal pads and M.2 Shield Frozr are built for high performance system and non-stop gaming experience
- High Quality PCB: 6-layer PCB made by 2oz thickened copper and server grade level material
Choose a kit by checking MSI’s memory compatibility information and the supported rate for its rank and slot population. Capacity, channel arrangement, and operating speed are separate considerations; a kit that fits physically is not automatically validated at its advertised rate.
Expansion slots and storage
MSI lists four PCIe 4.0 x16-length slots operating in an x16/x8/x16/x8 arrangement. The specification establishes the listed electrical lane widths, but the information available here does not resolve every physical-clearance or lane-sharing condition for a particular set of cards. Consult the board manual for a detailed multi-card build plan.
Rank #2
- Supports 12th/13th Gen Intel Core, Pentium Gold and Celeron processors for LGA 1700 socket
- Supports DDR4 Memory, Dual Channel DDR4 4800+MHz (OC)
- Core Boost : With premium layout and digital power design to support more cores and provide better performance
- Memory Boost: Advanced technology to deliver pure data signals for the best performance, stability and compatibility
- Lightning Fast Experience: PCIe 4.0, Lightning Gen4 x4 M.2 with M.2 Shield Frozr
For storage, the board itself has three M.2 sockets and six SATA 6 Gb/s ports. M.2 support varies by socket, including interface and drive length, so verify the relevant entry in the MSI specifications before buying a drive.
MSI’s product overview also advertises “7 x Lightning Gen4 M.2 with M.2 XPANDER-AERO GEN4.” This refers to a configuration involving the M.2 XPANDER-AERO GEN4 expansion card; it does not mean seven M.2 sockets are built onto the motherboard. MSI’s board specification lists three onboard sockets.

- ULTRA CONNECT - Network hardware includes a full-speed Wi-Fi 7 module with Bluetooth 5.4 & 5Gbps LAN; Rear ports include USB4 Type-C 40Gbps with display output and 7.1 HD Audio with Audio Boost
Networking and rear connectivity
The wired network hardware listed by MSI includes one 10-gigabit Aquantia LAN controller and one gigabit Intel LAN controller. Wireless connectivity is listed as Intel Wi-Fi 6 AX200, with Bluetooth 5.2. MSI also lists a rear USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 Type-C port rated at 20 Gbps.
These are interface capabilities, not a promise of real-world transfer rates. Actual network throughput depends on the connected network equipment and configuration; storage transfers likewise depend on the drive, connection, and workload. The specification sheet alone does not establish application performance.

Power-design claims and evidence for creator workloads
MSI describes the board as having “dedicate 16 phases 70A digital power to CPU.” That is the manufacturer’s wording and a product-design claim, not an independent measurement of power delivery or sustained behavior under a defined workload.
Recommended Free Tools
No independent tests for this exact motherboard were established for rendering time, editing responsiveness, thermals under load, acoustics, or application performance. The specification-based conclusion is limited: the board offers substantial listed expansion, storage, memory, and networking options for a compatible Threadripper build. Whether that translates into better results for a creator depends on the selected CPU, components, software, and workload; the listed features do not demonstrate a performance gain.

Physical fit and purchase checks
The Creator TRX40 measures 12 x 10.9 inches (30.4 x 27.7 cm) and uses the E-ATX form factor. Confirm that the exact case supports this board size rather than relying on a generic claim that it supports ATX.
Quick Recap
- Confirm the exact processor against MSI’s sTRX4 CPU support list.
- Select DDR4 memory using MSI’s compatibility information and the intended slot population.
- Match each M.2 drive to the interface and length supported by its chosen socket.
- Check the case’s E-ATX support against the board’s 12 x 10.9-inch dimensions.
- For a multi-card system, review the manual for installation and slot-sharing details not settled by the headline specification.
