The MSI Claw 8 AI+ A2VM is a premium Windows gaming handheld built around a large 8-inch, 120Hz screen, Intel Core Ultra 7 258V processor, Arc 140V graphics, 32GB of memory, and Hall Effect controls. Its strongest case is performance and display size; its clearest drawback is short battery life during demanding games. It suits players who want Windows flexibility and can play near power, but is a less natural fit for long unplugged sessions or anyone who values extensive handheld-interface customization.
What the MSI Claw 8 AI+ includes
MSI’s U.S. specifications for the Polar Tempest Edition list Windows 11 Home, an Intel Core Ultra 7 258V, Intel Arc Graphics 140V, 32GB LPDDR5x-8533 memory, and an 8-inch 16:10 IPS-level touchscreen with 1920×1200 resolution, 120Hz refresh, and variable refresh rate (VRR). The listed SSD options are 1TB and 2TB NVMe Gen4x4 2230 drives. The device also has an 80Wh battery, two Thunderbolt 4 ports, a microSD 4.0 reader, Hall Effect joysticks and triggers, and a listed weight of 1.75 lb. MSI’s specification page shows configurations that can vary by SKU; check the exact regional listing before assuming every configuration has the same storage, wireless features, or other details.

MSI’s December 3, 2024 announcement described the A2VM with Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 5.4, up to 1TB of PCIe Gen4 storage, and a weight of 795g. It also cautioned that specifications and appearance may vary by model or country and may change. These announcement details and the later U.S. specification table are not universal guarantees for every retail unit. MSI’s announcement is useful launch-era context, while the regional product listing is the better place to verify a specific SKU.

Where the Claw 8 AI+ stands out
Large, fast screen
The 8-inch 1920×1200 display gives games more screen area than a smaller handheld panel, while 120Hz refresh and VRR are designed to make supported motion look smoother and help the display respond to changing frame rates. Windows Central reviewer Rebecca Spear described the IPS screen as attractive, with good color and contrast. The resolution also asks more of the graphics hardware than a lower-resolution display would, so the panel’s headline specifications do not mean every game will run at 120 frames per second.

Strong results in one reviewer’s gaming comparison
In Windows Central’s hands-on review, Spear reported higher gaming frame rates on the Claw 8 AI+ than on the ROG Ally and Legion Go in the tests she ran. That is a useful comparison, not a guarantee across all games, drivers, power profiles, or updates. Performance can vary substantially with the title and settings; the review’s results should not be treated as a universal ranking.
Controls and connectivity
MSI lists Hall Effect joysticks and triggers, and the reviewer praised the joysticks’ responsiveness. Hall Effect controls use magnetic sensing rather than the conventional contact-based sensing used in many controls. The Claw also has two Thunderbolt 4 ports, offering options for charging and connecting accessories, plus a microSD reader for expandable storage. MSI specifies USB-C PD charging and includes a 65W adapter in the U.S. specification table. Its stated charging support ranges from 45W while running or sleeping to 65W depending on the charging state; MSI recommends an MSI PD charger, so do not assume every nominally 65W USB-C adapter will charge identically.

Windows game-launcher flexibility
Windows 11 gives the handheld access to PC applications and multiple game launchers, which can be useful if a player’s library is spread across services. That flexibility comes with a more general-purpose operating system rather than a fully tailored console interface, and the quality of the handheld experience depends partly on MSI’s control software.

Battery life depends on the workload
The 80Wh battery is a substantial capacity, but demanding games can still drain it quickly. In her March 22, 2025 Windows Central review, Spear measured 2 hours 10 minutes playing Cyberpunk 2077 at maximum TDP with the screen set to about 200 nits. She also reported game sessions as short as about 1 hour 47 minutes, depending on the title. These are one reviewer’s results under particular conditions, not guaranteed runtimes; different games, brightness, performance settings, and updates can change battery life. MSI advertises more than 28 hours of 1080p video playback, but that figure is not a gaming estimate. MSI’s footnote describes a low-power test using a 256V processor, FHD 60Hz display, 1TB SSD, 16GB RAM, 150 cd/m² brightness, disabled lighting and Bluetooth, and Super Battery mode. Those conditions differ from the U.S. A2VM specification of a 258V processor and 32GB memory, and from a demanding game workload. MSI’s product overview provides the stated video-test conditions.
For longer gaming sessions, plan around access to power. Spear suggested playing plugged in or using a TV dock when extending a session. The 28+ hour video figure should not be used to estimate how long a game will run.

What may frustrate buyers
MSI Center M offers fewer handheld controls
Spear found that MSI Center M offered fewer customization choices than some competing handheld software. That is a reviewer assessment rather than a measured specification, but it matters if you want to tune the handheld interface, controls, or system behavior extensively. Windows still provides broad PC access; the limitation is the degree of handheld-specific customization described in the review.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The rear feel is not universally comfortable
The reviewer liked the balanced design and responsive controls but found the rear casing texture and vents unpleasant against the hands. This is a personal tactile impression, not a universal ergonomic verdict. If comfort is a priority, grip shape and how the rear surface feels during a long session are worth checking in person where possible.
It launched at a premium price
Windows Central recorded a U.S. launch price of $899.99 for the reviewed 1TB configuration in its March 2025 review. That is a historical reference, not a current quote. The current price and availability were not established here, so assess value using the live price for the exact configuration you are considering.
Who should consider it?
- A good fit: Players who want a large, high-refresh Windows handheld, value its memory and port configuration, and are comfortable playing near an outlet for longer gaming sessions.
- Think carefully: Players who prioritize long untethered gaming, a lower purchase price, or extensive handheld-software customization.
- Compare carefully: Anyone choosing between Windows handhelds should compare the same games at similar power settings and brightness, alongside screen size and refresh rate, memory and storage, weight and grip comfort, ports, software controls, current price, and availability. A frame-rate result from different test conditions is not a dependable head-to-head verdict.
Verdict
The MSI Claw 8 AI+ combines a distinctive large, fast display with strong results in Windows Central’s gaming comparison, Hall Effect controls, 32GB memory, and two Thunderbolt 4 ports. Its clearest compromise is demanding-game battery life, with software customization and rear feel also drawing criticism in the review. It is most compelling for someone who wants Windows flexibility and a big screen and accepts plugging in for longer play; buyers who need extended unplugged gaming should weigh that limitation against their alternatives.
