If mscaptions.exe appears to use an unusually large share of memory, first turn Live Captions off temporarily if Windows is struggling, then check whether the process’s committed memory keeps rising over time. A high Task Manager reading by itself does not prove a memory leak. Microsoft’s guidance does not confirm a generally reproducible mscaptions.exe leak or identify affected Windows builds.
What Live Captions does—and what is known about the memory claim
Live Captions is a Windows 11 accessibility feature that transcribes audio automatically. Microsoft says it is available in Windows 11 version 22H2 and later, and that audio processing and caption generation happen on the device; audio, voice data and generated captions are not shared with Microsoft or sent to the cloud. Its control is at Settings > Accessibility > Captions. Microsoft’s Live Captions overview

The “100% RAM usage” wording describes the reported symptom, not a Microsoft-published statistic or confirmed defect. The available Microsoft documentation does not establish that mscaptions.exe has a general memory leak, nor does it name a Windows build affected by one.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Turn captions off temporarily if memory pressure is disrupting Windows
- Open Settings.
- Go to Accessibility > Captions.
- Switch Live captions off.
See whether the system becomes responsive and whether the process’s memory use changes. This is a practical containment and diagnostic test using the documented control—not a confirmed repair for a Live Captions leak. If the problem persists with captions off, that observation is useful evidence that the symptom may have another cause.

Check whether the process is actually leaking memory
A single Task Manager snapshot cannot show whether memory use is growing without being released. Microsoft recommends starting with Performance Monitor to confirm whether a leak exists. Record the Windows version and build, whether Live Captions is on, what audio is playing, which apps are active, and the process’s memory readings at regular intervals while trying to reproduce the problem. Look for a persistent upward trend under comparable conditions, rather than treating one high reading as conclusive. Microsoft’s guide says: “Most users should start with Step 1 to confirm a leak exists before investigating further.”

Check Commit size, not only Task Manager’s default memory column
Task Manager’s default memory column reflects a process’s working set. Microsoft’s general application and service guidance says this should not be the only measure used to diagnose high memory consumption; verify Commit size as well. A large working-set reading alone does not establish that the process is leaking memory. Microsoft Learn: Troubleshoot high memory usage by a process

Use deeper tools only if the trend supports further investigation
If monitoring shows committed memory rising persistently, Microsoft identifies VMMap and Windows Performance Toolkit as tools for deeper memory analysis. These are general Windows diagnostic tools, not a Live Captions-specific repair. Preserve the conditions and measurements that reproduce the behavior so the investigation is based on a trend rather than an isolated reading. Microsoft Learn: Find and Fix Memory Leaks in Windows

Separate speech-package setup issues from RAM diagnosis
If Live Captions has trouble downloading its speech-language package or setting up, Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance addresses connectivity and Microsoft Store access, and advises using Feedback Hub or contacting an administrator in the scenarios it describes. That guidance concerns setup; it does not say that repairing a language package resolves high memory use. Microsoft Support: Troubleshoot Live Captions issues
Downloaded speech packs can also be removed through Settings > Apps > Installed apps by searching for “Speech Pack.” Microsoft describes this as a way to reclaim disk storage—not as a fix for a running process’s RAM use. Microsoft’s Live Captions overview

Send Microsoft useful evidence if the behavior is repeatable
If committed memory keeps climbing and you can reproduce the behavior, collect the Windows version and build, a time series or screenshots showing the relevant process memory, and the conditions during the test—including caption state, active audio and open apps. Submit feedback through Feedback Hub for a first-party Windows feature issue. Reporting it does not guarantee a fix, but specific, repeatable details make the symptom easier to assess.
