If both phones accept a compatible physical SIM, move the card to the new phone. If the new phone uses eSIM, transfer or activate the line through a supported phone feature or your carrier. The right steps depend on the phone, software, carrier, and account verification requirements.
Before you transfer your line
First identify the SIM type your new phone supports: a physical SIM, an eSIM, or both. Check the phone specifications and confirm that your carrier supports the device and the activation method you plan to use. A physical card will not work in a phone without a compatible SIM tray, and an eSIM-capable phone still needs carrier support for eSIM service.

- Keep both phones nearby, charged, and connected to Wi-Fi when the setup flow or carrier instructions require it.
- Have access to your carrier account and be ready to complete any identity or account verification it requires.
- Do not cancel the existing line or erase the old phone before the new phone is working. For eSIM transfers, follow the phone or carrier flow; the old SIM may be deactivated as part of activation.
Move a physical SIM card
This route works only if the new phone has a compatible SIM slot and the carrier accepts the device and SIM. Hardware varies by model; consult the instructions for your phone. Samsung’s guidance for a Galaxy model, for example, shows inserting a physical SIM into its SIM slot: Samsung Support: inserting a SIM card.
- Turn off the phones if their instructions recommend doing so before handling the SIM.
- Use the eject tool or another method specified in the phone instructions to open the tray. An eject tool is optional and many phones include one.
- Place the SIM in the tray in the orientation shown for that model, then slide the tray fully back in.
- Turn on the new phone and check whether it recognizes the SIM and connects to the carrier. If it does not, check the troubleshooting section and the carrier’s activation instructions.
Activate or transfer an eSIM on iPhone
Depending on the carrier, region, iPhone, and software, available routes can include eSIM Quick Transfer, carrier activation, a QR code, a carrier link or app, or manual entry. Follow the route offered by your carrier and the iPhone setup screen; these options are not available in every combination.

Use eSIM Quick Transfer when it is offered
Apple’s Quick Transfer has device and software prerequisites. Follow the prompts on the new iPhone and keep the previous iPhone available. In the Quick Transfer flow Apple documents, “When the cellular plan on your new iPhone activates, it deactivates your previous SIM.” See Apple Support’s eSIM setup and transfer instructions for supported conditions and steps.
Use the carrier’s activation method if Quick Transfer is unavailable
Your carrier may activate the plan directly, provide a QR code or link, offer activation through its app, or give manual details. Use the carrier’s current instructions for your account and iPhone rather than assuming a method used by another carrier will work. Apple also lists carrier-assisted options on its eSIM support page.

Samsung Galaxy phones
Samsung documents carrier QR-code activation for eSIM on a specific Galaxy model and notes that carrier support varies. Use the instructions for your exact model and carrier; eSIM capability in the phone alone does not guarantee that the carrier supports activation: Samsung Support: SIM and eSIM setup.
Physical SIM or eSIM: which route applies?
| Check | Physical SIM | eSIM |
|---|---|---|
| Phone requirement | A compatible physical SIM tray | A supported eSIM-capable phone and software combination |
| Carrier requirement | The carrier must accept the device and SIM | The carrier must support eSIM activation or transfer for the device and account |
| Typical setup path | Move the card into the new phone’s tray | Use an available phone transfer flow or the carrier’s app, QR code, link, web process, or support |
| When help may be needed | If the phone does not recognize the card or the line is not active | If transfer is unavailable, the profile will not download, or the carrier must issue or activate a profile |
Neither method is universally faster or more reliable. The practical choice is the method supported by both the new phone and the carrier.

Fix common SIM activation problems
The phone does not recognize a physical SIM
- Confirm that the new phone has a SIM tray and that the card is compatible with it.
- Check that the card sits flat in the tray and that the tray is fully inserted, following the model’s instructions.
- Check with the carrier whether the device and line are supported and whether any activation step remains.
The eSIM transfer option is missing or the profile will not download
- Connect to Wi-Fi if the setup or carrier flow needs an internet connection to download the profile.
- Confirm that the device, software, carrier, and account meet the requirements for the transfer method shown.
- Use the carrier’s alternative activation route or contact the carrier if the automatic transfer is not offered. Google gives this direction for Pixel transfers; Apple likewise documents carrier-assisted activation options.
The SIM is installed but the line has no service
Check the carrier’s activation status and instructions before changing network settings or repeatedly restarting the phone. If the carrier shows the line is active but the phone still has no service, follow the device maker’s troubleshooting steps and ask the carrier to verify the line, device compatibility, and activation. Carrier procedures differ by country and provider; examples include T-Mobile’s SIM and eSIM support, AT&T’s SIM support, and Rogers’ eSIM support. These are carrier-specific instructions, not interchangeable steps for every account.
