Agentic engineering means directing AI coding agents through a human-led process: define the outcome and boundaries, provide relevant context, delegate a bounded task, then verify the behavior and changes. The agent may do substantial implementation work, but the engineer remains accountable for whether the result is correct, secure, maintainable, and fit for the requirements.
What is agentic engineering?
It is an approach to software development in which people use AI systems to perform or assist with engineering work while retaining judgment and responsibility for the result. IBM describes engineers as evaluating agent output for correctness, security, performance, maintainability, and alignment with requirements. The term does not mean that software is written autonomously or that agent output is trustworthy by default.

The useful distinction is not simply “AI or no AI.” It is who is directing the work and how much is being delegated. A developer might ask an assistant to explain a function, request a draft implementation, or assign an agent a larger task with permission to inspect files and run checks. These represent different levels of abstraction and autonomy, and call for different amounts of oversight.

How is it different from vibe coding?
“Vibe coding” is often used for a loose, prompt-and-see approach: describe an idea, accept generated code, and keep iterating based on what appears to work. Moving beyond it means making the work legible and reviewable. You state what should happen, share the constraints that matter, keep the delegated task in bounds, and check the result against explicit expectations.
This does not require a heavyweight specification for every change. A small, reversible edit may need only a short task description and a targeted check. A change that affects authentication, data handling, or a broad interface deserves a clearer plan, more context, and tighter review. The goal is not to remove experimentation; it is to make sure experimentation does not substitute for verification.
A practical workflow for using a coding agent
1. Define the outcome and boundaries
Describe the user problem, expected behavior, and scope. Include constraints such as compatibility requirements, performance expectations, security assumptions, or files and systems that must not change. For an ambiguous or high-impact task, ask the agent to propose an approach before it edits code. Addy Osmani’s companion guide to AI-assisted development recommends planning the approach and intended outcome before implementation; a short specification can help when the work warrants it.

A useful task statement answers: What should change? How will a reviewer recognize success? What is explicitly out of scope? For example, “Add server-side validation for the existing profile update endpoint; preserve its response format; do not change authentication or the database schema” gives the agent more direction than “Improve profile updates.”
2. Provide focused, relevant context
Share the files, schemas, requirements, examples, logs, and conventions needed to do the work. Context is part of the engineering task: without it, an agent may produce code that is plausible but inconsistent with the project or irrelevant to the actual requirement. Osmani writes, “The quality of AI output is directly proportional to the quality and relevance of the context you provide.”
That is a practical principle, not a guarantee that more context always improves an answer. Prefer the relevant implementation, its callers, related tests, and the constraints that govern them over a broad dump of unrelated files. Tell the agent when an example is authoritative and when it is merely illustrative.

3. Delegate a bounded unit of work
Ask for a change with a clear expected behavior and a manageable scope. Keep architectural decisions, security assumptions, and out-of-scope areas visible. If the task is too broad to review as one change, divide it into pieces with checkpoints—for example, first ask for an implementation plan, then delegate one component, inspect it, and proceed.
Bounded work makes it easier to identify when the agent has made an unsupported assumption or changed something it should not have. It also preserves a meaningful human decision point before a broad or consequential implementation proceeds.
4. Verify behavior and inspect the change
Run checks that match the task, then inspect the diff rather than relying only on the agent’s summary. Tests can show whether the behaviors they cover still pass; they do not establish correctness outside those cases, or prove that a change is secure or maintainable.

- Check the implementation against the stated requirements and constraints.
- Run relevant tests, linters, type checks, or other project checks, and note what was not covered.
- Review the diff for unintended files, unnecessary complexity, unsafe assumptions, and changes to interfaces or data handling.
- For higher-stakes changes, use a tighter feedback loop and add appropriate security or operational review.
IBM’s evaluation criteria—correctness, security, performance, maintainability, and requirements fit—are useful prompts for human review. Which ones matter most depends on the change.
5. Use what you learn to refine the task
If review reveals a missing requirement, an incorrect assumption, or a relevant project convention, update the task or context before asking for another change. Keep enough understanding of the delivered code to explain its behavior and support it after it is merged. This feedback loop turns review into part of the work rather than a final, disconnected gate.
How much autonomy should you give an agent?
Calibrate autonomy to the task’s complexity and stakes, your familiarity with the code, and the trust the agent has earned on comparable work. A familiar, low-risk, reversible task may be suitable for direct implementation followed by review. For unfamiliar systems or changes that are hard to reverse, ask for a plan, limit the scope, and review intermediate decisions.

Useful questions before delegating include:
- Can I explain how success will be checked?
- Would an incorrect result be easy to detect and reverse?
- Does the agent have enough relevant context to act without inventing requirements?
- Do I understand the affected code well enough to review the result?
- Could the change affect security, user data, availability, or a public interface?
If the risk is high or the expected behavior is unclear, reduce autonomy: narrow the task, request a plan first, or keep the agent in an advisory role until the requirements are clear.
What agentic engineering does—and does not—establish
Agentic engineering is a workflow and accountability model, not evidence that using an agent will make every developer faster or produce better software. The sources supporting this guide offer qualitative recommendations on planning, context, delegation, review, and testing; they do not establish a general causal productivity gain for a particular agentic workflow. The number of pages in a book about the subject is bibliographic information, not a measure of engineering results.
The underlying habits are more durable than any particular tool interface. The O’Reilly listing for Addy Osmani’s Beyond Vibe Coding: From Coder to AI-Era Developer describes a 252-page book published in September 2025. Because tool capabilities and guidance evolve quickly, consult current official documentation for the specific agent or feature you use.
