Move a Figma Make App Into Claude Code: Handoff Routes and Workflow

Download a Figma Make project or push it to GitHub to keep developing in Claude Code. Learn what MCP adds, what does not sync back, and who can use the local-codebase beta.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To continue developing a Figma Make app with Claude Code, move its project code into a codebase Claude Code can work on: download the Make project as a ZIP or push it to GitHub, then open that project in your development environment. Add Figma’s official MCP plugin when you want Claude Code to use context from the design file. The code handoff and the MCP connection do different jobs: the former gives you the project to edit; MCP provides design context.

Choose what you want to take over

Figma Make can create a functional app or prototype. That is different from copying its current preview into Figma Design: the copy becomes editable design layers, not a working Make app or its project code. Choose a code handoff if your goal is to keep developing the implementation. Choose the design-layer copy if you only need to share or refine the visual state in Design. Figma’s Make overview describes this distinction.

Pick a handoff route

Route Useful when What happens to later changes
Download the Make project as a ZIP You want a straightforward copy to open in an IDE and develop independently. Edits made outside Make do not automatically sync back. You can copy changes manually or share them in Make.
Push the Make project to GitHub You want to work from a repository and retain a route for continuing Make pushes. The repository is associated with the Make file, but you still need repository access and ordinary Git practices.
Make in your local codebase beta You have access to the limited beta and want to work with an existing Git repository inside Make. Local Git work is supported, with different levels of support by provider; see the beta section below.
Copy the preview to Figma Design You need editable visual layers for design collaboration rather than the app’s implementation. This produces design layers, not a functional Make app.

Figma documents the ZIP and GitHub handoff options, including the ZIP sync limitation, in Beyond the basics: Using Figma Make.

Open the project and connect Figma context

Get the code into your development environment

  1. In the Make project, use its code download option to obtain a ZIP, or push the project to GitHub.
  2. If you downloaded a ZIP, extract it and open the resulting project folder in your preferred IDE. If you chose GitHub, open or clone the corresponding repository.
  3. Before editing, keep an untouched copy or branch so you can recover the original project state.

Install Figma’s Claude Code plugin when design context will help

Figma recommends its remote MCP server for most Claude Code users. In Claude Code, install the official plugin using:

  • Help keep private content private with the included password protection featuring 256‐bit AES hardware encryption.(3)
  • Easily manage files and automatically free up space with the SanDisk Memory Zone app.(5). Non-Operating Temperature -20°C to 85°C

Restart Claude Code, then authorize access from the plugin interface. Figma says the MCP connection can provide context from Make and other supported Figma resources, including components, variables, and layout information. It is not a code-export engine: Claude Code is the coding agent that reads the project and makes implementation changes, while MCP supplies design context. See Figma’s Claude Code setup guide and MCP server overview.

Figma’s MCP collection lists an MCP-capable code editor or application and a Figma Design, Make, or FigJam file as requirements. Access varies by seat: a Dev Mode full or developer seat provides full MCP access, while other seats have monthly limits. Details are in Figma’s MCP collection overview.

Sandisk 1TB Portable SSD, Up to 800MB/s Read Speeds, Black (Old Model)
  • Solid state performance with up to 800MB/s read speeds in a portable drive. (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device, interface, usage conditions and other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
  • Back up your content and memories on a storage solution that fits seamlessly into your mobile lifestyle.
  • Take it with you on your adventures—up to two-meter drop protection means this durable drive can take a beating. (Based on internal testing.)
  • Secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind thanks to the tough rubber hook.
  • From Sandisk, a brand professional photographers trust to take on assignments.

If your organization blocks plugin installation or authorization, follow its access policy and contact your Claude administrator; the setup does not bypass organization controls. Figma also documents a local desktop-server alternative for specific organization or enterprise workflows, but its general recommendation for most users is the remote server.

Develop in small, verifiable steps

Make projects can differ, so inspect the actual codebase before asking Claude Code to change it. A staged workflow gives you a chance to catch framework assumptions and design mismatches early.

SSK Portable SSD 500GB External Solid State Hard Drive USB C Up to 1050MB/s
  • Capacity Display Variance: 500GB external ssd often appears as around 465GB on Windows. MacOS can show full 500 GB capacity. This is binary calculation difference and doesn’t affect SSD hard drive actual physical storage
  • 1050 MB/s Speed: Instantly access to your files with blazing-fast 10Gbps external SSD read up to 1050MB/s and write up to 1000MB/s. LED Light indicates USB SSD instant activity
  • Data Security: Solid state drives S.M.A.R.T. health diagnostics and adaptive TRIM optimizing data block management ensures consistent write speeds and extends the longevity of the portable SSD
  • USB-C & USB-A Cable: Both cables featuring rapid USB 3.2 Gen2, this USB SSD effortlessly bridges devices, enabling seamless cross-platform file transfers and backup between computers, smartphones, tablets and iPhone
  • Always Fast: No slowdowns for large file transfers. With SLC caching (25% of current available capacity allocated as high-speed cache), this external SSD delivers steady 10Gbps for transfers within the cache capacity
  1. Map the project. Ask Claude Code to inspect the folder structure, package scripts, dependencies, routes, and existing components without changing files. Confirm its summary against the files.
  2. Relate the interface to the code. Ask it to identify the visible Make screens and likely matching routes or components. Provide the relevant Figma file or frame context through MCP when useful, and ask it to state uncertainties rather than assume the project structure.
  3. Agree on a plan. Choose one feature or screen at a time. Ask for the files it expects to change and the intended behavior before it implements a larger change.
  4. Implement and inspect each change. Review the diff, then run the development or build command documented by this project. Do not assume every Make project uses the same framework or commands.
  5. Compare behavior and appearance. Check important screens and interactions against the Make preview, and refine any discrepancies in the code. MCP provides context; it does not guarantee pixel-perfect output or replace verification in the running project.

Figma describes MCP as context and details for an agent, while the agentic development tool generates the final code in its own environment. The exact result therefore depends on the project and the changes you request, not on MCP alone.

When the local-codebase beta is an option

Figma separately documents “Make in your local codebase” as a limited closed beta, not the ordinary generally available ZIP or GitHub handoff. It requires access to the beta and the Figma Beta desktop app for Mac. The workflow connects or clones a Git repository and supports local work such as commits and branches. GitHub is fully supported; GitLab and Bitbucket support is partial. Check the current eligibility and provider details in Figma’s local-codebase beta documentation before planning around it.
