A mouse cursor is the on-screen indicator controlled by a mouse, trackpad, stylus, or another pointing device. “Mouse pointer” is the usual operating-system term; “mouse cursor” is its everyday synonym. The blinking marker in a text field is different: it is a text cursor or caret.
This guide explains cursor shapes, current Windows 11 and macOS controls, website-level customization, accessibility choices, and practical fixes for a pointer that disappears, lags, or clicks inaccurately.
What a mouse cursor does
The pointer shows where the next pointing-device action will occur. Its exact active pixel is the hot spot, normally the arrow tip rather than the graphic’s center. The operating system and applications change the graphic to communicate what is possible under it.
The physical mouse is input hardware; the cursor is the software-rendered result. A trackpad, touchscreen-compatible stylus, joystick, or switch device can control the same pointer.

Pointer, cursor, and caret
| Term | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Mouse pointer | Movable on-screen indicator controlled by a pointing device. |
| Mouse cursor | Common synonym for the mouse pointer. |
| Text cursor (caret) | Blinking insertion position in editable text. |
| Selection cursor | Pointer state indicating that text or an object can be selected. |
| CSS cursor | Pointer appearance chosen by a webpage for an element. |
Windows exposes mouse-pointer and text-cursor accessibility settings separately, so changing one does not change the other (Microsoft accessibility guidance).
Common cursor shapes and their meanings
| Shape or state | Typical meaning |
|---|---|
| Arrow (Normal Select) | Ordinary selection and navigation. |
| I-beam (Text Select) | Text can be selected or edited. |
| Hand (Link Select) | An item, commonly a hyperlink, is clickable. |
| Four-way arrow (Move) | An object or window can be moved. |
| Horizontal, vertical, or diagonal resize arrows | An edge or corner can be resized. |
| Crosshair (Precision Select) | Precise selection, often in graphics software. |
| Wait or busy indicator | The application is processing. |
| Not-allowed symbol | The current action is unavailable. |
| Help pointer, pen, location, or custom artwork | Application-specific meaning. |
Names and artwork vary by operating system, application, theme, and accessibility scheme. A hand icon is only a visual cue; it does not make an element keyboard-operable.
Change the mouse cursor in Windows 11
Set pointer size and color
- Open Start > Settings (or press Windows key + U).
- Select Accessibility > Mouse pointer and touch.
- Move the Size slider and choose white, black, inverted, or a recommended/custom color.
These built-in controls are system-wide and are the safest first choice for visibility (Microsoft).

Choose a scheme or replace individual states
- Go to Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Mouse.
- Select Additional mouse settings, then open Pointers.
- Choose a complete scheme, or select a state under Customize.
- Select Browse, choose a cursor file, then select Open > Apply > OK.
Windows commonly uses .cur for static cursors and .ani for animated ones. A scheme needs all relevant states, not just the normal arrow. Low-resolution artwork can look soft on high-DPI displays, and the hot spot must align with the intended click point (Microsoft cursor documentation).
Adjust speed, acceleration, trails, and visibility
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Mouse and adjust Mouse pointer speed.
- Select Additional mouse settings > Pointer Options.
- Adjust motion, Enhance pointer precision, pointer trails, and Hide pointer while typing.
Enhance pointer precision changes movement behavior (acceleration); it does not increase the mouse sensor’s physical resolution. Trails can help locate a pointer but may distract some users.
Use ClickLock for dragging
- Open Additional mouse settings > Buttons.
- Turn on ClickLock, then select Settings to change the activation delay.
ClickLock can reduce the need to hold a button continuously, but a brief press may start a drag, which can hinder precision work.

Make the Windows text cursor easier to see
- Open Start > Settings > Accessibility > Text cursor.
- Increase Text cursor thickness.
- Enable Text cursor indicator, then choose its size and color.
This changes the blinking caret only; mouse-pointer size and color remain independent.
Change the pointer on macOS
- Open the Apple menu.
- Select System Settings > Accessibility > Display.
- Use the controls under Pointer to change pointer size and color.
Apple also provides a temporary locate-pointer behavior: rapidly move a finger on the trackpad or move the mouse to enlarge the pointer. Apple periodically changes labels and sidebar organization, so these paths apply to modern macOS releases and may differ slightly on older versions (Apple support).

For browser users
A Chrome cursor extension can theme the pointer inside supported webpages, such as Custom Cursor for Chrome. It does not change Windows or macOS desktop applications, games, or every browser surface. Extensions may be restricted by enterprise policy and can behave differently across browsers and pages.

For web developers
CSS controls the pointer over an element:
button { cursor: pointer; }
.text-area { cursor: text; }
.disabled { cursor: not-allowed; }
.custom-cursor { cursor: url("/images/cursor.cur"), auto; }
The cursor property accepts keywords and, where supported, an image URL with a fallback (MDN). Browser and platform limits affect image dimensions, formats, and touch behavior. Do not hide the cursor on ordinary content, rely on color alone, or use pointer as a substitute for a real button, link, or keyboard support. A not-allowed cursor communicates state but does not disable an element.
Fix a cursor that disappeared
- Move across every monitor; unusual arrangements or scaling can make a pointer appear lost.
- Check the mouse battery, cable, receiver, Bluetooth pairing, USB port, hub, dock, and KVM switch. Reconnect it.
- Move the pointer outside the affected app. Full-screen software, games, presentations, remote-desktop sessions, and virtual machines may hide or capture it.
- Check Pointer Options for hiding-while-typing, trails, and the Ctrl-key location feature; temporarily enlarge or recolor the pointer.
- Restart the application and computer, then update or reinstall mouse, touchpad, and graphics drivers.
- Test a different mouse or the same mouse on another computer. If the fault follows the device, inspect its sensor, surface, battery, or hardware.
Cursor-enhancement utilities, screen recorders, remote-control tools, accessibility software, browser extensions, and raw-input games can also alter visibility.

- Test a wired or different mouse and replace or recharge the battery.
- Move a wireless receiver closer and away from USB 3 devices and other radio sources; try another USB port.
- Disable trails and third-party effects, then test outside the affected application.
- Check CPU/GPU load, display refresh settings, graphics drivers, remote-desktop latency, and game-specific input options.
- Reset pointer speed and acceleration; pointer acceleration can feel like inconsistent sensor tracking.
- Test on a second computer. If the problem follows the mouse, replace it; otherwise investigate the host, display, driver, or application.
High polling rates can expose limits in some software or hardware, while a damaged encoder, sensor, or unsuitable surface can cause physical tracking errors.

Choose built-in settings or a custom cursor tool
| Option | Best for | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Built-in Windows settings | Visibility, accessibility, speed, and ordinary customization. | Limited animation and artistic effects; stable and system-wide. |
| Built-in macOS settings | Pointer size, color, and locating the pointer. | Less extensive theming than Windows. |
| Browser extension | Themed pointers inside a browser. | Page- and browser-limited; does not affect desktop apps or games. |
| Third-party desktop utility | Animated themes, effects, trails, sounds, or cursor creation on Windows. | Extra compatibility, privacy, performance, update, and security risk. |
| CSS | Website-specific interaction feedback. | Only affects that page and remains subject to browser and touch restrictions. |

Accessibility and security checklist
- Increase size and contrast before adding animation or sound.
- Test the hot spot, light and dark themes, display scaling, and every monitor you use.
- Make the text caret thicker separately from the pointer.
- Use trails only if they improve tracking; they can distract or disorient.
- Prefer built-in controls and established vendors. Treat cursor packs from random sites as untrusted downloads; avoid executable installers when an image file is sufficient.
- Remember that touch devices may not expose traditional pointer states, and remote sessions may render local and remote pointers differently.
