Then test an external device on another PC and move on to Windows Update or Device Manager. If the built-in touchpad still fails after driver troubleshooting, contact the laptop manufacturer before attempting a disruptive Windows recovery.
1. Check power and physical condition
For a wireless mouse or keyboard, confirm that it is charged or has fresh batteries and that its power switch is on. Inspect wired devices and their cables for visible damage. Check for dirt or debris around keys and the mouse sensor; clean carefully without forcing anything into the device.

2. Reconnect USB devices and try another port
Unplug a wired mouse, keyboard, or wireless receiver, then reconnect it. Try a different USB port. If the device is connected through a hub, plug it directly into the laptop to rule out a hub or power issue. These checks follow Microsoft’s mouse and keyboard troubleshooting guidance.
3. Reset a wireless connection
If the device or its receiver has a reset button, use it according to the device maker’s instructions. For a USB wireless receiver, unplug it, wait about 10 seconds, then reconnect it. If the device connects over Bluetooth, troubleshoot its Bluetooth connection separately rather than treating it as a USB problem.

4. Test an external device on another PC
Connect the mouse or keyboard to another computer, installing any required driver if needed. If it also fails there, the device itself may need replacement. If it works, focus your next checks on the laptop’s USB port, Windows configuration, or laptop hardware. This test helps narrow the fault; it does not identify the exact cause.
5. Check for driver updates through Windows Update
Microsoft identifies Windows Update as the preferred route for driver updates, though it may not offer an update for every device. Use Windows Update first, then return to the input device if the issue remains. Microsoft also documents driver updates through Device Manager in its Device Manager driver guidance.

6. Update or reinstall the touchpad driver
If the built-in touchpad is the problem, open Device Manager and look for it under Human Interface Devices or Mice and other pointing devices. Try updating its driver. If that does not help, uninstall and reinstall the touchpad driver; Windows Update may then download a replacement. The exact device listing and available driver options can vary by laptop model. See Microsoft’s touchpad troubleshooting steps.
7. Roll back a driver if the problem began after an update
If the input problem started after a Windows Update or driver change, check Device Manager for an option to roll back the affected driver. Microsoft’s Device Manager guidance notes that reinstalling a previous driver often resolves issues that arise after Windows Update. The option may not be available for every device, and a rollback is not guaranteed to fix the problem.

8. Contact the laptop maker before Windows recovery
If touchpad driver troubleshooting does not restore the touchpad, ask the laptop manufacturer for model-specific help. Persistent failure of the built-in keyboard and touchpad may need a hardware diagnosis; Microsoft’s general input-device guidance does not establish one cause for both failing together.
Windows recovery tools are a later step for persistent system problems, not the first response to an unresponsive input device. Options include troubleshooting, uninstalling a recent update, reinstalling Windows, or resetting the PC; what is available and what it changes depends on the recovery option and system configuration. Back up important files before recovery. Microsoft describes the choices in its Windows recovery options and Windows Recovery Environment guidance.

On Windows 11, Fix problems using Windows Update may be available as a less disruptive repair: it reinstalls the current version of Windows while preserving apps, files, and settings. Availability can vary. Microsoft explains the feature in Fix issues by reinstalling the current version of Windows.
