The Motorola Razr+ outside display (often called the cover screen) is designed for the “check, tap, and go” moments. Instead of unfolding your phone every time, you can use the cover display for notifications, quick replies, media control, camera framing, and more—depending on the app.
This guide walks through what you can realistically do on the outside, which settings control it, and how to troubleshoot the most common issues when your cover screen feels limited.

Whether you’re on a Razr+ with Android 12/13-era software or a later update, the core ideas hold: make the cover screen show the right info, allow the right permissions, and understand what each app supports.
Motorola Razr+ cover display basics
The Razr+ cover screen is the smaller display you see when the phone is closed. Its main job is to show key info and provide limited, app-specific controls without opening the hinge.

On the 2023 Motorola Razr+ model, the cover display is typically a 3.6-inch pOLED with a square-ish layout (about 1056 × 1066 resolution). It’s bright enough for most indoor use and often has options for higher brightness and always-on behaviors depending on your software version.
Most “outside” features fall into two buckets: system-level (notifications, quick settings, clock/weather, incoming calls) and app-level (what Messages, Camera, or Maps lets you do when folded).
Everyday tasks you can do without opening your Razr+
Here’s what you can generally expect from the cover screen. Availability varies by software update and the app’s design, but these are the most common real-world capabilities.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Notifications and quick status
You can usually view most notification types—messages, missed calls, reminders—directly on the cover screen. Many notifications show a short preview plus action options when the app supports it.
Incoming alerts are often designed to be readable at a glance, with support for do-not-disturb rules and notification channels like social, alerts, and system.
Replying and controlling messages
Some Razr+ cover-screen experiences support quick replies—either via predefined responses or short custom text—when you receive certain message types (commonly SMS and select chat apps).
If quick replies aren’t shown, it’s usually a permissions or notification-channel setting (or the app simply doesn’t offer cover-screen actions).
Recommended Free Tools
Calls, voicemail, and contact access
When folded, you can typically see who’s calling, answer or decline (when enabled), and access call history shortcuts depending on your dialer and region settings.
Voicemail indicators and missed-call alerts generally show on the cover screen, even when you can’t fully manage calls without unfolding.
Music, podcasts, and media controls
Media notifications and playback controls are among the most reliable cover-screen features. You can often pause/play, skip tracks, and adjust volume through the media widget or notification controls.
For best results, confirm that the app (Spotify, YouTube Music, Apple Music, podcast apps) is allowed to post notifications and media controls.

What you can change (flash mode, focus, zoom level) depends on the Camera app’s cover-screen mode, but basic capture is usually the goal.
Navigation and turn-by-turn glance
Navigation apps that support a “folded mode” experience may show turn-by-turn directions on the outside screen. If not, you may still get heads-up alerts (like an upcoming turn) via notifications.
For driving, it’s common to keep the cover screen for quick glance guidance while saving the main display for maps and routing options.

The cover screen commonly supports widgets like a clock, date, weather, and at-a-glance calendar information (for upcoming events) depending on your launcher and theme.
If you don’t see your preferred widget, it may require switching cover-screen styles, enabling notification access for that data source, or updating the relevant app.
Payments and tap-to-pay behavior
For tap-to-pay, the outside display can be part of the flow—mostly by showing confirmation screens or enabling quick wake behavior so you can access your wallet prompt.
Actual payment capability still depends on your wallet setup (for example, Google Wallet/Google Pay), NFC settings, and whether the wallet allows transactions while the phone is folded and unlocked.
Weather, calendar, and other widgets
If you’ve ever wished the cover screen would show “just the stuff you need,” widgets are the answer. You can usually pick which items appear in the cover layout and what update intervals they use.
To avoid draining power, prefer widgets that update frequently but not constantly—especially if you use always-on modes.
How to set up the outside display to match your habits
Most “cover screen can’t do anything” complaints boil down to settings—notification permissions, notification channels, lock behavior, or battery optimization.
Use the steps below as your baseline. The exact menu names can vary slightly by software build, but they’re typically under Settings → Display and Settings → Notifications.
Choose what shows on the cover screen
Start with the cover-screen display style. On many Motorola builds, you can select cover layouts/themes and decide what content appears while closed.

- Open Settings
- Tap Notifications (and later fine-tune channels)
- Go to Display or Display & brightness
- Look for a Cover screen / Front display / Cover display option
- Select the cover layout (widgets, clock style, and shortcuts)
If you don’t see “Cover screen” inside Display, search for it in Settings using the search bar and type cover or front display.
Manage notifications and quick reply permissions
To get replies and actions, you need the right notification permissions and the right channel enabled. This is especially important if you upgraded recently and notifications were reset.
- Open Settings → Notifications
- Tap App notifications
- Select the app (for example, Messages or your chat app)
- Enable Allow notifications
- Open Notification categories (if shown) and enable the relevant category (messages, calls, alerts)
- Check whether any option exists for Show on cover screen / Show on lock screen
If quick replies still don’t appear, check the app’s own in-app settings for reply behavior and ensure the app has the needed permissions (often notification permission, and sometimes “display over other apps” style permissions in edge cases).

Cover screens get overlooked during setup, then users assume the display is “dim” or “hard to read.” Fix it by calibrating brightness and enabling comfortable text sizes.
- Go to Settings → Display
- Adjust Brightness (and disable auto-brightness only if you’re testing)
- Set Font size and Display size to your preference
- Look for Dark mode or contrast settings
If your cover screen feels “laggy,” it can also be a battery mode issue—see troubleshooting if touch latency shows up after enabling battery saver.
Use always-on / ambient display options
Always-on behaviors are useful when folded, but they can impact battery life. Configure it intentionally, especially if you keep the phone closed for long periods.
- Open Settings → Display
- Find Ambient display, Always-on display, or Wake on
- Choose when it turns on (tap-to-wake vs timed)
- Set a schedule if available (for example, daytime only)
For many users, a “tap-to-wake while folded” approach balances readability and battery.
App-by-app: what tends to work best on the outside
Not every app is designed for the cover screen. The Razr+ excels when apps provide a dedicated folded-mode interface, or at least notification actions.
Below are practical expectations for common apps.
Messages, Gmail, and email
SMS/message notifications are usually the most reliable. Quick reply availability depends on the app and Android notification integration.
For email, you may get message previews and actions (mark as read, reply) only if your mail app supports notification actions on Android.
Google Maps, Waze, and navigation apps
Expect turn-by-turn cues when navigation is active. If the cover screen doesn’t show directions, you’ll typically still get notification alerts.

YouTube, podcasts, and audio apps
Audio apps often show playback controls on the cover screen via the media notification. This is usually more dependable than video apps.
Video-heavy apps typically won’t support meaningful cover-screen interaction because the UI needs more space.
Camera and social capture apps
The built-in Camera app commonly supports a folded preview for selfies and quick shots. Social apps may rely on Android intents and therefore vary.
If a third-party app won’t open properly while folded, use the built-in Camera first and edit after unfolding—or check the app’s “external display” or “cover display” compatibility if it has one.
Smart home and control apps
Smart home apps can show notifications (doorbell, alerts, sensor triggers) on the cover screen, and in some cases allow toggles if the app implements Android notification actions.
If you only see alerts but can’t control devices, that’s usually an app limitation rather than a Razr+ limitation.

If the cover screen seems “broken,” don’t start by changing everything. Start with the most likely causes: battery optimization, notification permission, screen wake settings, and app-specific notification channels.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outside display is dark or won’t wake
Common causes include always-on being disabled, proximity/ambient sensor settings, or battery saver reducing background refresh.
- Check Settings → Display for always-on / ambient settings
- Disable Battery saver temporarily and test wake behavior
- Verify that tap to wake (or similar cover-screen wake gesture) is enabled
- Restart the phone
- Update system software in Settings → System → System update
If the screen won’t respond at all to gestures, try cleaning the cover display surface (oil and grime can interfere with touch and sensor performance).
Touch isn’t registering
Touch failures usually look like half-responses, dead zones, or delayed taps.
- Remove any screen protector that’s not compatible with the cover display
- Test in a single app first (for example, the cover clock UI if available)
- Check whether you enabled Reduce touch sensitivity or accessibility options
- Restart and test again
- Boot into safe mode (if available) to rule out a third-party app overlay issue
If touch is consistently unresponsive, you may be looking at a hardware issue—at that point, warranty service is the fastest route.

Quick replies aren’t available
Quick replies depend on both Android and the app. If you see notifications but no reply buttons or text input, it’s often the channel or the app’s integration.
- Open Settings → Notifications → select the app
- Confirm the correct category is enabled
- Ensure notification content isn’t hidden on the lock screen
- Open the app settings and look for notification reply/quick actions options
- Update the app from Google Play
If the app doesn’t support cover-screen replies, your workaround is to tap the notification and reply after unfolding.

App features are missing on the outside display
Some apps simply don’t implement folded-mode UI. Others work only in certain states—like when the phone is unlocked.
- Confirm whether the cover screen works while the phone is unlocked vs locked
- Test with the same app while the phone is unfolded, then fold it during an active task
- Disable battery optimization for the app (Settings → Apps → App info → Battery → Unrestricted)
- Update Android and the app
If a feature still never appears, treat it as an app limitation. The Razr+ cover screen can only display what the app is designed to send to Android’s notification and display framework.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Over-restricting notifications: If you hide lock-screen content for privacy, you may also hide reply actions.
- Ignoring notification channels: Many apps have separate channels for messages, alerts, and promotional content.
- Using Battery saver too aggressively: Media controls and wake behaviors can degrade when background access is limited.
- Expecting full app parity: The outside display is meant for glance-and-act. Some full-screen interactions require unfolding.
- Assuming every widget updates: Weather and calendar updates depend on background permission and sync settings.
Alternatives if you need more screen power
If you routinely need to do more than the cover screen supports—composing long messages, editing photos, or running complex navigation—use the Razr+ hinge as the “workflow switch.”
One practical approach: set cover screen notifications to the actions you want (reply shortcuts, call accept/decline, media controls), then unfold only when you need full input. It reduces friction without giving up capability.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

Can I reply to every message type on the outside display?
No. Quick reply behavior depends on the app’s Android notification integration. SMS and some supported messaging apps are more likely to offer it.
Why do I only see notifications but not controls (like media buttons)?
Media buttons require the app to post a media-style notification and for Android to show it on the lock screen/cover display. Check app notification permissions and lock-screen visibility.
Does the cover screen work while the phone is locked?
Often yes for notifications and limited actions. The exact behavior changes based on your lock screen privacy settings and whether the action requires authentication.
Will camera work when the Razr+ is folded?
Typically, the built-in Camera app supports cover-screen framing and quick capture while folded. Third-party camera/social apps may vary and may require unlocking or unfolding.
Can I customize the cover screen layout?
Usually. You can choose cover display styles and widgets from the cover-screen settings area and then fine-tune what notifications appear.
Bottom Line
The Motorola Razr+ outside display is best for fast, low-effort actions: reading notifications, handling incoming calls, controlling audio playback, using quick camera framing, and getting glanceable navigation and widgets—when apps support those features.
If something is missing, the fastest fix is almost always settings: notification channels, lock-screen visibility, battery optimization, and app updates. Once those are aligned, the cover screen becomes a real “closed-first” experience instead of a passive clock.
