Neither is universally worse. Motion blur does more damage when a moving subject needs to look sharp. Lens flare does more damage when reflections or haze bury important detail or flatten contrast. Both can also be deliberate choices, so judge each against what the photo is for. Nikon describes blur as a way to represent movement, and Adobe notes that flare can be a deliberate stylistic choice.
How to judge which is worse in a given photo
The sources are educational guides from camera and software publishers. They do not rank the two effects or offer a standard severity measure, so the useful comparison is on three axes:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
| Axis | Motion blur | Lens flare |
|---|---|---|
| Subject detail | Hurts when you wanted a crisp action shot. The subject’s edges and features smear. | Hurts when ghosting or haze covers part of the subject. |
| Contrast | Usually not the main issue. | Veiling haze can wash out contrast across the frame. |
| Intent | Panning or a slow exposure can convey speed and movement. | Can add a warm, dramatic or cinematic look. |
A practical rule: if the thing you cannot recover is the subject’s shape or detail, blur is the bigger problem. If the thing you cannot recover is tonal clarity across the scene, flare is.
What causes each one
Motion blur
Motion blur records movement during the exposure. The subject may move, the camera may move, or both. Camera shake and subject motion are different problems with different fixes (Nikon).

ND4 filter provide 2-stop light reduction, recommended for cloudy day use.
- 【NOTE】This K&F Concept filters kit are compatible with all 55mm lenses. Please verify your camera's lens thread size before ordering. This number is always preceded by a "Ø" (diameter) symbol. For example: Ø55=55mm lens thread size.
Lens flare
Flare comes from bright light reflecting or scattering inside the lens system (Adobe). It shows up in several forms:
- Ghosting: spots or rings in the image.
- Veiling: a haze that can wash out contrast. A light source just outside the frame can still cause it if its rays reach the front element.
- Starburst: a point-like star around a light, produced with a small aperture such as f/11 or f/16. Results vary with equipment and scene.
Fixing motion blur
When the subject is moving
Use a faster shutter speed matched to how fast the subject moves. Nikon’s examples are context-specific, not rules: 1/250 second may stop a child on a bicycle, 1/500 second is a starting point for fairly fast action, and stopping helicopter blades may need faster than 1/1000 second. None of these guarantees sharpness.

- Lens Protection & Prevent UV Ray: MCUV filter has two functions, one is to prevent UV ray and weakens the blue tone in images caused by UV, ensuring clarity and color. Another is to protect the lens away from dust and scratches.
- Import AGC Glass: Made by importing AGC optical glass with a CNC-Non-Slip design frame for easily remove and installation, 94% transmittance ensures HD image quality, and no negative effect restores true color.
- 18 Multi-Layer Nanometer Coatings: Double side multi-layer coating, protects the lens and also reduces reflection coming from the filter self.
- Wide Angle Lens No Vignetting: UV filter only 3.3mm thickness with double side polishing technology ensures no vignetting the images are still clear enough even on the telephoto lens.
- Note: This UV filter only fits a 67mm camera lens, please verify your lens size before ordering it. The number beside the Ø (diameter) symbol represents your lens size, please choose the same size filter. Focal Length (mm) ≠ Filter Size (Ø mm)
When the camera is moving
Hold the camera steadily and raise the shutter speed where exposure allows. For long exposures, use a tripod or a safe stationary surface. Adobe’s tutorial says support is especially useful at 1/30 second or slower; that is that tutorial’s guidance, not a guarantee for every focal length or camera (Adobe). Stabilization and tripods help with camera shake but do not freeze a moving subject (Adobe).
This also answers the common complaint that photos “look clear when I focus and shoot, but then they turn out blurry.” Often the shutter was too slow for either the subject or a handheld camera.

- 【Import Optical Glass】Crafted from premium AGC optical glass with 8 multi-layer coatings, this ND filter reduces reflections and glare, ensuring superior image quality.
- 【Versatile Light Control】With 1 to 9 stops of adjustable light reduction and 360-degree rotation for precise dimming settings, this filter is perfect for diverse scenarios. (Note: Max stops may cause a cross-pattern effect, commonly known as an "X black cross." This phenomenon is natural and temporary, occurring due to the adjustable ND filter's interaction with specific lenses and focal lengths.
- 【Glare-Free Surface】Treated with an oxidized sandblasting process, this filter prevents unwanted stray light and minimizes unnecessary reflections on the metal surface.
- 【Slim and Secure】At a mere 7.4mm thickness, the CNC-patterned design ensures enhanced friction while rotating, making it easy to attach/detach lenses and accessories anytime, anywhere.
- 【Compatibility Note】This ND filter suits all 55mm lenses. Check your camera's lens thread size (usually beside a "ø" diameter symbol) before ordering. Additionally, a 58mm lens cap is required for this 55mm variable ND filter.
When you want blur
Adobe quotes videographer Joshua Martin on slow shutter speeds: “You’re not freezing time. You’re letting time pass in front of the camera. You feel the movement in the image.”
Fixing unwanted flare
- Shade the lens with its compatible hood. Check that the hood is made for your lens; no universal fit exists.
- Change your position or the angle of the light.
- Keep the front element clean.
- Remember that a bright source just outside the frame can still cause veiling.
Using flare on purpose
Shoot toward a bright source and experiment with framing and aperture. Adobe quotes photographer Martha Galvan: “The best thing you can do is shoot at a lot of different angles, so that even if some are blown out, you can see what works and what doesn’t work.”

- Protective 67mm UV filter: Guards your camera lens from scratches, dust, moisture, and impacts while maintaining full image clarity during everyday shooting. Especially useful for high altitude and outdoor photography where the sun's UV rays are especially prominent.
- Made from Premium Optical Glass: High-quality optical glass ensures excellent clarity, durability, and consistent performance for professional and enthusiast photographers alike
- Slim Aluminum Filter Ring: Low-profile frame prevents vignetting, even when used on wide-angle lenses all the while remaining lightweight and secure to your lens.
- Clear Color-neutral Performance: Ideal for continuous use as a protective filter without affecting exposure, contrast, or color balance. You can add another filter on top without worrying about any loss in image quality.
- Confident Compatibility : Before adding to cart, confirm your lens thread size by checking the front rim of your camera lens for the “Ø” symbol followed by a millimeter measurement, such as Ø58mm. Make sure you are checking the filter mm size, not the lens focal length, as not all modern lenses display the filter symbol Ø size on the lens. Select the filter with the same mm size as the lens filter mm size to ensure the proper fit to your lens.
The Bottom Line
Decide by purpose. Blur is the worse flaw in a shot meant to freeze action, and flare is the worse flaw in a shot that needs clean contrast and detail. Where either one is intended, it is not a flaw.
