Shell Points and Glimpses are different resources in Mortal Shell II: Shell Points are allocated to abilities, while Glimpses deepen a specific Shell’s Bond and unlock further progression. You can refund ability points without resetting Bond progress. To reset a Shell’s Bond and recover its spent Glimpses, use Mether’s Severance: the Week 1 Update added it as a reset item, and a September hotfix enabled its use at Genessa’s trainer as well as through Zhirelle.
What Shell Points, Glimpses, and Bond Tiers do
| Term | Role | Refund or reset |
|---|---|---|
| Shell Points | Allocate or upgrade a Shell’s abilities. | Allocated points can be refunded, according to the NerdsChalk guide. |
| Glimpses | Deepen an individual Shell’s Bond and open additional progression. | Mether’s Severance resets that Shell’s Bond and returns the Glimpses spent on it, according to the official update notes. |
| Bond Tiers | Shell-specific progression gates for further ability access. | They are reset as part of the Shell reset described in the official update notes. |
| Mether’s Severance | Resets a Shell’s Bond. | The Week 1 Update says to give it to Zhirelle; a September hotfix also enabled its use at Genessa’s trainer. The notes do not establish its cost or use limit. |
What an ability refund changes
Refunding allocated Shell Points changes which abilities you have selected or upgraded. It does not, by itself, erase or lower the Shell’s Bond. Treat this as an ability-allocation adjustment, not a full Shell reset.

How to reset a Shell’s Bond and recover Glimpses
- Obtain Mether’s Severance in-game. The official update notes cited here do not establish its price, all locations where it can be found, or whether it has a use limit.
- Use the item with Zhirelle, the Shell keeper, or at Genessa’s trainer. The latter option was added in the September hotfix listed on the official updates page.
- Select the Shell whose Bond you want to sever. The Week 1 Update says the Shell is reset and all Glimpses spent on it are returned.
This is broader than refunding ability points: it resets that Shell’s Bond progression and returns its spent Glimpses. The official notes do not establish the item’s cost or use limits, so check the current in-game interaction before committing to a reset.

Why older advice about Glimpses may be out of date
The NerdsChalk guide describes Bond Glimpses as permanent, reflecting an earlier state. The official Week 1 Update, dated August 29 in Steam’s news listing, later introduced Mether’s Severance and says it returns the Glimpses spent on a Shell. A September 14 hotfix broadened where the item can be used by enabling it at Genessa’s trainer. Read older guidance in light of those updates.

Keep map-reveal refunds separate
A separate Balance Patch changed Shell map-location reveals to cost Gloom and refunded Glimpses previously spent on map reveals. That is not the same as refunding Shell Points allocated to abilities or using Mether’s Severance to reset a Shell’s Bond.
