Quick answer: Vlas first appears beside his wrecked caravan on the Road to Absolution, south of the Outskirts of Mammon Beacon. To free him, advance his dialogue with Beacon rests, find the Unremarkable Key at the Lonesome Spire camp approach, and use it on his cage. Before the rescue, buy anything you want from the Brigand there. Vlas’s route ends at Marrow Keep, near Merrick’s shop, where speaking with him earns the later Coin of Mammon.

Where to find Vlas and start his quest
Look for Vlas beside a wrecked caravan on the Road to Absolution, south of the Outskirts of Mammon Beacon. Talk to him until his dialogue is exhausted, then inspect Mutton’s empty cage beside the baggage cart. This starts the missing-cat portion of the route and may also trigger the first Coin of Mammon interaction; accounts differ on whether the coin appears immediately or after another dialogue or Beacon reset. If it does not appear, continue the quest and check again after resting and returning.

How to advance Vlas’s quest
- Talk to Vlas at the caravan. Exhaust his available dialogue and inspect the empty cage by the baggage cart.
- Rest at a Beacon, then return. Speak with Vlas again and repeat the rest-and-return cycle as needed until he leaves the camp.
- Go to the upper bandit camp at Lonesome Spire. Reach it from the Gate of Mammon Beacon and search the shack or hut around the camp approach for the Unremarkable Key. Descriptions of the precise landmark differ; inspect the hut and any breakable wall in that area.
- Buy from the Brigand before freeing Vlas. The camp advances after the rescue, and the Brigand’s shop state closes.
- Use the key on Vlas’s cage. Interact with the cage to free him.
- Check Vlas’s original camp for his letter. If it is not there, return after the rescue and inspect the ground again; reports vary on when it appears.
- Finish at Marrow Keep. Find Vlas and Mutton near Merrick’s shop and speak with Vlas to complete the reunion and receive the later Coin of Mammon.
Where the Unremarkable Key is
The key is found in a shack or hut around the approach to the upper bandit camp at Lonesome Spire, and it unlocks Vlas’s cage. Walk through the camp approach carefully and check the hut, including any breakable wall. Guides differ on the exact landmark: one places it near the entrance, while another describes a shack with a breakable wall in the upper camp. The shared location is the Lonesome Spire camp approach, rather than a reliably established compass direction.

Coin of Mammon: when to look for the rewards
Vlas’s route is associated with two Coin of Mammon rewards: an early one around the wreck-and-cage interaction and a later one after the Marrow Keep reunion. The early coin’s exact trigger is described inconsistently, so do not assume that examining the cage alone always grants it. Exhaust Vlas’s dialogue, inspect the cage, rest at a Beacon, and return to check the updated state. The later coin is tied to speaking with Vlas at Marrow Keep.
