The Lathe unlocks the sidearm-upgrade branch; it is separate from the Muradean Actuator, which unlocks melee weapon upgrades.
How to get the Obsidian Lathe
- Start at Widow’s Overlook and travel southeast to Martyr’s Tomb.
- Go through the dungeon to its back room and loot the chest there for the Obsidian Lathe.
- Return the Lathe to Franz at the Tarforge in Marrow Keep. This is reported to add sidearm upgrades to the Tarforge menu.

What the Lathe unlocks—and what it does not
The Lathe opens sidearm upgrades. Other Tarforge components have different reported jobs, so finding one does not substitute for the Lathe:
- Obsidian Lathe: sidearm upgrades.
- Muradean Actuator: melee weapon upgrades.
- Etching Needles: Tarstone upgrades.
- Foundry Stone: smelting materials; a guide also associates it with refunding upgrade materials.
- Endless Core: increasing the level ceiling.
These functions are listed in community references, including a guide to the five Tarforge parts. If the Tarforge shows melee upgrades but no sidearm branch, a sensible first check is whether you have recovered the Obsidian Lathe and delivered it to Franz; that troubleshooting step follows from the parts’ separate reported roles.

Upgrade a sidearm at the Tarforge
Once the Lathe has been delivered, speak with Franz at the Tarforge in Marrow Keep and inspect the sidearm options. Choose the sidearm you want to improve, then check the in-game menu for the available upgrade and its displayed cost before confirming. A sidearm guide reports that both weapons and sidearms can be upgraded there: Mortal Shell 2 sidearms.
There is no sufficiently verified current cost ladder to quote here. A Tarforge calculator explicitly labels its displayed Axatana costs unverified, so use the amount and materials shown by your own game rather than relying on an online price list: Tarforge calculator.

Which sidearm upgrade is best?
No source-backed, current comparison establishes one universally strongest sidearm or upgrade level. Sidearms serve different roles, and a ranking can depend on the version of the game, the player’s build, and the situation. A weapons overview notes the variety of weapons and sidearms, but it does not establish a reliable universal winner: Mortal Shell 2 weapons overview.
