To unlock weapon upgrades early in Mortal Shell II, open the chest just after entering the Village Outskirts Beacon in the Disciple’s Path. It contains the Muradean Actuator, which unlocks upgrades at the Tarforge; it is not a material you spend on an upgrade. For actual costs, use the Tarforge menu in your current game, because the available material guide does not establish reliable costs or exact pickup coordinates, and the game’s economy has changed with updates.
Where to find the first weapon-upgrade unlock
- Travel to the Village Outskirts Beacon in the Disciple’s Path.
- Open the chest immediately after entering the Beacon to collect the Muradean Actuator.
- Use the actuator to unlock weapon upgrades at the Tarforge. Check the Tarforge menu to see the materials and currency required for a specific upgrade.

Unlock items are not upgrade materials
The Muradean Actuator opens a Tarforge function; it is not a spendable upgrade ingredient. PowerPyx lists five Tarforge unlocks, each associated with a different function or location:

These are routes to unlock items, not a complete guide to finding the ingredients required for upgrades. PowerPyx says the five unlocks are not missable and can be collected in free roam after the final boss, before starting New Game+.

What is known about early upgrade materials
Ventrium is described as an early smithing material. Laterite, Dorsalite, Thoracium, and Ossinite are also named in the available Mortal Shell II upgrade materials and farming guide, last updated August 21, 2026. That guide does not confirm exact upgrade costs or authoritative boundaries between material tiers, so treat the names as orientation rather than a definitive progression chart.
The guide describes materials as appearing in chests, enemy drops, dungeon rooms, and near Beacons after cleansing. It does not establish exact positions, drop rates, or dependable respawn rules. Those broad categories are not a guarantee that a particular item will appear at a particular spot or can be farmed repeatedly.

Why older material and farming advice may differ
The official Mortal Shell II patch notes document Week 1 changes to progression and resources, including renewable Glimpses and Tarcores, Tarstone behavior and returns from tempered stones, and expanded merchant restocking as progression advances. The update also changed other aspects of weapons, enemies, and exploration. As a result, older advice about scarcity, rewards, or farming may reflect different tuning.

Choosing an early upgrade without guessing
There is no confirmed universal best early upgrade in the available location and materials information. Decide based on the weapon you currently use, the costs shown in your Tarforge menu, and the patch version you are playing. If you are unsure whether an ingredient is an unlock or a spendable material, check its role in the menu before planning a route around it.
