Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFor the biggest single hit, Great Sword is the clearest answer. But that is not the same as having the highest sustained damage or the fastest clear time: those depend on the monster, your build, the game version, and how reliably you land attacks.
What does “most damage” mean?
There are three different ways to compare weapon damage, and they can lead to different answers:

- Burst damage: the damage dealt by one individual attack. Great Sword is the clearest pick for the biggest hit.
- Sustained damage or DPS: the damage dealt over time. The available evidence does not establish one universal winner.
- Clear time: how quickly a hunter completes a particular quest. That reflects the weapon alongside the target, build, player execution, and other conditions.
So if you mean the biggest number from one landed attack, choose Great Sword. If you mean the best weapon for every hunt or the highest damage over an entire fight, there is no single answer supported across all matchups and play styles.

Great Sword’s slower, committed swings can deliver very large damage when they connect. Pocket Tactics describes it as having the highest single-hit attack damage in its weapon ranking. That is an editorial comparison, not a controlled test proving it wins every damage metric. Pocket Tactics’ Monster Hunter Rise weapon tier list also considers factors beyond damage, including flexibility and ease of use.
#1 Best Overall
- The debut of the new “wirebug” mechanic allows for wire-based grappling actions that can be used to scale cliffs and other hard-to-reach areas, providing new traversal and aerial attack options.
- The game will introduce magnamalo, a menacing new flagship monster, as well as other new monsters like the shape-shifting aknosom, the amphibious tetranadon, and more.
- New hunting partners called palamutes can be personalized and used to ride across the terrain, providing players with all-new traveling and attack options.
- In addition to the plethora of solo and multiplayer quests, the immersive story mode will task aspiring hunters with discovering the secrets behind the puzzling “rampage” events that threaten kamura village.
- Play solo, or join up to three other hunters in local or online co-op play. The Nintendo Switch system also allows for hunting anywhere, anytime and with anyone!
The trade-off follows from the weapon’s deliberate attacks: the large hit only matters if it lands. The official Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak manual describes Great Sword as a weapon whose slower swings can produce very large damage on a hit. That makes it a strong choice for hunters who can find openings and commit to an attack, not an automatic answer for every situation.
Why there is no universal winner for sustained damage
Damage depends on more than a weapon’s headline strength. Capcom’s manual says a monster part’s weakness to the attack type you use affects damage, and explains that sharpness affects melee damage. Your target, the part you strike, your build, and how consistently you connect all change the outcome.

Clear-time leaderboards do not settle the question either. Speedrun.com’s Monster Hunter Rise leaderboard records run times alongside details such as weapon, platform, and game version. Those runs show what players achieved under their recorded conditions; they are not a controlled comparison of every weapon using the same build against the same target and quest.

Other weapons worth considering
For practical choices beyond the biggest single hit, GameWith’s guide offers conditional assessments rather than a universal damage champion. It praises Light Bowgun for rapid-fire pierce damage and safety, Bow for high damage when weak points are hit, Heavy Bowgun for powerful elemental pierce ammunition, and Switch Axe for damage and matchup flexibility. These are guide judgments, not results from a controlled weapon trial. GameWith’s Sunbreak weapon ranking and evaluation cautions that practice can narrow differences and that time-attack performance can be difficult for other players to reproduce.
Rank #3
- Colossal roster - Take on the series' largest roster of monsters to date including all-new monsters, Deviant variants, and the mysterious new Elder Dragon Valstrax.
- Co-op multiplayer - join up and hunt online with up to three other hunters, or meet-up and play together via local play.
- Play anywhere! - with Nintendo Switch, for the first time gamers have the flexibility to either play online with friends on a TV in tabletop mode or play on-the-go in handheld mode.
- New level of challenge - “g” rank is introduced to test experienced hunters' battle tactics. Formidable versions of familiar foes enter the fields with different moves and abilities never before.
- Highly customizable gameplay - Expanding on the four Styles and supermoves called Hunter Arts introduced in Generations, two Styles are introduced for even further refined personalization options
- Consider Great Sword if your priority is a high-damage individual strike and you are comfortable committing to slower attacks.
- Consider Light Bowgun if GameWith’s characterization of rapid-fire pierce damage and safety fits the style of play you want.
- Consider Bow if you can repeatedly land attacks on weak points.
- Consider Heavy Bowgun or Switch Axe when their ammunition strengths or matchup flexibility suit your target and build.
Pick for the hunt—and for your hands
Weapon rankings depend on what they measure. A fair comparison needs to specify the game version, target monster and quest, build, platform when relevant, and whether it measures a top speedrun or typical play. Without those conditions, a ranking cannot reliably tell you which weapon will deal the most damage in your own hunt.
Use the matchup and moveset you can execute consistently. A theoretically stronger option is of little help if you miss its openings; a weapon you know well may let you deal more damage in practice. Great Sword remains the clearest answer to “What weapon hits hardest?”—but for sustained damage or faster clears, the answer depends on the conditions.
