For most startups building a new product in 2026, a modular monolith is the better starting point. It keeps deployment, data handling, and operations relatively simple while the product and its boundaries are still changing. Choose microservices when stable business capabilities need independent ownership, release, or scaling—and the team can operate a distributed system. If that need appears later, split selected capabilities incrementally rather than assuming a rewrite is necessary.
What is the difference between a monolith and microservices?
A monolith is an application built and deployed as one unit. That describes its deployment shape, not the quality of its internal design: a monolith can have clear modules, explicit interfaces, and ownership boundaries. A modular monolith keeps those boundaries inside a single application, so modules can often interact through local calls and participate in shared transactions.

With microservices, service boundaries are also runtime and deployment boundaries. Each service can be developed, released, and scaled independently, but communication between services crosses a network. AWS notes that a modular monolith can be a sensible first step even for a product expected to grow. AWS Well-Architected Framework: REL03-BP01
Should a startup start with a monolith or microservices?
Start with a modular monolith when the product is new, the domain is still being discovered, or a small team can coordinate changes and releases together. It avoids introducing distributed coordination before there is a concrete reason to accept its costs. Use modules and tests to protect internal boundaries, so a future split remains possible.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Microservices become more compelling when business capabilities are well understood, separate teams can own services end to end, and components have genuinely different release or scaling needs. AWS’s service-per-team pattern centers on independent team ownership and delivery; it also recognizes the coordination required when work crosses teams. | Decision area | Modular monolith tends to fit when | Microservices tend to fit when |
|---|---|---|
| Domain maturity | Product boundaries and workflows are still changing | Business capabilities or bounded contexts are understood |
| Team ownership | A small team can coordinate in one codebase | Teams can own services and maintain stable interfaces |
| Release needs | Most changes can ship together without blocking work | Components need independent release schedules |
| Scaling and reliability | One application’s scaling profile is adequate | Specific components have materially different scaling or availability needs |
| Operations | Capacity for distributed-system operations is limited | The team can deploy, monitor, trace, and support multiple services |
| Data and transactions | Workflows benefit from local transactions and shared data operations | Service-owned data and cross-service coordination suit the workflows |
Are microservices worth it for a small team?
Not simply because they are associated with scale. Microservices add work that is easy to underestimate when few people must build and operate the product. Network calls introduce latency and can fail; following a user request across services makes debugging and tracing more involved; each service adds operational responsibilities; and work that once fit in one transaction may require cross-service consistency handling. Martin Fowler summarized one core cost in “Microservice Trade-Offs”: “Distributed systems are harder to program, since remote calls are slow and are always at risk of failure.”
Those costs do not make microservices inherently wrong. They are worthwhile when independent delivery, ownership, or scaling solves a real constraint and the team can support the resulting system. AWS puts the context plainly: “What is right for a new product racing to first launch is different than what a workload built to scale from the start needs.” AWS Well-Architected Framework: REL03-BP01

When should a startup switch from a monolith to microservices?
Consider a split when a specific, persistent problem maps to a stable module boundary—not merely because the company is older or the application has grown. Useful signals include releases repeatedly blocked by unrelated changes, a component with materially different scaling needs, ongoing ownership conflicts, or a capability whose boundaries and dependencies are now well understood. These are practical signals inferred from the trade-offs, not published cutoff rules.
Before decomposing, clarify the business use case, the technology, and the dependencies involved. Possible decomposition approaches include organizing around business capabilities or subdomains, as well as transaction and team boundaries. The right cut depends on the workflow and its data relationships; splitting a codebase by technical layer alone may leave services tightly coupled. See AWS Prescriptive Guidance: Decomposing monoliths into microservices and Decompose by transactions.

How can you move from a monolith without a full rewrite?
For an existing application, an incremental strangler approach lets old and new implementations coexist while selected functionality moves behind routing. The old path can be retired after the replacement is safe. Plan how to reverse or reroute a change if it fails; the proxy or facade used to direct traffic can itself become a bottleneck or failure point. AWS Prescriptive Guidance: Strangler fig pattern
- Establish boundaries inside the application. Define modules around capabilities and protect their interfaces with tests.
- Identify a concrete constraint. Look for recurring release, scaling, or ownership problems that an independent service could solve.
- Map the capability and its dependencies. Understand its business purpose, data, transactions, and callers before choosing a service boundary.
- Move one selected capability. Route only the relevant functionality to the new implementation while the existing application continues to serve the rest.
- Verify and retain a recovery route. Confirm the replacement works in the real workflow and keep a rollback plan before retiring the old path.
Can a monolith scale as a startup grows?
A monolith can remain a practical choice as a product grows, provided its internal structure and deployment continue to fit the team’s needs. The relevant question is not whether growth is expected, but whether a particular capability needs a boundary the single deployment cannot provide efficiently. The available guidance establishes no universal headcount, traffic, user-count, cost, or performance threshold at which a startup should switch.
