You can monitor public YouTube channel uploads without calling the YouTube Data API: use YouTube’s channel Atom feed, or subscribe to its documented push-notification service to have feed events sent to your callback endpoint. For personal alerts, YouTube’s Subscriptions feed and notification bell are easier, but notifications are not guaranteed for every upload.

How to monitor a channel with its feed
YouTube documents this Atom feed pattern for a channel: https://www.youtube.com/feeds/videos.xml?channel_id=CHANNEL_ID. Replace CHANNEL_ID with the channel’s ID. This is the direct feed URL to use as the topic for push notifications.

For automated monitoring, YouTube’s documented push flow uses the feed as the topic and sends notifications to a callback endpoint after you subscribe to the Google hub in subscribe mode. YouTube describes push as “much more efficient than polling-based solutions.” See YouTube’s push notifications guide for the required request and callback details.

- Make a callback endpoint reachable from the internet. Your service needs to receive the Atom notifications sent by the hub.
- Subscribe to the hub. Send the documented hub subscription request in
subscribemode, using the channel feed URL as the topic. - Process incoming events. Extract the video and channel identifiers from each notification and trigger your own alert, log, or workflow.
- Monitor your integration. Track whether your callback is healthy and whether events are being processed. The documentation does not promise a delivery SLA or explain recovery guarantees after callback failures, so do not treat this as guaranteed delivery.
The documented event types include uploads and changes to a video’s title or description. The feed-and-push route is an upload-monitoring hook, not a substitute for every query or data capability in the Data API.

For personal alerts, use subscriptions and the bell
If you only want to know when channels you follow publish videos, subscribe to the channel and choose a notification setting that suits you, such as “All notifications.” You can also check the Subscriptions feed for recent uploads. YouTube Help cautions that “not every new upload will result in a notification”; settings and delivery can differ by device. See YouTube’s notification guidance.
Why avoiding the Data API can help with quota
Google’s current YouTube Data API documentation lists a default allocation of 10,000 units per day combined for most endpoints. It also lists separate defaults of 100 search.list calls per day and 100 videos.insert calls per day. Each request—including an invalid one—uses at least one quota point; read operations commonly cost one unit and write operations commonly cost 50, with method-specific exceptions. Google says defaults can change and additional quota can be requested, so check your project’s live Quotas page before building around a number. For a known list of public channels and an upload-alert use case, a feed and webhook can avoid repeated Data API polling. It does not remove quota from API features that you still choose to call, nor does it provide search or full resource retrieval. Use the API when those capabilities are the requirement.

The YouTube Analytics API retrieves reports for a channel or content owner and requires OAuth authorization. The YouTube Reporting API is designed around scheduled bulk reports. These are for authorized creator or content-owner reporting, not a way to monitor arbitrary public channels without authorization.
