You can get event-driven alerts for a Google Business Profile account by linking it to a Cloud Pub/Sub topic through the My Business Notifications API. You choose which notification types the account publishes, and that includes Google updates. The route has limits. It is set per account, it needs approved API access, and it is not a documented feed of every field change. This guide covers the setup, the authorization it needs, and what Google’s documentation does not promise.
What the integration does, and what it does not
Google Business Profile notifications work by type. Google’s API reference lists supported categories: Google updates, new and updated reviews, customer media, questions and answers, duplicate location changes, and Voice of Merchant updates. For monitoring Google-originated changes, the Google update category is the one to enable where it applies.

Treat this as a set of alerts, not a changelog. Google’s documentation does not establish that:

- every individual profile field edit is reported; or
- each message carries the full current profile record.
A sound design uses a notification as a trigger. Your application then reads the profile through the API and compares it with what it has stored. Check the event types you depend on against Google’s current notification-type reference before you build on them.
#1 Best Overall
Prerequisites
- Approved Business Profile API access. Google says the API is available to projects whose access request was approved. A quota of zero means access has not been granted. Asking for a larger quota will not fix that.
- A Google Cloud project with the relevant APIs enabled and OAuth client credentials created.
- An OAuth 2.0 token for requests that touch private user data. Notification settings require the
https://www.googleapis.com/auth/business.managescope.
Set up notifications step by step
- Complete the access prerequisites. Get Business Profile API access approved, enable the APIs in your Cloud project, and create OAuth credentials.
- Create a Pub/Sub topic. Note its fully qualified name (project and topic), because you will pass it to the API.
- Grant publish rights to Google. On that topic, give
[email protected]thepubsub.topics.publishpermission. A topic without this grant does not meet the setup requirement. - Create a subscriber. Set up a push or pull subscription using Cloud Pub/Sub’s subscriber documentation. Google’s Business Profile guide leaves this step to Pub/Sub.
- Link the account. Call
accounts.updateNotificationSettingon the resourceaccounts/{account_id}/notificationSetting. Set the topic and the notification types you want, and authorize with thebusiness.managescope. - Repeat for each account. Each Business Profile account that should publish to the topic needs its own call.
- Verify. Call
accounts.getNotificationSettingto read back the stored topic and types.
To stop delivery, clear the topic or the notification types in the setting. Check the current API reference for the exact update-mask behavior.
Design decisions
One setting and one topic per account
An account has a single notification setting, so it can publish to only one topic. If you manage many accounts, you have two options:
Rank #2
| Approach | What it means |
|---|---|
| Shared topic | Point every account at one topic, with one subscriber pipeline handling all of them. |
| Topic per account | Each account gets its own topic, which gives you separate permissions and separate consumers. |
Google’s documentation does not say which is better. Your choice depends on how you want to separate consumers and permissions.

Push or pull
Google requires a push or pull subscriber. Push suits an application with a reachable endpoint that wants messages delivered to it. Pull suits a worker that fetches messages when it is ready. Delivery semantics, ordering, and retry behavior come from Cloud Pub/Sub’s own documentation, not from the Business Profile guide.
Rank #3
Quotas and limits
| Limit | Value (Google quota documentation, accessed 2026) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Profile edits | 10 per minute per Business Profile | Google says this cannot be increased. |
| Notifications API requests | 300 per minute | This limits your calls to the API. It is not a figure for Pub/Sub delivery capacity. |
Google recommends Pub/Sub over polling for keeping a database current. Polling spends API quota, while notifications do not.
Not established by Google’s documentation
- Delivery guarantees, ordering, and duplicate handling for these notifications.
- Retry limits.
- The exact message payload structure.
Build the consumer defensively. Make processing idempotent and re-fetch the profile instead of trusting the message as the full record. Do not assume messages are unique, ordered, or exhaustive.

Avoid the deprecated v4 route
The older v4 Notifications resource, with its accounts/*/notifications paths, is deprecated. Google recommends the current Notifications API. Older tutorials and code samples that use the v4 path will mislead you.

Troubleshooting
- Quota shows zero or the API is not visible: API access has not been granted to your project. Complete or follow up on the access request.
- Nothing arrives after a successful link: check that the Google service account has publish permission on the topic, that your subscription is attached to that topic, and that the notification types you enabled match the event you expect.
- Authorization errors: confirm the token carries the
business.managescope. - One account’s events go to the wrong place: each account holds a single topic, so read back its setting with
getNotificationSetting.
