There is no reliable evidence that macOS Mojave is universally faster than macOS Catalina. The available benchmark comparison changes the hardware, virtualization setup, memory, and Geekbench version along with the operating system, so it cannot show which OS is quicker on the same Mac. Your model, workload, installed apps, and system condition matter more than the scores alone.
What the available benchmark does—and does not—show
A Geekbench Browser comparison reports these historical results:

| Operating system and test | Single-core | Multi-core | Recorded configuration |
|---|---|---|---|
| macOS Catalina 10.15.4; Geekbench 4.4.2 Tryout | 5,700 | 27,296 | Listed as “Proxmox”; Intel Core 2 Duo P9xxx-class processor; 16 GB DDR3; 3 processors, 6 cores, 12 threads |
| macOS Mojave 10.14.3; Geekbench 4.3.3 Tryout | 5,965 | 28,276 | Listed as “Bare Metal”; Intel Core i7-8700; 32 GB DDR4; 1 processor, 6 cores, 12 threads |
Although both entries use the MacBookPro15,2 identifier, they are not a controlled same-machine test: the processor and memory differ, one result is labeled as running in Proxmox, and the Geekbench versions are not the same. The scores cannot isolate the effect of Mojave versus Catalina. See the Geekbench comparison.
Why speed depends on your Mac and workload
Overall responsiveness is not a single number. Boot time, opening apps, browsing, file operations, and demanding work can behave differently. Results can also be affected by the Mac’s exact hardware, storage, available space, background activity, thermal state, and whether the system was upgraded or freshly installed. Those factors were not controlled in the benchmark comparison above.

Informal reports do not settle the question either: users in a MacRumors discussion and a Reddit discussion describe mixed experiences, including perceived improvements, slowdowns, and little difference. These are individual anecdotes, not representative performance tests.
Requirements and Mac compatibility
Apple’s listed minimum memory and upgrade storage figures differ, but they are requirements—not evidence that one OS runs faster. Apple specifies 2 GB of memory for Mojave and 4 GB for Catalina. Both technical-specification pages list 12.5 GB of available storage for their stated upgrade paths from qualifying earlier OS versions.

These are the listed requirements and model families on Apple’s technical-specification pages; check the exact model and upgrade path rather than relying only on the family name. Apple’s Mojave specifications and Apple’s Catalina specifications provide the details.

Apple’s Mojave 10.14 release notes warn that “Using Carbon File Manager APIs and other APIs based on the FSRef structure might slow system performance when using APFS-formatted volumes.” This is a specific caveat for software using those APIs; it is not a general finding that Mojave is slower.

Apple’s Catalina 10.15 release notes note that Macs containing both Mojave 10.14 and Catalina 10.15 volumes might experience problems searching in Mail. That coexistence issue is not a speed comparison.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to choose between Mojave and Catalina
- Identify your exact Mac model. Compare it with Apple’s supported-model lists, paying particular attention to the different Mac Pro support criteria.
- Check memory and storage. Catalina lists a higher minimum memory requirement. Confirm available storage for the applicable upgrade path before proceeding.
- Check your essential apps and peripherals. The available evidence does not establish compatibility for specific third-party software or devices, so verify the versions you rely on before changing systems.
- Prioritize the workload you actually use. If speed is the deciding factor, compare the systems on the same Mac with the same app versions and repeatable tasks—such as launching your usual apps, browsing, or handling representative files—under similar conditions.
Without that same-Mac comparison, the most accurate answer to “Is Mojave faster than Catalina?” is that neither has been established as the overall winner. Choose based on compatibility and your own repeatable workload results, not the mismatched scores above.
