A capacitively coupled alternating electric field helped researchers synthesize the metal–organic framework UiO-66 in 25 minutes, with crystallinity and stability comparable to traditionally made material. The method places ring electrodes around a glass reaction tube rather than immersing electrodes in the mixture. It is a promising laboratory result—not yet evidence of industrial-scale production.
What “electrifying” MOF synthesis means
Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) are materials built from metal ions or clusters connected by organic linkers. In this study, the researchers applied a capacitively coupled alternating electric field, abbreviated CCAEF, to the reaction vessel. Ring electrodes sat around the outside of a glass tube, coupling the field into the reaction without electrodes immersed in the mixture. The study, published in ACS Central Science, reports using this approach to speed framework formation.

How quickly did it work?
UiO-66: 25 minutes
The researchers report synthesizing UiO-66 in 25 minutes under relatively mild conditions. They describe the resulting material’s crystallinity and stability as comparable to those of traditionally synthesized UiO-66. That comparison concerns those reported properties; it does not by itself establish equivalent yield, energy use, cost, or performance in every application.

The study also applied CCAEF to the zirconium frameworks UiO-66-NH2, MOF-801, and MOF-808, and to the non-zirconium frameworks MOF-5, MIL-88A, and MIL-53. The abstract does not give a separate synthesis time for each framework. Chemistry World reports that tested metal-and-linker combinations took 15–60 minutes overall, but that range should not be read as an individual time for every named MOF. Chemistry World’s coverage also reports an approximately 20% reduction in the apparent energy barrier compared with traditional synthesis.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Why might an electric field speed formation?
The authors propose that the field activates the precursor solution and lowers the energy barrier to nucleation—the initial formation of the crystal structures from which a MOF grows. Their abstract also reports enhanced electron transfer and reduction of multivalent metals, as well as superior catalytic activity in the system they studied. These are reported findings and proposed explanations for this work, not a guarantee that every MOF reaction will behave the same way.
What the result does—and does not—establish
A useful laboratory demonstration
The 25-minute UiO-66 result and tests across several framework chemistries show that CCAEF is worth further study as a synthesis approach. The reported scale remains around one gram, according to Chemistry World, so the demonstration is still at laboratory scale.

Not yet a scale-up or energy-cost case
The available reporting does not establish industrial throughput or provide a complete comparison of energy consumption, yield, cost, reproducibility, or scale-up behavior. Nor does this study establish that CCAEF is the fastest MOF synthesis method overall: microwave-assisted and mechanochemical approaches also exist, and the reported work is not a comprehensive head-to-head ranking. A meaningful comparison would need to account for time, energy, yield, crystallinity and stability, solvent and pressure conditions, equipment, and production scale.
