Module Federation: How to Structure an Enterprise Micro-Frontend Platform

Module Federation enables runtime composition of independently built frontend modules. Learn how to structure shell and remote ownership, govern dependencies and delivery, and decide whether the trade-offs fit your teams.

Module Federation lets separately built frontend applications expose and consume modules at runtime, so a shell can assemble independently delivered parts of an application. It supplies a composition mechanism—not automatic team autonomy, compatibility, or safe independent deployment. An enterprise platform must define ownership, routing, dependency and release contracts, runtime identity, observability, and cross-remote testing. The architecture is worthwhile when those controls enable real release or ownership boundaries that a more coordinated frontend cannot meet.

What Module Federation does—and what it does not

In Webpack’s model, each build can act as a container: it can expose selected modules for other builds to consume, and it can consume modules exposed by other containers. A local module is part of the current build; a remote module is fetched from a remote container at runtime. Remote loading is asynchronous and occurs as part of chunk loading, commonly through an import().

The high-level ModuleFederationPlugin combines container creation with the mechanisms for referring to remotes. Containers can consume from other containers. Shared modules are registered with available versions in a named share scope, through which builds can provide and consume dependencies.

This changes where and when composition happens: a consumer need not include a remote module in its own build. It does not, by itself, make every part of an application independently deployable or guarantee that independently built parts will work together. Teams still need compatible contracts, coordinated dependency policies, release practices, and tests that exercise the composed application.

How a shell and its remotes fit together

A common platform shape is a shell that owns the application’s global frame and navigation while remote teams own discrete functions or views. The shell selects a route and loads the remote needed for that view. AWS’s Angular reference pattern uses this vertical split: the shell manages global routing and integrates remote applications, loading one micro-frontend at a time as needed. That is an example, not a requirement that every platform load only one remote per page.

Part Typical ownership Contract the platform should make explicit
Shell or host Composition, global navigation, and route selection How routes map to remotes; how navigation and shared application context work; what users see if a remote cannot load
Remote An encapsulated function, view, or group of views Exposed module interface, supported inputs and events, required dependencies, and compatibility expectations
Platform Rules and tooling that span builds Build identity, dependency policy, delivery conventions, observability, and integration-test requirements

These boundaries work best when they follow durable ownership and release needs. Splitting a screen into remotes without a team or deployment boundary to match can add coordination while leaving the underlying work coupled.

Which contracts must an enterprise platform govern?

Routing and module interfaces

Decide which component owns route selection, how a route resolves to a remote, and whether remotes own internal navigation beneath their entry point. Specify the exposed module’s interface and how it receives inputs or communicates changes. A route that loads successfully is not enough if the shell and remote disagree about navigation, state, or expected behavior.

Dependencies and shared modules

A share scope is a runtime coordination mechanism, not a substitute for dependency management. Set a policy for which packages may be shared, how acceptable versions are determined, and what happens when a remote requests a version outside that policy. Sharing can reduce duplicated dependencies, but it also introduces compatibility decisions; allowing each team to choose independently can create version conflicts, while leaving everything unshared can duplicate code.

Build identity

Every build loaded in the same document needs a unique Webpack output.uniqueName. Duplicate names can collide in runtime globals and make builds indistinguishable to parts of shared-module runtime logic. Treat naming as a centrally checked platform control rather than a convention teams must remember informally.

Visual consistency and failure behavior

Define how remotes use the product’s design system and what their loading and error states look like within the shell. Decide which failures are isolated to one view and which prevent navigation or application use. The user-facing behavior should be designed and tested; federation does not prescribe a universal fallback.

How manifests and snapshots fit into delivery

Module Federation’s manifest documentation describes metadata that can include remote entry URLs, exposed modules, JavaScript and CSS assets, shared-dependency information, and type-file URLs. A snapshot reorganizes this information for runtime consumption. Tooling can use it to prepare or preload remote assets; a deployment service can prepare a snapshot ahead of time, potentially avoiding a manifest request in the browser. These are delivery options, not a guaranteed performance improvement: the result depends on how the platform prepares and consumes the metadata.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose a delivery contract that lets the shell discover the intended remote version and its assets without relying on undocumented assumptions. Make the release process clear about when metadata becomes available and how the platform responds if a deployment points to missing or incompatible assets.

What an enterprise MFE platform needs operationally

Independent builds shift some work from a single build pipeline into integration and runtime operations. The platform should make those responsibilities visible and repeatable.

  • Ownership: name the shell owner, each remote owner, and the team responsible for shared platform rules.
  • Release coordination: define how remote releases are discovered, how compatibility is maintained, and how a faulty release can be rolled back or replaced.
  • Observability: make it possible to identify which remote and build version failed, where loading failed, and whether the issue is in discovery, asset delivery, or module execution.
  • Testing: test remotes in isolation, then test shell-to-remote contracts and important end-to-end user journeys across the composed application. A remote passing its own tests does not establish that the assembled application works.
  • Performance review: measure the actual loading behavior of the routes and pages users visit, especially when a page composes multiple remotes. Runtime composition adds loading and integration work that a local build does not have in the same form.

AWS’s guidance identifies orchestration and communication overhead, possible performance overhead, code duplication, dependency-version coordination, and added integration and end-to-end testing as costs to account for. Clear responsibilities, contracts, version strategies, design systems, and automated testing and deployment pipelines help manage those costs; they do not make them disappear.

When is Module Federation a sensible choice?

There is no universal team-size or application-size threshold that makes a frontend ready for federation. Decide based on the release and ownership problem you are trying to solve, then account for the operational burden of runtime composition.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Consider it when teams have meaningful ownership boundaries and need to develop or release their parts with less dependence on a single frontend release train.
  • Check the fit carefully when teams need autonomy but share routes, dependencies, design rules, or user journeys that require substantial ongoing coordination.
  • Prefer a simpler composition model when independent runtime delivery does not solve a real constraint and one coordinated build is easier to operate and test.

Compare options against the same practical questions: Do modules need to be loaded at runtime, or can composition happen at build time? Who controls releases and compatibility? How will dependencies be shared or duplicated? How will the integrated application be tested and operated? What is the performance effect on pages that load several parts? AWS discusses Module Federation alongside other composition approaches, including single-spa and server-rendered approaches, but does not establish a universally superior choice among them.

What the AWS implementation example does—and does not—establish

AWS’s Angular portal example specifies Angular CLI 13.1.2 or later, @angular-architects/module-federation 14.0.1 or later, Webpack 5.4.0 or later, and AWS Amplify Gen 1 for that particular implementation. These are prerequisites stated for the example, not general current recommendations for every Module Federation platform.

The Module Federation project has announced that MF 2.0 is stable and describes support across a broader ecosystem, naming Webpack, Rspack, Rollup, and Rolldown as bundlers and Vite among build tools. It also describes use in Node.js and related SSR/BFF settings. Those are project-published ecosystem claims; they do not, on their own, establish comparative performance or make every feature interchangeable across tools.
