On 11 October 2026, Prime Minister Narendra Modi dedicated IIT Madras’s Sudha Gopalakrishnan Brain Centre to the nation and announced a mission to map more than 100 human brains. The planned output is three-dimensional brain atlases at cellular resolution, spanning fetal development to old age. The announcement also included C-STROKE, an atlas of tissue affected by ischaemic stroke.
What the mission is intended to produce
The mission is a research-mapping programme associated with the Sudha Gopalakrishnan Brain Centre at IIT Madras. Contemporary reports describe a target of more than 100 brains and atlases that represent brain structure in three dimensions at cellular resolution across the lifespan. The reports do not establish whether the target is already being collected or remains prospective, nor do they give a completion date.

The centre’s broader imaging work has been described by the Government of India as generating cell-resolution digital 3D images of whole human brains. In practical terms, this kind of mapping aims to let researchers examine microscopic cellular features in the context of larger structures and their locations throughout a brain—not just as isolated tissue samples.

Cellular resolution means that the images are intended to show structures at the scale of cells, rather than only broad anatomical regions. Three-dimensional reconstruction links images across tissue depth so researchers can study how those features are arranged through larger volumes of brain tissue. The centre’s platform is described as whole-brain imaging that connects large-scale anatomy with microscopic structure.

- 【2X Life-Size Brain Model】This medical-grade brain model magnifies 130 key structures at 2X scale, with 4 magnetic detachable sections highlighting emotion, memory, and learning centers. Perfect for Schools, hospitals, visual aids in physical health teaching. Our brain model anatomy can be used in therapy practices or college anatomy class to teach clients or study what's happening in parts of the brain during stress, anxiety, panic, emotions, memories, etc
- 【Colored Design and Laser-Engraved Labels】The brain model for neuroscience consists of nine vividly colored sections to easily distinguish between the different brain structures, that resist fading, blurring, or smudging.Unlike the hand-written labels used by other living human brain model that fade over time, even without cleaning.
- 【Healty Material Quality】The brain anatomy model is made of green and washable PVC material. Durable, Easy to clean.Due to closed space shippment, there may be some smell, but smell will fade away after putting in open air.
- 【4 Magnetic Detachable Sections】The human brain model is double-life-size and consists of 4 parts that are easy to detach and reassemble. This allows for comprehensive neuroanatomy study of the cerebral hemispheres, brain stem and cerebellum. The 4 detachable parts are held together using magnets making it the safest model for even kids to use and study.
- 【Wide Application】 Our realistic human brain anatomical model 2-piece colour coded can as an ideal study tool for medical anatomy teachers or students, and children's interest development learning tool, which can be used in teaching explanation, doctor-patient communication, model display, learning research or laboratory exhibition.
The announcement reports the intended scale and output, but does not specify the mission’s full imaging protocols, instruments, staining methods, specimen-selection criteria, validation procedures, or data-sharing terms. Those details should not be assumed from the phrase “cellular resolution.”
How the announced atlases fit together
The brain-centre reports describe several atlas resources alongside the wider multi-brain mission. Each focuses on a particular developmental stage, anatomical region, or disease-related tissue.

- 2X Life-Size Detailed Brain Model: This anatomically accurate 2X life-size human brain model clearly displays 131 labeled brain structures, allowing students and professionals to explore key regions related to memory, emotion, learning, and sensory functions with greater clarity than standard-size models.
- 4 Detachable Magnetic Parts: The brain anatomy model separates into 4 detachable sections, including the cerebral hemispheres, cerebellum, and brainstem. Magnetic connections allow easy assembly and disassembly, making it ideal for hands-on demonstrations and interactive learning.
- Color-Coded & Laser-Engraved Labeled: Brain regions are color-coded for easy identification, while precision laser engraved labels ensure structure names remain clear and will not fade, blur, or wear off even after repeated handling.
- Durable Medical-Grade Material: Made from high-quality PVC, this brain model is durable, washable, and designed for long-term educational use. The sturdy display base keeps the model stable for classroom demonstrations or desk display.
- Complete Learning Kit: The package includes 1× 2X life-size brain model (4 parts), 1× display base, 1× brain anatomy study guide, and 1× brain learning reference card, providing a complete set for teaching, studying, and understanding brain structures.
| Resource | Focus | Reported scope |
|---|---|---|
| DHARANI | Human fetal brain | Three-dimensional atlas released in 2024, reported to contain digital images of 5,132 brain sections. |
| ANCHOR | Human brainstem | Three-dimensional atlas released in June 2026, reported to map more than 200 nuclei and fibre tracts. Its full name is “Atlas of Neurochemical Characterization of the Human Brainstem with 3D Reconstruction.” |
| C-STROKE | Ischaemic stroke-affected brain tissue | Reported to contain more than 1,000 annotated microscopic sections from affected tissue. |
| More-than-100-brain mission | Brains across the lifespan | Announced target of more than 100 human brains mapped into cellular-resolution three-dimensional atlases, from fetal development to old age. |
For ANCHOR, Deccan Chronicle additionally reported that the atlas used more than 800 serial histological sections from three specimens and eight immunostaining techniques. These method figures are specific to that report and should not be taken as the protocol for the broader mission.

Ischaemic stroke occurs when blood flow to part of the brain is interrupted. C-STROKE is described as a research atlas of affected tissue, with more than 1,000 annotated microscopic sections. Such a resource can support investigation of tissue changes and potential therapeutic targets by making detailed observations available for study.

- 11 Part: The skull model consists of 3 part. The brain model consists of 8 components: sagittal section of brain, cerebral hemisphere, cerebellum and brainstem.
- Numeric Marker: The brain model features a labeled diagram for 32 numeric marker. The skull model includes a labeled diagram for 55 numeric marker.
- Material: Made of robust PVC material. Light-weight, high strength, anti-corrosion, long term service.
The announcement does not show that C-STROKE or the wider mapping mission has produced a clinical diagnostic test or treatment. An atlas is a research resource; it is not, by itself, evidence that a new therapy is ready for patients.

The announcement reports the mission’s target and broad aims, but the available coverage does not settle how it will be funded or governed, which specimens will be included, what consent criteria apply, when the target is expected to be reached, or how researchers will access the resulting data. These are important practical details for understanding the programme, but they are not specified in the reports of the launch.
