Start each Modern Warfare Zombies (MWZ) deployment with one goal, build strength in the Low Threat Zone, and extract before the shutdown event if you want to keep the run’s progress and avoid risking your Operator. Activision describes MWZ as an open-world PvE mode included with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III; its guide says you must own MWIII to access it.
Before infil, choose what this run is for
In the lobby, check your equipped mission, Operator, weapons, gear, and carried Acquisitions. Activision warns that gear taken into a run can be lost if you drop it or your Operator is eliminated, so bring items you intend to use rather than treating your inventory as risk-free storage.

Pick one main objective: advance a story mission, earn Essence and other resources through Contracts, explore, or help your squad. That choice should set your risk tolerance. If you are preparing for a story mission, improve your equipment before using its special exfil: at the mission location, your squad is on its own without support from other players in the general session.

Build up in the Low Threat Zone before pushing inward
Deployments begin in the Low Threat Zone. Activision describes the zones as distinct tiers of difficulty, with the center of the map the most dangerous. Use the opening portion of a run to get equipped rather than crossing into a harder zone just because it is nearby.
- Take Contracts. They are a practical early source of Essence, XP, and potentially Acquisitions. Essence can be spent on purchases and upgrades; Activision says Contracts in higher Threat Levels offer better rewards.
- Upgrade for the next step. Buy or secure the weapon and equipment improvements that fit your objective. The beginner guide specifically recommends finding a high-rarity weapon and Pack-a-Punching it before entering the Medium Threat Zone.
- Check the squad’s readiness. Consider weapons, armor, and whether teammates can support the plan before entering a more dangerous area. Better potential rewards come with greater risk, including the possibility of losing carried gear if the Operator is eliminated.
- Move up only when the reward fits the risk. If your objective is still achievable in a safer area, you do not have to push farther. If you need stronger Contract rewards or mission progress, go in with a clear reason and an exit plan.
Know what an activity asks you to do
Contracts provide structure in an open map, but optional activities can put you in different kinds of danger. Activision’s guides name Spore Control Contracts, Aether Nests and Zombie Strongholds, Harvester Orbs, and Merc Camps. For example, an Aether Nest is toxic: find and destroy its nodes. At a Merc Camp, you face mercenaries while zombies also attack them. Read the objective before committing, and account for both the task and the enemies it draws.

Match your loadout and Field Upgrade to your role
Activision’s tactics guide says there is no single correct loadout: equipment can suit your playstyle or balance the squad. Its examples are illustrations, not verified current meta builds or a ranking of the best weapons.

| Example role | Guide’s example equipment | What the Field Upgrade does, as described by Activision |
|---|---|---|
| Trap and damage control | “Trap Enthusiast”: SMG and assault rifle, stun grenade, proximity mine | Energy Mine spawns an explosive that deals massive damage to enemies who set it off. |
| Tank and teammate support | “Heavy Tank”: shotgun and pistol, stim, claymore | Frenzied Guard restores armor to full and forces nearby enemies to target you for 10 seconds; enemy kills repair armor during that time. |
The guide also lists Healing Aura, Frost Blast, Aether Shroud, and Tesla Storm as Field Upgrades, but these examples do not establish their current effects or relative strength. Check the in-game descriptions when choosing one. The Frenzied Guard example is useful when a teammate needs pressure drawn away; Energy Mine is the guide’s example of luring enemies toward an explosive.

Choose between mission progress, resources, and exploration
Story progression is organized through Acts and tiered missions. Ordinary missions can award Acquisitions, weapons, XP, and other rewards. A failed or unfinished mission does not necessarily make a deployment wasted: Activision’s beginner guide notes that XP, Acquisitions, and experience gained still contribute to progress.
Contracts are a more flexible choice when your priority is Essence and rewards, while exploration suits a run without a strict mission target. You can combine objectives, but each extra activity consumes time and may add risk. Keep the main goal in view so optional detours do not leave the squad underprepared for its intended task.

Watch the timer and extract on purpose
Activision’s guide describes a 45-minute deployment timer followed by a 15-minute shutdown event. These are guide-era mechanics stated on pages carrying a 2024 copyright; the pages do not establish whether every detail remains unchanged in the live service. You can extract earlier, and the guide advises leaving before shutdown consumes the squad.

An early extract secures a completed objective without spending the remaining time. Continuing may let you finish more work, but exposes the squad to further danger and the shutdown phase. Do not treat the full timer as a target you must use.
What the official guidance does—and does not—establish
Activision’s tactics guide, beginner guide, and overview and lore guide were accessed on October 7, 2026; their footers identify 2024 copyright, but do not establish exact publication or update dates. They explain foundational play, not current patch balance. They do not verify a present-day best-gun ranking, current bugs, store inventory, or whether every historical mechanic is unchanged. Treat the loadouts as examples and use current in-game descriptions for live equipment details.
