First, determine where the black screen occurs
Note when the display goes black and what still works. Can you hear game audio? Does the screen go black as the game starts, after reaching a menu, or during play? Does the display recover when you exit the game, or does it stay blank after restarting Windows? These details help separate a game-specific problem from a wider display or Windows issue; Activision’s published troubleshooting pages do not provide a black-screen-specific diagnostic flowchart.

- Only MWII goes black: Continue with the game and launcher checks below.
- Windows also goes blank: Treat this as a broader display or system problem, not just an MWII issue. Note whether the display returns after leaving the game or restarting the PC.
- You hear audio but see no picture: Record that detail, along with the point in startup or gameplay when it happens. It can help describe the symptom to Activision Support.
Try these fixes in order
1. Let shader preloading finish
When launching the game, stay on the Main Menu while shader preloading runs. Activision says it is important during the first boot and warns that navigating away from the Main Menu stops the process and can cause performance issues. Its guidance does not say that this will resolve every black screen, but it is a sensible first check.
2. Update Windows and check your graphics driver
Activision’s PC troubleshooting guidance supports Windows 10 and Windows 11 and recommends installing current Windows updates. The game’s published requirements specify a DirectX 12-compatible system. For graphics-driver updates, use Activision’s instructions at Updating Video Card Drivers on a PC; verify the current driver for your graphics hardware rather than relying on old MWII-specific driver values.

3. Repair the installation through your launcher
Use the repair option for the platform where you installed the game:
- Steam: Verify the integrity of the game files.
- Battle.net: Run Scan and Repair.
Activision lists these platform-specific options in its Modern Warfare II PC Troubleshooting guidance. Let the check finish, then launch the game again and see whether the symptom changes.

4. Temporarily close overlays and background utilities
Close overlays, recording tools, and input-remapping utilities before starting the game. Activision specifically names NZXT CAM, MSI Afterburner, and Razer Cortex as applications that may conflict. Treat them as candidates to test, not proven causes: close them, try launching MWII, then reopen them one at a time if you need to identify whether one affects your setup. Activision also recommends a clean boot if problems persist; its crash and freeze troubleshooting page provides related guidance.
Check the published requirements without treating them as a black-screen fix
Activision’s PC system-requirements page, updated September 1, 2023, gives the following hardware thresholds. They are the game’s published baseline, not a current buying guide, and meeting them does not establish the cause of a black screen.

Activision’s Known Issues in Modern Warfare II page was updated February 27, 2026. At that time, it listed PC performance loss but did not list a PC black-screen issue. The list can change, so check the current page for relevant updates.

Collect details before contacting support
If the issue continues, write down whether it happens at launch or during play, whether audio continues, whether Windows is affected outside the game, your launcher, and what changed after updates, file repair, or closing utilities. Activision’s known-issues page asks affected players reporting PC performance loss to contact support with a DxDiag file. For a black screen, use the current support route and report the symptom accurately; the cited guidance does not promise that a DxDiag will identify or fix its cause.
