There is no confirmed universal fix for Modern Warfare’s “DirectX unrecoverable error.” Start with Activision’s general PC crash checks—verify system requirements and ventilation, close overlays and other background tools, update the graphics driver, and repair or verify the game files. The exact error code and when the crash happens matter: “Dev Error 6068” and a suggested -d3d11 launch option are not interchangeable with an unspecified DirectX error.
First, identify the crash you are troubleshooting
Before changing settings, record the full error text and any code shown on screen. Also note the game version, Windows version, GPU model and driver version, launcher, and whether the failure happens at startup, while shaders are compiling, or during a match. Those details help distinguish a general crash from a narrower startup or hardware-specific problem.

Activision’s March 5, 2024 crash guidance says PC crashes can occur at launch or during public Multiplayer matches, but it does not document a guaranteed remedy for this particular DirectX message. Its recommendations are sensible first checks, not proof of a DirectX-specific cause: Activision’s Modern Warfare crash and freeze guidance.
Work through the safest checks in order
- Check requirements and cooling. Compare the PC with the game’s published requirements and make sure the computer has adequate ventilation. The Steam listing specifies DirectX 12, 64-bit Windows 10, 8 GB RAM, listed NVIDIA or AMD graphics hardware, and 175 GB of storage. These are listing requirements, not a guarantee of stability or a diagnosis of your crash: Steam’s Modern Warfare listing.
- Close interfering background tools. Exit overlays, recording software, input-remapping programs, and other background applications, then try launching again. Activision warns that such software may interfere even when it is not visibly running at launch. Its 2019 troubleshooting guide also names NZXT CAM, MSI Afterburner, and Razer Cortex as programs to disable if they conflict: Activision’s PC troubleshooting guide.
- Update the graphics driver. Install a current driver using the guidance for your graphics hardware, then restart the PC and test the game again. Activision’s crash guidance recommends updating video card drivers to its recommended versions; do not assume a driver update alone will resolve every DirectX crash.
- Repair or verify the game files in the launcher. In Battle.net, use Scan and Repair. In Steam, use the game’s file-integrity verification option. Activision’s PC guide describes these launcher-specific checks; its guidance dates to October 27, 2019, so the exact menu labels may differ in newer launcher builds.
- Allow shader preloading to finish. If shaders are compiling on first boot, wait for the process to complete before entering a game mode. Activision’s older PC guide says shader preloading is important during first boot and warns that entering a mode before completion may affect performance.
Choose the next step based on when it crashes
It fails as soon as the game starts
Prioritize closing background tools, updating the graphics driver, and repairing the files through the launcher. If the error began after a game or driver update, include that timing when seeking support rather than trying unrelated system changes.

It fails during shader compilation
Let shader preloading finish without entering a mode early. If the process repeatedly crashes, note that timing and provide it with the exact error and configuration details when contacting support.
It fails during a match
Check ventilation and close overlays, recorders, and remapping utilities before testing again. Activision notes that its reported PC crash scenarios include public Multiplayer matches, but this does not establish that every in-match failure has the same cause.

Use launch options and community workarounds cautiously
A Steam Community post from March 22, 2026, describes a -d3d11 launch option among possible fixes for a specific Windows 11/newer Nvidia GPU startup scenario. It is user-generated, applies to a narrower symptom pattern, and commenters report mixed results. Treat it as an anecdotal lead only when your operating system, GPU, launcher, game version, and startup symptoms match—not as an Activision-endorsed or universal fix: Steam Community startup guide.
Likewise, do not infer that “Dev Error 6068” is the same issue as an unspecified DirectX unrecoverable error just because both are discussed in community troubleshooting. Use the exact text and code displayed by your game to decide whether a workaround is relevant.

If the ordered checks do not help, use Activision Support and provide the error text and code, game version, Windows build, GPU and driver version, launcher, and crash timing. Activision’s Known Issues page, updated June 21, 2024, describes reported or identified issues under investigation or scheduled for fixes; the issue shown in its table is a PlayStation 5 installation-suspended problem, not this PC DirectX crash. Its absence does not establish that the crash has never occurred or is not being handled elsewhere: Activision’s Modern Warfare Known Issues page.
Avoid registry edits or disabling security features as generic fixes, and do not buy replacement hardware based only on this message. The cited guidance supports software and configuration checks, not a hardware replacement diagnosis.
