You can build an open-source digital business card as either a simple static profile or a self-hosted application. Give it a stable web address, a QR code for quick access, and a downloadable vCard so people can save your contact details. Add NFC only if tap-to-open sharing suits how you meet people.
Choose the kind of card you need
The main decision is how much functionality—and ongoing administration—you want. A static page can be enough for one person who needs a public profile and contact download. An application may suit a team or organization that needs accounts, multiple cards, analytics, or lead capture.

| Approach | What it can provide | Operational trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Static card | A contact page, QR or NFC entry, and a vCard file, as described by Posterity Consulting. | The repository describes an implementation with no backend, database, login, subscription, or analytics. Profile changes may require editing and redeploying the page. |
| Self-hosted card service | Swiish documents QR and direct-link sharing, vCard support, progressive web app features, and privacy controls. | It is a service to run and maintain. Its documented privacy controls are not a security guarantee. |
| Broader card platform | CardNexus documents card pages, QR and NFC setup, vCard downloads, organizations, analytics, and lead capture. | Its documentation describes Docker deployment, SQLite by default, and Postgres readiness. Accounts, data storage, and additional features bring more operational complexity. |
| Stateless contact cards | canid describes cards intended for sharing through QR, NFC, or a link. | The project makes its code available for self-hosting; the cited description does not establish the broader management features listed for CardNexus. |
These are project-documented features, not results of independent testing. Repositories and documentation can change, so check a project’s current license, installation instructions, releases, and feature availability before adopting it.
Plan what the card reveals
Decide which details should be public before choosing a template or deploying anything. A useful card might contain your name, role, organization, preferred contact route, and links you intend to share. Leave out personal details that are not needed for networking.
#1 Best Overall
- No app or device requirement: Share your dot.Profile with anyone, as others don't need an app or a dot.device to receive your information.
- Hassle-free sharing: Easily share your dot.Profile with unlimited free shares of your digital business card.
- Simple sharing process: Tap your dot.device to a compatible phone or scan the dot.Profile QR code to share your profile. Compatible with a wide range of phones.
- Update information on the go: Keep your dot.Profile up to date by easily modifying and updating your information as it changes, ensuring you always have the most accurate details.
- Privacy and security: Protect your information with dot, as no passwords are ever needed to link your social accounts. Dot uses only usernames and links to create your digital business card.
- Keep public contact fields distinct from information you would share only after a conversation.
- Consider whether the page should be discoverable by search engines. Swiish documents an option to block search engines, but that setting does not prevent every kind of access or exposure.
- Think carefully before enabling analytics or lead capture. Those features can involve collecting information about visitors or people who submit a form, as well as extra work to manage that data.
A product’s privacy settings describe intended behavior; they are not an independent security assessment. Do not treat a privacy control as proof that sensitive information is protected from all exposure.
Build the card around a stable link
Use a URL you can keep using if you change the page’s design or hosting. The profile address is the destination behind a QR code and any NFC tag, and it is easier to update than a printed code or encoded tag. The following sequence is a practical design pattern, not a tested installation guide for a particular project.

- FREE FOREVER, NO SUBSCRIPTION: Other NFC business cards charge you a monthly fee to keep sharing. Blinq doesn't. Share your digital card and manage unlimited contacts with context, at no ongoing cost, on any iPhone or Android.

- TAP TO SHARE INSTANTLY: Tap your card or scan the QR code, and your profile lands on any iPhone or Android in seconds. Ask for theirs back and Blinq saves it automatically, with context, no typing required.
- NO APP NEEDED FOR THEM TO RECEIVE YOUR CARD: Whoever you meet, they don't need the Blinq app or a Blinq card of their own. A tap or a scan, and your details are on their phone, every time.
- MORE THAN A DIGITAL CARD: Scan a paper card, use the AI notetaker to summarize your conversation, and let Blinq enrich the contact so nothing about that meeting slips away. This is the AI contacts app for people who meet people, free from day one.
- Set the public/private boundary. Write down the contact fields and links you want to publish, and omit anything you do not want publicly accessible.
- Select an architecture. Choose static files if a simple card with minimal administration meets your needs. Choose an application if you need the accounts or management features it documents, and are prepared to operate them.
- Create a profile route. Give the card a readable, stable URL on a domain you control where practical. Avoid making a QR code point to a temporary preview or a page you may soon move.
- Add the contact-file download. Provide a vCard alongside the profile so visitors can save your details in a contact app.
- Make a QR code for the profile URL. Test that it opens the intended page before sharing or printing it. A QR code is an access route, not a separate contact format.
- Deploy and check the result. Open the public card, confirm its links and vCard download work, and update the profile and export together when your contact details change.
Make the vCard useful beyond the web page
A profile page is easy to view, while a vCard is a file designed to represent and exchange contact information. They serve different purposes, so offering both gives visitors a choice. RFC 6350 defines the vCard format and requires a vCard object to include the VERSION and FN properties. The RFC Editor lists later updates to RFC 6350, including RFC 6868, RFC 9554, and RFC 9555; production exporters and parsers should account for the current standard and relevant updates.

Use QR and NFC as sharing options, not requirements
A QR code lets someone open the card’s web address with a compatible scanning flow. NFC can provide another way to open a link or share a card, but it is optional: a direct URL remains useful when scanning or tapping is inconvenient. Project documentation describes NFC setup, but it does not establish compatibility across every tag and phone.
If you use a writable NFC card or print a QR code on a physical handout, treat that item as a pointer to your online card. Check the link before distributing it, and keep the profile URL under your control so you can update the destination later. No particular NFC chip, card capacity, print size, or device compatibility is established here.

Match ongoing maintenance to the features you choose
With a static implementation, the main upkeep is keeping the page, links, and vCard current and redeploying when needed. A fuller service can centralize edits or organization management, but it also adds software and data-handling responsibilities. Before choosing one, consider who will apply updates, where contact information will be stored, and whether features such as analytics or lead capture are actually necessary.

Self-hosting gives you control over deployment, but it does not by itself establish how secure or private a service is. Review the project’s current documentation and configuration, and avoid collecting visitor data you do not need.
