Modern CSS features solve different problems: container queries let components respond to their own available space, cascade layers make precedence explicit, nesting keeps related rules together, and @supports lets you add enhancements without sacrificing a working baseline. Choose a feature for the constraint you actually have, and check support against your project’s target browsers.
Make a component adapt to its container
A media query responds to viewport or device conditions. A size container query responds to the dimensions of a declared containing element. Use a container query when the same component must work in different slots—such as a wide main column and a narrow sidebar—without relying on the overall viewport width. MDN explains the distinction and the requirement to declare a size-query container in its container queries documentation.
.card-shell {
container-type: inline-size;
}
.card {
display: grid;
gap: 1rem;
}
@container (width > 36rem) {
.card {
grid-template-columns: 8rem 1fr;
}
}
The base card is a single-column grid. When its containing context is wider than the chosen threshold, the card becomes two columns. The threshold here is illustrative, not a standard breakpoint: choose it by checking when the content can comfortably fit. Preserve a usable base layout for browsers that do not support the feature, and verify support for your actual target browsers.
Container queries or media queries?
| Question | Container query | Media query |
|---|---|---|
| What determines the condition? | The size of an explicitly declared containing element. | Viewport or device conditions. |
| When is it useful? | When a reusable component needs to adapt to the slot it occupies. | When the page or design should respond to the viewport or device. |
| What should you check? | Declare the query container and check support; retain a sensible base layout. | Check support for the conditions you use and retain a sensible baseline. |
Control precedence without escalating specificity
If third-party CSS keeps winning or fixes require increasingly specific selectors, use cascade layers to organize precedence. Declare the intended order near the start of your stylesheet, then put rules into those layers consistently:

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
@layer reset, vendor, base, components, utilities;
For example, vendor rules can be isolated in a layer and application styles placed in later layers. MDN describes cascade layers as a way to prioritize sections of CSS without fighting specificity in its cascade layers documentation.
There is an important boundary: normal unlayered author styles outrank normal layered author styles from the same origin. An unlayered declaration can therefore bypass the order you planned. If you can import third-party styles into a layer, doing so gives them an explicit place in the cascade; audit other unlayered rules as well.
Layers or selector escalation?
| Approach | Precedence | Third-party styles | Watch for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cascade layers | Explicit order between groups of rules. | Can be assigned to a layer when imported that way. | Normal unlayered author rules outrank normal layered author rules from the same origin. |
| More-specific selectors | Precedence follows selector specificity within the cascade. | May lead to competing selector escalation. | Harder-to-maintain selectors and a growing need to out-specify existing rules. |
Avoid making !important or duplicated selectors the default repair. MDN’s specificity guide advises against !important as the best approach and identifies cascade layers as a way to prioritize styles without relying on specificity.

Keep related component rules together with nesting
Native CSS nesting can keep a component’s base rule and conditional variants close together. For example:
.notice {
padding: 1rem;
&.notice--warning {
border-inline-start: 4px solid orange;
}
@media (width > 40rem) {
padding: 1.5rem;
}
}
This groups related rules; it does not make selector relationships irrelevant. Read the nested selector carefully, avoid deep nesting that hides how selectors resolve, and keep the resulting rules understandable. MDN documents nesting style rules and at-rules in its CSS nesting guide.
Add newer CSS without breaking the baseline
Start with CSS that preserves the content and primary interaction, then add styles that depend on a newer capability inside a feature query. For example:

.panel {
padding: 1rem;
}
@supports (display: grid) {
.panel {
display: grid;
gap: 1rem;
}
}
Here the panel remains padded if the tested declaration is unsupported; browsers that support it also get the grid layout. A feature query checks whether a browser supports a CSS declaration, but it does not prove that every detail of your design behaves as intended. Test the result against your supported browsers. MDN’s feature-query documentation recommends writing well-supported CSS before adding feature-query enhancements.
Use support milestones as signals, not guarantees
Google web.dev’s Baseline page lists size container queries as Newly available in February 2023, subgrid in September 2023, CSS nesting in August 2023, and :has() in December 2023. These dated milestones are useful context, not proof that every browser in your audience supports a feature. Check the current compatibility information for the specific feature and your project’s minimum browser versions before depending on it. See web.dev’s Baseline overview.

Let a parent theme influence descendants
A container style query can test a custom property on a container and use the result to style descendants. This can help when a parent establishes a theme value that child components should follow. MDN’s container style-query documentation describes custom-property style queries, but says that style queries for regular CSS declarations and properties are not yet supported in any browser. Do not assume you can query arbitrary computed properties.

- Upgraded Exquisite Craftsmanship: With an aluminum alloy housing and metal connector, the usbc to usb adapter is extremely durable and sturdy. Rigorously tested to withstand more than 10,000 times of plugging and unplugging, ensuring long-lasting performance
- Broad Compatible: The usb c to usb adapter widely supports all USB C/ USB A devices like laptops, tablets, cellphones, car chargers, and phone chargers. Such as compatible with MacBook Pro/Air 2023/2022, Thunderbolt 4/3 Devices,Apple MagSafe Watch 9/8/7/SE/Ultra, iPad Pro 2022/2021, Samsung Galaxy S23/S20/S10, and iPhone 17/16/15 Pro. Plug and play
- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Also avoid applying queried styles to the queried element itself where that could change the condition being evaluated and create an infinite loop. Keep the effect on descendants and verify the behavior in the browsers you support.

- The component’s slot changes: use a size container query when the component should respond to its declared container rather than the viewport.
- Styles keep overriding one another: define a layer order and keep rules assigned consistently; look for unlayered declarations that bypass it.
- Component variants are scattered: use nesting for locality, while keeping selector relationships shallow and clear.
- A capability may be missing: preserve a functional baseline and gate the enhancement with
@supports. - A parent needs to pass theme state to children: consider a custom-property style query, not a query for an arbitrary regular property.
