Modal, RunPod or Lambda Labs at a glance
| Provider | Primary model | Best fit | Scaling | Control level | Pricing model |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Modal | Code-defined serverless functions, jobs, notebooks and sandboxes | Bursty inference, APIs, batch processing and teams that want infrastructure abstracted | Automatic scaling for serverless workloads | Lower host-management burden; containers and GPU specs are declared in code | Per-second hosted execution; published GPU rates and plan charges |
| RunPod | Persistent GPU Pods plus Serverless endpoints and custom workers | Interactive development, flexible experiments, persistent machines and scalable inference | Pods are user-managed; Serverless workers scale with demand | High control over container, storage, GPU and runtime | Usage-based, per-second billing; product page advertises no egress fees or minimums |
| Lambda Labs | On-Demand Cloud Linux GPU virtual machines | Long-running jobs, SSH-style administration and multi-GPU training | You select and manage VM capacity | Conventional VM and operating-system control | Depends on selected instance, GPU shape and regional availability |
Modal says it pools capacity across major clouds. RunPod advertises more than 30 GPU models, 31 global regions and deployment in under 30 seconds, although inventory and those headline figures can change. Lambda ties each VM to a specific geographical region, so capacity must be checked when you purchase.
How the execution models differ
Serverless functions and jobs
With a serverless platform, you package application code and its container requirements while the provider starts GPU workers when work arrives. You do not reserve a machine for every hour of the month. This is especially useful when requests arrive in bursts, when batch jobs can run in parallel, or when you want an API that scales down after traffic falls.

Modal’s documentation describes low-latency inference with sub-second cold starts, massively parallel batch jobs, training and fine-tuning, GPU-backed notebooks and isolated Sandboxes. It hosts the environment and charges for actual usage, and its basic workflow does not require you to operate Kubernetes, build a separate Docker deployment process or maintain an AWS account.
Persistent Pods
A persistent GPU machine behaves more like a rented development server. You choose a GPU and keep a runtime, files and processes available while the Pod is running. That makes interactive debugging, repeated experiments and services with warm state straightforward, but you remain responsible for the machine’s utilization and for shutting it down when it is no longer needed.
RunPod explicitly positions Pods for users who want direct control over the container, storage, GPU type and runtime environment. Its documentation also covers Serverless endpoints and custom workers, so the same provider can serve as a hands-on development environment and as a demand-driven inference backend.

Lambda Labs’ On-Demand Cloud is a conventional Linux, GPU-backed virtual-machine service. You select a predefined instance shape and region, then manage the host as you would another Linux server. This model is predictable for software that expects a normal filesystem, system packages, background processes or direct host administration.
It is also well suited to distributed training when the required machine shape is available. Lambda lists one-, two-, four- and eight-GPU configurations for several families. The trade-off is that scaling is a capacity-management task: you must select, start, resize or stop the VM rather than relying on a serverless scheduler.

Modal: best default for code-first serverless AI
What Modal provides
Modal’s official guide covers low-latency inference, parallel batch workloads, training and fine-tuning, GPU notebooks and isolated Sandboxes. Containers and GPU specifications are defined in code. The platform hosts those environments and bills execution by the second, which removes much of the infrastructure work between a source repository and a running GPU job.
“You get full serverless execution and pricing because we host everything and charge per second of usage.”

This abstraction is valuable when your team wants to spend time on model code, request handling and data pipelines rather than cluster scheduling. It also makes ephemeral workloads economical: a worker can start for a request or batch shard and disappear when the work is finished.
Published Modal GPU rates
| GPU | Published rate per second | Approximate hourly equivalent | Qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| H100 SXM5 | $0.001097 | About $3.95 per hour | Published rate; provider pricing can change |
| A100 80 GB | $0.000694 | About $2.50 per hour | Published rate; provider pricing can change |
| T4 | $0.000164 | About $0.59 per hour | Published rate; provider pricing can change |
Modal lists a free Starter plan with $30 per month in compute credit. Its Team plan has a $250 monthly platform charge in addition to compute, and an Enterprise plan is available. The $30 credit is a plan allowance, not a promise that any particular GPU or region will always be available.
When Modal is the better choice
- Your API has uneven traffic and should scale GPU workers automatically.
- You run many independent batch items and want parallel execution without maintaining a cluster.
- You prefer declaring containers and GPU types in application code.
- Your team has limited appetite for host administration and Kubernetes operations.
- Short-lived jobs dominate, so paying for actual execution matters more than keeping a machine warm.
Modal trade-offs
The same abstraction that accelerates development limits traditional host control. A workflow that depends on a long-lived daemon, unusual kernel configuration, manually managed disks or a specific VM topology may require adaptation. You should also account for the Team platform charge if your organization needs that plan; comparing only the GPU-second rate can understate the monthly total.

RunPod: flexible control with Pods and Serverless
What RunPod provides
RunPod describes its Cloud GPUs as dedicated environments for development, training, fine-tuning, batch jobs and long-running workloads. Pods expose direct control over the container, storage, GPU type and runtime. The product page advertises more than 30 GPU models, 31 global regions, deployment in under 30 seconds and per-second billing with no egress fees or minimums. Those are current product claims, not a guarantee of inventory, speed or pricing for every GPU and region.
RunPod’s documentation also covers Serverless endpoints and custom workers for model inference, plus training and cloud application deployment. You can therefore keep a persistent Pod for experimentation and deploy a separate endpoint that adds or removes workers as requests change.
“Use Runpod Pods when you want direct control over the container, storage, GPU type, and runtime environment.”
RunPod product documentation
RunPod Pods versus RunPod Serverless
| Question | Pods | Serverless endpoints |
|---|---|---|
| What runs? | A persistent, user-managed GPU environment | Workers started to process endpoint requests |
| Best for | Interactive development, long sessions, custom services and stateful experiments | Inference APIs and demand that rises and falls |
| Control | Direct control of image, storage, GPU and runtime | Custom workers still let you define inference behavior, but scheduling is managed for you |
| Idle-cost risk | High if a running Pod sits unused | Lower for sporadic traffic because workers can scale with demand |
| Operational work | You manage the running environment and lifecycle | You package workers and configure the endpoint; the platform handles worker scaling |
How to choose between the two
- Choose a Pod if you need a shell, persistent files, a continuously running process or repeated manual experiments on one machine.
- Choose Serverless if requests are intermittent, you need an HTTP-style inference endpoint or you want worker count to follow demand.
- Use both when development requires a warm, interactive environment but production traffic is bursty. Keep model packaging and dependency versions aligned so a serverless worker reproduces the tested Pod environment.
- Measure idle time. A Pod that is running overnight can cost more than a serverless endpoint processing the same number of requests, even if the Pod’s per-second GPU rate looks attractive.
When RunPod is the better choice
- You need to select among many GPU models or regions for a particular experiment.
- Container, disk and runtime settings are part of the experiment itself.
- You want a persistent machine for development but a serverless option for public inference.
- Your workload is long-running enough that a continuously available environment simplifies operations.
- You value per-second usage billing and the advertised absence of egress fees or minimums, subject to current product terms.
Lambda Labs: conventional VMs for training and long-running jobs
Available instance families and shapes
Lambda’s On-Demand Cloud documentation lists B200, GH200, H100, A100, A10, A6000, Tesla V100 and RTX 6000 families. Several families are offered in one-, two-, four- and eight-GPU configurations. The exact combinations and capacity are region-dependent, so select a shape only after confirming it is available where you need it.
| Lambda capability | What it means for a workload |
|---|---|
| Linux GPU virtual machine | Use normal host tools, filesystems, system packages and process managers |
| Multiple predefined GPU counts | Match a training job to one, two, four or eight GPUs where the selected family supports that shape |
| Region-specific capacity | Latency, inventory and launch success depend on the chosen geographical region |
| GH200 ARM option | Verify that your software and images support ARM before choosing the GH200-based ARM instance |
The GH200 warning matters for more than the operating system. Native dependencies, prebuilt wheels, orchestration agents and custom extensions may not be available for ARM in the same way they are for x86. Confirm architecture support before moving a production image to that shape.

When Lambda is the better choice
- Your training code assumes a normal Linux host and benefits from SSH-like administration.
- You need a known multi-GPU topology rather than independent serverless workers.
- A job runs for many hours or days and should keep its environment, caches and processes alive.
- You want to install system software or monitoring agents at the VM level.
- You can plan around region-specific capacity and are willing to manage VM lifecycle.
Lambda trade-offs
VM flexibility means more responsibility. You must select capacity, keep the instance patched, monitor utilization and stop it when finished. Unlike the published Modal rates, no single Lambda hourly price is published across its families; cost depends on the selected instance and current regional availability. Treat any price shown in a purchase screen as the relevant current figure for that shape, not as a universal Lambda rate.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Compare the three clouds by the decision that matters
Scaling behavior
Modal and RunPod Serverless can add workers as demand changes. That is useful for unpredictable inference traffic and embarrassingly parallel batch work. Lambda requires you to select and manage VM capacity. For a steady training run, that control can be an advantage; for an API with sharp peaks, it can leave capacity idle or require your own scheduler.
Operational control
RunPod Pods and Lambda VMs expose more of the environment: image, storage, host processes and runtime details. Modal deliberately hides most infrastructure so a developer can express the desired container and GPU in code. Pick the level of control your debugging, compliance and deployment process actually needs rather than assuming more control is automatically better.
Billing and total cost
Modal publishes per-second GPU task rates. RunPod advertises per-second billing with no egress fees or minimums on its Cloud GPU product. Lambda’s bill is tied to the chosen VM shape and region. A fair comparison includes all of the following:
Recommended Free Tools
- GPU time doing useful work.
- Cold-start or provisioning time that is billable under the provider’s terms.
- Idle time on a persistent Pod or VM.
- Storage, snapshots and attached services.
- Platform charges, such as Modal’s $250 monthly Team fee.
- Data-transfer charges or exclusions that may differ by product and change over time.
For orientation, 10 hours of uninterrupted use at Modal’s published rates would be about $39.50 on an H100 SXM5, $25 on an A100 80 GB or $5.90 on a T4, before any plan charges or other services. These are simple rate multiplications, not a benchmark or a quotation for a future bill.
Best Value
Capacity and geography
RunPod advertises 31 regions, while Lambda instances are tied to individual regions. Modal says it pools capacity across major clouds. None of those descriptions removes the need to check live capacity: a nominally suitable GPU may be unavailable, delayed or offered at different terms in the region you need. For latency-sensitive inference, place workers close to users or data; for training, prioritize the GPU shape and interconnect your job requires.
Match common AI workloads to a provider
| Workload | Most natural starting point | Why | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bursty model API | Modal or RunPod Serverless | Automatic worker scaling and usage-based execution | Cold-start behavior, concurrency, request timeouts and current GPU capacity |
| Large parallel batch | Modal | Code-defined jobs and massively parallel execution | Per-task limits, input/output transfer and aggregate concurrency |
| Interactive fine-tuning experiment | RunPod Pod | Persistent environment with direct container, storage and GPU control | Disk durability, shutdown policy and idle cost |
| Long training run on a fixed machine | Lambda VM or RunPod Pod | Persistent host and predictable runtime | GPU memory, interconnect, region capacity and checkpoint strategy |
| Explicit multi-GPU training | Lambda Labs | Predefined one-, two-, four- and eight-GPU VM shapes | Exact family, topology, architecture and available region |
| Prototype that may become an API | RunPod | Move from a Pod to Serverless workers within one platform | Worker image parity, autoscaling behavior and endpoint limits |
| Team that wants minimal infrastructure work | Modal | Hosted execution with containers and GPUs declared in code | Framework compatibility and any required plan-level features |
A practical selection process
- Describe the workload’s time pattern. Record whether requests are sporadic, steady, seasonal or one-time. Bursty traffic favors serverless; continuous utilization favors a persistent Pod or VM.
- Define the required control boundary. List whether you need host access, custom system packages, persistent disks, a particular container runtime or only a reproducible application image. If host access is mandatory, start with RunPod Pods or Lambda.
- Specify the GPU, memory and topology. A model that fits a T4 is a different economic problem from one that requires an H100 or multiple GPUs. Lambda’s predefined shapes are useful when topology is explicit; Modal and RunPod let you select GPU specifications according to their available catalog.
- Check architecture and region. Confirm capacity where data and users are located. For Lambda’s GH200-based ARM option, verify every native dependency and image before deployment.
- Estimate utilization, not just the hourly rate. Multiply the published or quoted GPU rate by useful runtime, then add idle time, storage, platform fees and transfer costs. Recalculate for your expected request pattern.
- Run a representative pilot. Measure startup time, tokens or samples per second, memory headroom, concurrency and failure recovery with your model. No independent benchmark results are provided, so provider marketing claims should not substitute for a workload-specific test.
- Set lifecycle safeguards. Add shutdown rules for Pods and VMs, checkpoints for training, request limits for endpoints and alerts for unexpected spend. A technically fast GPU can still be the wrong choice if it remains idle or loses state during a restart.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Choosing from the GPU price alone
A lower per-second figure can lose its advantage if a persistent machine spends most of its time idle, if the required GPU is unavailable in your region or if storage and platform charges dominate. Compare the cost of completing the actual job, including setup and teardown.
Using a Pod for traffic that is mostly idle
Pods are convenient for development, but an always-on Pod charges while it waits. Move a bursty production API to Serverless workers or another autoscaling model, and retain the Pod for debugging and controlled experiments.
Using serverless for a stateful process
Serverless workers are a poor fit when correctness depends on an in-memory session, a local queue or a background process that must survive between requests. Externalize state or use a persistent environment.
Ignoring architecture
An ARM-based instance can fail before model code runs if a compiled dependency or container image supports only x86. Treat architecture verification as a prerequisite, especially for the GH200-based ARM option.
Assuming advertised capacity is permanent
GPU inventory, regions, prices and plan limits change. Confirm the specific GPU, region and terms immediately before a production purchase and keep a fallback shape or provider for time-sensitive jobs.
Final recommendation
Start with Modal when your priority is serverless execution, automatic scaling and code-defined infrastructure. Start with RunPod when you need to inspect and control the machine, want a persistent Pod, or want to move between Pods and Serverless endpoints. Start with Lambda Labs when your workload is naturally a Linux VM—particularly a long training run or an explicitly sized multi-GPU job.
