Casting, screen mirroring, and offline downloads work differently across services, phones, and TVs; there is no single fix that applies to every app.
How do you set up mobile streaming or cast to a TV?
- Install or update the streaming service’s official app, then sign in.
- Check whether the TV has the service’s own app. If it does, playing directly on the TV may be simpler than casting from a phone.
- If you need to cast, confirm that both the app and the receiving TV or streaming device support the same casting method.
- Turn on the TV or receiver and connect your phone and receiver to the same Wi-Fi network when the service’s casting instructions require it. Google Cast and Disney+ both direct users to check the shared network.
- Open the service app and use its cast control if available. Casting sends playback to a receiver; screen mirroring duplicates the phone’s display and is a separate feature that a service may not support.
For example, Disney+ documents Chromecast and AirPlay options for supported mobile devices. Netflix documents casting, but says AirPlay is not supported on iPhone or iPad. Check the service’s current instructions for your country, device, and app version before buying extra hardware.
Why can’t your phone find the TV or streaming device?
- Check compatibility: The app, phone operating system, and receiver all need to support the chosen casting route. Netflix’s cast-icon guidance specifies iOS or iPadOS 16 or later for iPhone and iPad casting, and Android 9 or later for Android casting. Those are Netflix requirements, not universal minimums for other services.
- Check power and Wi-Fi: Make sure the receiver is on and, when required, the phone and receiver are on the same Wi-Fi network. A phone on cellular data while the TV is on Wi-Fi may not discover it.
- Check local-network access on iPhone or iPad: Review the app’s local-network permission in the device settings if the app needs it to find nearby receivers.
- Try the app’s own cast control: A missing cast icon can indicate app, OS, permission, or network incompatibility; it does not by itself mean the phone is broken. A system-wide mirror is not a guaranteed substitute.
- Update both sides: Check for updates to the streaming app and the phone or tablet’s operating system. Also check receiver software where the manufacturer provides updates.
If a Netflix app reset is suggested as a later troubleshooting step, note that Netflix says resetting deletes saved downloads and signs you out. Try the reversible checks above first.
Why does streaming buffer or say there is no connection?
Netflix identifies a weak or unstable internet connection and an out-of-date device as possible causes of slow loading or buffering. It also warns that cellular, mobile-hotspot, and satellite connections may be too slow for playback. Disney+ notes that a no-internet error can appear when a device is not connected to Wi-Fi or cellular data.

- Check that the phone has an active connection and that other sites or apps can load.
- If you are on cellular data or a hotspot, try a more reliable Wi-Fi connection if available.
- Update the streaming app and device software, then try playback again.
- If the problem continues across apps or devices on the same connection, contact your internet provider; the fault may be with the connection rather than the streaming app.
There is no single minimum connection speed established here for every service, video quality, and device, so avoid treating one speed figure as a universal requirement.
Can you download shows to watch offline?
Sometimes. Downloads depend on the service, plan, device, app, and title. Disney+ says subscribers with eligible plans can download supported content in its mobile app on supported devices for viewing without an internet connection. Check the title’s download option and your plan’s current rules before relying on offline playback, especially before travel.

Does Netflix work with AirPlay or screen mirroring?
Netflix says AirPlay is not supported on iPhone or iPad. It treats casting, wired adapters, and wireless mirroring as separate playback routes; support for one does not mean the others will work. Disney+ documents Chromecast and AirPlay for supported mobile devices. The right method therefore depends on the service and receiving device, not just the phone.
Should you update the app or phone?
Yes, checking for updates is a sensible step when playback or casting fails. The exact menus and minimum operating-system requirements vary by app and device. Use the app store’s update option for the streaming app, and the phone or tablet’s software-update settings for the operating system; consult the service’s device-specific help if the app remains incompatible. Hulu and Netflix publish separate, service-specific update and compatibility guidance.

When is extra hardware necessary?
Consider a receiver such as a Chromecast only if your TV lacks the streaming service’s app and cannot receive the casting method your app supports. First confirm that the particular TV, receiver, app, and phone combination is compatible. A new phone, router, or paid network-optimizer app is not the default fix for a missing cast icon or buffering; first work through app, OS, permission, and connection checks.
