Termius is the easiest cross-platform starting point among the apps covered here: official listings are available for iPhone and Android and describe SSH, SFTP, and mobile-friendly terminal controls. For an Android-only remote shell, consider ConnectBot. Mobile SSH documents both platforms, but its current onboarding describes beta distribution, so check availability before choosing it. These are recommendations based on official feature descriptions, not hands-on testing or a ranking of every app.
Which mobile SSH app should you start with?
Choose based on your phone’s operating system and the work you actually do from it. Termius is the most direct choice if you want one option documented for both iPhone and Android, plus SFTP and session conveniences. ConnectBot is a focused Android SSH client. Mobile SSH may suit people interested in its documented capabilities on either platform, provided its test or beta channel is accessible to them.

What matters when choosing a phone terminal?
Confirm the platform and release channel
Check that the app is available for your exact device and that you can install it through the channel you are comfortable using. This is especially important for Mobile SSH: its documentation describes iOS TestFlight beta access and an Android closed test, rather than a conventional generally available store release.
Consider how you will enter commands
Phone keyboards often hide or make awkward the keys used in shell work. Termius documents a virtual keyboard with special terminal keys on both platforms. Its iOS listing also describes Bluetooth keyboard support, while ConnectBot describes keeping special keys visible. These are listed features, not independent usability assessments.

A physical keyboard is optional. If you frequently run longer sessions, a compact Bluetooth keyboard may make typing easier; check that it works with your device and is portable enough to carry. Termius also documents its own on-screen special-key keyboard, so you do not need an accessory just to get terminal keys.

Check file transfers and session management
If you need to move files as well as run commands, Termius listings describe SFTP, and ConnectBot describes file transfers to and from the phone. For managing several connections, Termius documents multi-tab sessions; its iOS listing also describes split view. Match those workflows to your actual tasks rather than assuming every listed feature is included in every plan.

Verify authentication and network requirements
Before installing, make a short checklist of what your servers require: password or key authentication, a particular key type, a jump host or proxy, and any policy imposed by your organization. Termius’s listings mention ECDSA/Ed25519 keys and FIDO2 support on iOS, plus FIDO2 and Pro proxy/jump-server features on Android. Mobile SSH documentation lists key and password authentication and jump hosts. Confirm the specific combination you need against the current app documentation and your server configuration.

Termius’s store listings describe a Starter plan with SSH, Mosh, Telnet, port forwarding, and SFTP, while its iOS listing describes Pro features such as an encrypted cloud vault and proxy and jump servers. The Android listing also describes Pro capabilities. Store descriptions and plan limits can change, and the available sources do not establish a directly comparable price or privacy picture across the broader mobile SSH market.
