The most reliable way to make a mobile game run smoother is to use the performance features your phone actually supports, match the setting to the game and the session, and treat heat and battery life as limits you manage rather than problems a single switch will solve. No one toggle boosts every phone and every game. Below, each lever is explained with its requirements, its trade-off, and what it does not guarantee.
Start by checking what your phone and game support
Most mobile performance advice fails at this step. Built-in game-focused modes are not universal. Their availability depends on the platform, the operating system version, the device model, and in some cases the individual game. Check these four things before expecting any effect:

- Your operating system version (for example, iOS or iPadOS version, or the Android build your manufacturer ships).
- Whether the device model has the feature at all. Manufacturers often limit it to certain models.
- Whether the specific game is recognized by the feature. On iPhone and iPad, Apple’s Game Mode applies only to supported games.
- Whether your region or carrier build exposes the same menu. Settings can differ between markets.
Game Mode on iPhone and iPad
Apple’s support documentation describes Game Mode as available on iPhone and iPad running iOS 18 or iPadOS 18 or later, and only with a supported game. When it is active, Apple says the game receives priority access to CPU and GPU resources and background-task activity is reduced. Apple also states that Game Mode doubles the Bluetooth sampling rate, which is intended to reduce input and audio latency for wireless accessories such as game controllers and AirPods.
Those are Apple’s stated behaviors, not guarantees. How much a reader notices depends on the game, the accessory, and how many other apps are running. If your iPhone is on iOS 17 or earlier, or the game you play is not supported, you will not see this mode at all, and the advice in the sections below applies instead.

Android: heat and performance profiles
Android’s own developer documentation on power efficiency explains the mechanism behind most performance drops in long sessions: “High utilization of the device’s CPU and GPU generates heat.” When a phone gets hot, it can reduce the speed of those components to protect itself. The effect is that a game that runs well for the first few minutes can become choppy or drop frames later, and the battery drains faster while it does.
Android devices may offer a game performance profile that expresses a preference between higher performance and longer battery life. Android’s documentation describes this as a preference, not a fixed result. Menu names, placement, and behavior differ between manufacturers and between Android versions, so a path that works on one phone may not exist on another. Do not assume that the setting in a friend’s phone or a review screenshot is in yours.

Samsung Galaxy with One UI 7
Samsung’s support guidance, updated March 19, 2026, describes two relevant controls on One UI 7 devices. The first is choosing a performance optimization option within Game Booster. The second is configuring certain games individually, with options for frame rate (FPS), screen resolution, and frame booster. Samsung states that these options vary by software version, device model, and region, so treat any menu path as specific to your build and check Samsung’s current support page for your model.
Per-game settings are the most useful part of this. Setting a demanding game to a lower frame rate or resolution can reduce the load on the processor and graphics chip, which lowers heat and may keep performance steadier over a long session. This is a practical inference from how mobile hardware handles heat, not a measured result for any particular title, so test it on the game you actually play.

Battery saver: what Low Power Mode trades away
Apple’s battery guidance says Low Power Mode reduces display brightness, optimizes device performance, and minimizes system animations. It is a way to extend how long your phone lasts. It is not a way to play faster. Because it deliberately limits performance, it is a poor choice for a competitive or visually demanding session, and a reasonable choice for a casual session when you need the battery to last.
| Setting or condition | What it does | Main trade-off | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Game Mode (iOS 18 or iPadOS 18+, supported game) | Gives the game priority access to CPU and GPU; reduces background-task use; doubles Bluetooth sampling rate (Apple’s stated behavior) | Only works with supported games; benefits are not guaranteed for every game or accessory | Long or demanding sessions with a wireless controller |
| Low Power Mode (Apple) | Reduces display brightness, optimizes performance, minimizes system animations (Apple’s battery guidance) | Lower performance and dimmer screen | Extending battery life during casual play |
| Android performance profile (where offered) | Expresses a preference between performance and battery life | Availability and behavior vary by manufacturer and device | Choosing per session on a supported phone |
| Samsung Game Booster optimization and per-game FPS, resolution, or frame booster (One UI 7, per Samsung’s March 19, 2026 guidance) | Adjusts performance optimization and per-game visual load | Options vary by software version, model, and region; lower visual settings reduce image quality | Stabilizing a specific game on a supported Galaxy device |
Reduce heat during play
Because heat is the main reason sustained performance falls, the most useful steps are the ones that reduce the load that generates it. Work through them in this order:

It introduces powerful new features such as gyro settings, stick curve adjustments, and button-to-mouse mapping, giving you deeper customization and more control than ever before.
- Close background apps that you do not need during the session, and avoid running video, navigation, or screen recording alongside the game.
- Enable the supported game mode or performance profile for your device, if one is available, and confirm it is active for the game you are playing.
- In the game’s own settings, lower the frame rate or graphics quality if the game offers those options. Lower visual workload is a sensible first step against heat and unstable frame rates, though no universal setting exists for any one title.
- Avoid charging the phone while playing a demanding game, since charging adds heat on top of the processing load.
- Take a break when the phone is noticeably warm. Continuing to play while the device throttles usually produces stutter rather than a steady frame rate.
Accessory cooling products are a separate question. Heat is well documented, but this article does not establish that any particular phone cooler improves sustained performance on a given device, so it should not be treated as a fix.
Controllers: comfort and input, not raw speed
A game controller is an input and comfort choice. It does not make the phone render faster. Whether it is worth buying depends on whether the games you play support gamepads, and on how you prefer to hold a device. Compare these factors before choosing a model:
Best Value
- Officially licensed by Xbox. Bluetooth connection. Supports Xbox Cloud Gaming.
- Officially supported by Apple. Compatible with Apple and Android devices. Stretchable design fits most phones (100–170mm in length).
- Hall Effect Joysticks and Triggers - Upgraded. Robust and long-lasting. Offering higher precision and sensitivity.
- Tactile bumpers and D-pad, 2 Pro back paddle buttons, Xbox button, and wear-resistant metal joystick rings for more ways to play.
- Support 8BitDo Ultimate Software V2 on mobile.
- Device and OS compatibility: confirm the controller works with your phone model and operating system version.
- Game support: check whether your specific games recognize a gamepad. Many do not.
- Connection type: wireless controllers benefit from Apple’s Bluetooth sampling change on supported iPhone and iPad setups; wired connections avoid wireless latency entirely but add cable clutter.
- Ergonomics: button layout, grip size, and whether the phone clamps securely matter more than specifications for long sessions.
- Passthrough charging: some clip-on designs let you charge the phone through the controller, which is useful for long sessions but adds heat and bulk.
Verify current product specifications and compatibility lists before buying. Controller support and features change with firmware and game updates.
What this article does not establish
- No universal network adjustment reliably reduces latency across all routers, carriers, and game servers. Network changes are specific to your setup.
- No independent benchmark establishes specific frame-rate gains, temperature thresholds, or battery-hour figures for these features. The figures above come from the vendors’ own descriptions and should be read as stated behavior.
- No single phone cooler or controller model has been shown here to be the best choice for a given device.
With those limits in mind, start with the supported feature for your phone, adjust the game itself before changing system settings, and match the profile to whether you are playing for battery life or for peak responsiveness.
