Fraud affecting mobile games is not one scam with one fix. It spans attacks on game accounts and players, manipulation of in-game advertising, fake installs, and disputes over what counts as a genuine ad interaction. Current evidence shows meaningful risks and several defenses, but it does not prove that defenses have—or have not—kept pace across the whole ecosystem. The most useful conclusion is narrower: each part of the chain needs its own controls and its own way to verify results.
Mobile gaming fraud covers two connected—but distinct—problems
Fraud directed at a game service or its players can involve account creation, account abuse, or scams and solicitation. Ad fraud, by contrast, manipulates advertising delivery, clicks, installs, attribution, or the measurement of engagement. The two can intersect—for example, automated or compromised activity can affect both game accounts and advertising—but a statistic about one should not be treated as evidence about the other.

That distinction matters because the strongest recent sector-level figures are not mobile-game-only measures, while the available mobile ad benchmark covers apps generally rather than games in particular.

Video gaming is a high-risk category, not a mobile-only statistic
TransUnion’s 2025 report says video gaming—which includes online and mobile games—had the highest suspected digital fraud attempt rate among the sectors it analyzed in H1 2025: 13.5%. The report also says suspected fraud volume in the category was 3% higher than in H1 2024. Neither figure isolates mobile games, and a suspected attempt rate is not the share of all players who were successfully defrauded.

Account creation is one pressure point in the same category: TransUnion reports a 14.8% suspected digital fraud rate for video gaming account creation in H1 2025. It also identifies scammer or solicitation as the most reported fraud type among its video gaming customers. These findings indicate risks around gaming services and customers, but they do not establish how much of the activity occurred in mobile games or identify a single cause.
The mobile in-app ad benchmark is broad and dated
Pixalate estimated that invalid traffic (IVT) accounted for 23% of global open-programmatic mobile in-app advertising in Q1 2024, and estimated $1.4 billion in associated invalid-traffic and ad-fraud spend. Its analysis used 5.1 million active mobile apps and more than 50 billion impressions. These are Pixalate’s proprietary estimates for mobile in-app advertising overall—not a current, independently established rate for gaming apps.

How mobile game ad fraud can work
Google Play defines ad fraud as interactions intended to trick an ad network into believing traffic reflects authentic user interest. Its policy says, “Ad fraud is strictly prohibited.” The examples below are prohibited behaviors identified by Google Play; they are not an exhaustive list of every possible attack.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Invisible or misrepresented ads: ads may be rendered where users cannot see them, or an app may misrepresent its identity or device type.
- Automatic or bot-generated clicks: interactions can be generated without a person intentionally choosing an ad.
- Fake install-attribution clicks: fabricated clicks can make an install appear to have come from an ad that did not genuinely prompt it.
- Out-of-app ads: ads displayed outside the app interface can mislead users and distort how an ad was delivered.
These examples show why “fake installs” are only one part of the problem. An install can be counted or attributed incorrectly even when a game itself appears to install and run normally.

Why the measurement layer is another risk
Fraud detection often depends on deciding whether an impression, click, install, or engagement was genuine. A September 2026 arXiv preprint by Wu and colleagues examines “semi-drive-by splash ads,” where incidental or indirect device or user activity may be interpreted as a billable interaction by ad SDKs or networks. The authors report observations across thousands of Android apps and say that, after working with a large Chinese advertiser, about 4 million yuan was repaid.
This is preliminary research, not an industry-wide prevalence estimate or an established finding that all splash ads are fraudulent. Its significance is the measurement question it raises: a system can produce a questionable billable event even when the key issue is how an interaction was classified, rather than who generated a conventional click.

What current defenses can do—and where their evidence stops
Policy and app-safety controls set important rules
Google Play’s ad-fraud policy gives developers practical guardrails: render ads visibly in the app, make clicks follow genuine intentional user interaction, represent the app and inventory accurately, and ensure traffic and install attribution reflect authentic interest. Google also describes a broader ecosystem-safety approach involving developer tools, app review, Play Protect scanning, and SDK safety information. These are platform policies and safety measures; they do not quantify how much mobile-game fraud remains.
Integrity checks can flag some risk signals
Google says Play Integrity API can help an app identify tampering and potentially compromised environments, including for fraud and bot prevention. Google reported that apps using Play Integrity features saw 80% lower usage from unverified and untrusted sources on average, in a 2025 report describing 2024 results. That is a Google-reported average, not proof that the API caused the difference, a guarantee for any individual game, or an 80% reduction in fraud. An integrity signal can inform a decision; it does not by itself establish whether a player or an ad event is legitimate.

No single control covers every layer
App integrity checks address a different surface from ad rendering, click behavior, or install attribution. The available evidence does not compare complete anti-fraud stacks or establish that any one control prevents fraud. Developers and advertisers therefore need to match checks to the event they are trying to validate, rather than treating an app-security feature as a substitute for ad measurement or account-abuse controls.
A practical way for developers and advertisers to assess defenses
When evaluating an internal control or a mobile measurement and ad-fraud detection service, start with the specific failure you need to catch. Ask for evidence that fits the relevant platform and traffic, not just a broad claim that a product “stops fraud.”
- Define the threat surface. Separate account creation and account abuse from app tampering, bots, ad impressions and clicks, install attribution, and how ad networks classify engagement.
- Check the scope. Establish whether a claim covers Android, iOS, or both; a particular game or apps generally; and mobile-only activity or the wider online and video gaming category.
- Inspect the evidence behind the claim. Distinguish platform policy or attestation, a vendor’s own benchmark, advertiser or publisher telemetry, and independent measurement. Ask for the measurement window, geography, sample, and definition of “fraud” or “invalid traffic.”
- Review implementation and inventory identity. Confirm that ads appear in the expected app context, that the represented app and device information are accurate, and that clicks require intentional user interaction.
- Reconcile attribution and engagement. Compare ad-network reports with the publisher’s install and engagement records; investigate unexplained discrepancies and unusual patterns instead of accepting every attributed event at face value.
- Review SDKs and integrity signals. Understand which SDKs handle ads or measurement, what data and events they collect, and how integrity results affect decisions. Treat a signal as one input, not a verdict.
Before comparing providers, ask each to document which of these surfaces it covers and what evidence supports its performance claims. The cited benchmarks do not establish a head-to-head ranking of commercial products.

What remains unproven
The evidence supports concern about fraud in the broader video gaming category and invalid traffic in mobile in-app advertising. It does not provide an independent, mobile-games-only prevalence estimate, a current game-specific ad-fraud rate, or a comparative measurement proving that defenses lag every evolving tactic. The claim that defenses have not kept up is therefore a reasonable question for developers and advertisers to test—not a settled result established by these figures.
