Mobile compatibility testing checks whether an app works across the devices, operating systems, screen sizes, hardware, locales, and network conditions it is meant to support. The most practical approach is a risk-based test matrix: use simulators for fast, repeatable checks, then verify release-critical flows on real devices—including under relevant connectivity problems.
There is no universal device list that guarantees coverage. Start with the app’s actual support commitments and audience, then prioritize combinations that could break its most important features.

What mobile compatibility testing covers
Compatibility is more than whether an app launches on the latest operating system. A useful test plan accounts for the combinations of platform, OS version, device class, screen dimensions, orientation, hardware, locale, and connectivity that affect the app’s behavior.
- Platform and OS: Each supported mobile platform and the OS versions your support policy covers.
- Device and display: Relevant phone, tablet, or foldable classes, screen sizes, and portrait or landscape layouts.
- Hardware: Features the app depends on, such as a camera, GPS, biometric sensor, or NFC, as well as behavior when optional hardware is absent.
- Locale and region: Settings that can affect language, formatting, or region-specific behavior.
- Network: Normal service and the slower, higher-latency, lossy, or interrupted connections the app needs to handle.
These dimensions are combinatorial: testing every possible combination may be impractical. The goal is to select representative combinations based on product risk, rather than to maximize the number of devices tested.

How to build a risk-based test matrix
1. Define the supported surface
Write down the platforms and OS versions the app supports, the device categories it is designed for, and the hardware required by its core features. Include any compatibility modes that matter. For Apple apps, do not assume that omitting a device destination in Xcode automatically prevents the app from being available on every other compatible Apple device; Apple’s compatibility guidance advises teams to test where the app could actually be used.
2. Identify high-risk combinations
Use your own audience and usage data, platform support policy, critical customer journeys, and hardware dependencies to decide what to test first. Prioritize combinations where a failure would block a key task or where the interface or feature depends heavily on a particular device capability.
Firebase Test Lab’s matrix controls include device, OS version, locale, and screen orientation. That is a useful model for planning dimensions, but a test matrix should also account for app-specific hardware and network behavior.

3. Pick representative cases
Choose a manageable set of combinations that covers the app’s supported surface and its highest-risk paths. For example, a camera-based app should exercise its capture flow on devices with the required camera capability and check the behavior when permission is denied. A location-dependent app should cover its location flow and the relevant permission or hardware failure state. These are examples of risk-driven coverage, not a universal device prescription.
Use current device catalogs when selecting cloud-lab runs. Firebase Test Lab’s catalog and capacity indicators can change; Google notes that capacity does not show real-time queue length or current device state, so it cannot promise immediate execution.
Which testing environment should you use?
Different environments answer different questions. Simulators are efficient for basic checks; physical devices expose behavior tied to actual hardware and real conditions; hosted device labs can provide access to a broader device pool without requiring a team to buy and maintain every handset.

| Environment | Best suited to | What the documented guidance supports | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Simulator | Fast, repeatable basic checks and early coverage | Apple recommends Xcode simulators for basic functionality checks. | It does not replace validation on real devices. |
| Owned real devices | Release-critical flows and hardware-dependent behavior | Apple recommends testing on real devices and under real-world network conditions. | A small in-house collection cannot represent every supported combination. |
| Firebase Test Lab | Hosted device testing, test matrices, and CI workflows | Its overview describes hosted Android and iOS devices, Android instrumentation and Robo tests, plus XCTest and Game Loop workflows. | It is not intended for backend load testing; catalog and capacity conditions can change. |
| BrowserStack App Live | Interactive remote testing and debugging | Its documentation describes real Android and iOS devices, local access to internal development or staging services, simultaneous multi-device sessions, and native device functions. | Device availability and service configuration should be checked for the required workflow. |
| AWS Device Farm | Managed test hosts connected to iOS devices | Its developer guide describes managed macOS hosts and lists XCTestUI and Appium among test platforms. | Host choice can matter for some iOS versions; confirm current host requirements and device support. |
Compare hosted options against the work you need to do, not just the size of a device catalog. Relevant criteria include current device and OS availability, manual versus automated access, matrix controls, network simulation, native features, CI integration, local app access, stability, queue time, host constraints, and budget. How to use simulators, real devices, and hosted labs together
Use simulators early
Run basic functionality checks and broad early coverage in simulators. They make repeatable checks convenient, but a successful simulator run alone does not establish that the app works on physical hardware or in real-world conditions.
Verify critical journeys on physical hardware
Exercise the release-critical flows on real devices, especially where the app depends on device-specific behavior, hardware, or connectivity. Apple says App Review evaluates apps installed on real devices and connected to networks under real-world conditions. For Apple apps, the company recommends checking compatibility modes before submission.

Use a hosted lab when broader access is needed
A hosted device lab can help when a team cannot own or maintain a large device inventory. Firebase Test Lab supports test matrices and CI integration, while BrowserStack App Live is oriented toward interactive testing and debugging. AWS Device Farm describes managed test hosts for iOS testing. Check the current catalogs, host requirements, and configuration details for the exact coverage you need.
For Apple beta testing, TestFlight lets developers invite up to 100 internal testers and up to 10,000 external testers — Apple Developer, accessed 2026. Apple’s documentation also says the first build added to an external group is submitted for App Review. These are platform limits and process details, not device-coverage recommendations; verify Apple’s current rules before planning a release.

Include connectivity cases that reflect how the app is expected to work. Apple’s guidance calls for testing on real devices under real-world network conditions. BrowserStack documents preset 2G, 3G, and 4G simulation profiles and custom bandwidth, latency, and packet-loss settings. These are testing capabilities, not universal service-level thresholds or a claim that every app needs the same network profiles.
Best Value
- Detailed image quality comparable to professional thermal imagers
- Full temperature range analysis
- Real-time image sharing, communication without barriers
- Small and portable, it takes a second to get started
- Check core journeys on an ordinary connection.
- Test slower bandwidth, higher latency, and packet loss when those conditions could affect the app’s workflows.
- Interrupt or degrade connectivity during important operations, then check what the user sees and whether the app recovers appropriately.
- Test transitions between connectivity states when the product needs to survive them.
Choose conditions that reflect your product’s requirements; there is no single bandwidth, latency, or packet-loss target established for all mobile apps.
Check adaptive layouts, permissions, and missing hardware
Test whether the interface responds appropriately to supported screen sizes and orientations. For features that rely on hardware, check both the expected capability and graceful behavior when optional hardware is unavailable. Apple recommends interfaces that adapt to screen size and orientation, features that adapt to available hardware, and graceful handling when optional hardware is missing.
For relevant features, also exercise permission denial and recovery paths. For example, confirm that a user can understand the next step if camera or location access is denied, and that the app does not fail unexpectedly if connectivity is lost during a task. Treat these as app-specific test cases rather than assumptions that every app needs the same flows.

- List support commitments: Record platforms, minimum and current supported OS versions, device categories, and required hardware.
- Map critical journeys: Identify the flows that must work for a release and the device, permission, or network conditions each depends on.
- Select representative combinations: Cover relevant device and OS combinations along with screen orientation, locale, hardware presence, and connectivity cases.
- Run quick checks in simulators: Use them for basic, repeatable checks and early feedback.
- Validate high-risk paths on real devices: Use owned devices, external testers, or hosted labs according to the workflow and coverage needed.
- Record failures and recovery: Track the affected combination, the user-visible result, and whether the app recovers as intended.
- Recheck volatile lab details: Confirm current device catalogs, capacity, host requirements, and service configuration before relying on them for release coverage.
A useful matrix is tied to the app’s actual support policy and customer journeys. Do not treat a static device list—or a large number of passing runs—as proof of compatibility beyond the combinations tested.
