Mobile App Testing Basics: A Beginner’s Guide

A practical beginner’s guide to mobile app testing: define user journeys, explore edge cases, choose simulators or devices, automate stable checks, and report defects clearly.

Mobile app testing is a repeatable way to check that important tasks work as intended across the operating systems, devices, network conditions and user needs your app supports. Start by writing down what users need to do and what should happen; explore those journeys manually, record failures precisely, then automate stable checks and rerun them after changes. Testing reduces risk—it does not prove an app is bug-free.

How do I test a mobile app?

Begin with the app’s most important user journeys, not a checklist of every screen. For a typical app, that might include creating an account, signing in, completing its core task, handling an error, and finding data still present after closing and reopening the app.

  1. Define the supported range. List the platforms and operating-system versions you intend to support, along with relevant device types and screen sizes. Choose representative configurations according to user risk and hardware needs; you do not have to test every possible model and OS combination.
  2. Write expected outcomes. For each journey, note preconditions, actions, the expected result, and a few important variations. Include invalid input, denied permissions, interruptions, loss of connectivity, and recovery where they matter.
  3. Explore manually. Run the journeys on a simulator or emulator, and on a physical device when available. Try variations such as different screen sizes, languages, permissions, network states, and backgrounding and resuming the app.
  4. Record defects so they can be reproduced. Capture the build or app version, device model, OS version and network state, as well as the steps, expected behavior and actual behavior. Include a screenshot or screen recording when it makes the failure clearer.
  5. Automate stable, repeated checks. Cover isolated logic with unit tests, important component boundaries with integration tests, and a smaller number of high-value end-to-end journeys with UI automation.
  6. Retest fixes and regressions. Reproduce a reported issue in its recorded environment, verify the fix, then rerun the checks most likely to catch related breakage. State what you tested and what remains uncovered.

Android’s testing fundamentals describe both manual exploration and automated testing as parts of testing an app. Android Developers: testing fundamentals.

What should I test in an Android or iOS app?

Choose test cases from the tasks users rely on and the ways those tasks can fail. A useful journey description is concrete: “Given I am signed in, when I submit a valid expense, then it appears in my history after I reopen the app.” Add cases for invalid amounts, a denied camera or location permission if relevant, a connection drop during submission, and recovery after the app resumes.

  • Core behavior: Check that key actions produce the expected result and that data persists when it should.
  • Errors and edge cases: Try empty, malformed or out-of-range input, unavailable services, interrupted requests, and retry or recovery paths.
  • Permissions and interruptions: Check both granted and denied permissions. Where relevant, test incoming calls or notifications, app switching, background and resume, and changes in connectivity.
  • Platform and configuration variation: Exercise supported OS versions, screen sizes, language settings and network conditions that could change the experience.
  • Accessibility: Complete real tasks with the assistive technologies and settings relevant to the platform; visual inspection alone is not enough.

Apple recommends working through the app’s main tasks using assistive technologies such as VoiceOver, Voice Control and Switch Control. Some checks, including VoiceOver, require a physical device. Apple: performing accessibility testing.

Can I test an app without a real phone?

Yes. Android Studio’s Android Virtual Device (AVD) and Xcode simulators let you run apps in virtual device configurations, making them useful for early checks and coverage across configurations. They cannot reproduce every hardware feature or the performance of a physical device. Apple advises building and running an app on a simulated or physical device, and notes that simulators do not replicate physical-device performance or all device features. Apple: running on simulated or physical devices.

Choice Useful for Limits to keep in mind
Android AVD or Xcode simulator Convenient checks across SDK, OS and device configurations; repeatable runs; broad early exploration. Android AVD can emulate some hardware, such as GPS or SMS. Does not reproduce all physical-device behavior or performance. Validate features that depend on actual hardware on a physical device.
Physical device More realistic checks of hardware-dependent behavior and release confidence on representative devices. It is less convenient than a virtual device for rapidly changing OS or device configurations. You do not need to acquire every supported model to begin testing.

Android’s security-testing guidance likewise describes Android Studio, Android SDK platform tools and AVD as basic tools, while noting that a real device gives a more realistic environment and emulators make it easier to switch SDK versions or create multiple devices. OWASP: Android security testing environment.

How do I automate mobile app testing?

Automate checks that are important, repeat often, and have clear expected results. Keep exploratory testing manual: it is better suited to discovering confusing interactions and unexpected behavior. Automation makes selected checks more consistent after code changes, but a passing suite only describes the cases it covers.

Use a layered test mix

  • Unit tests: Verify isolated logic quickly, such as validation rules, calculations or transformations.
  • Integration tests: Check boundaries between important components, such as an app screen and its data layer or a client and a service.
  • UI tests: Automate a small set of common, high-value user journeys through the interface. Prefer stable flows and protect known regressions rather than automating every possible interaction.

Apple’s Xcode testing guidance recommends this kind of mix: many fast isolated unit tests, fewer integration tests and UI tests for common use cases. Xcode 16 and later includes Swift Testing for unit tests; XCTest remains available for UI automation with XCUIAutomation. Apple: testing in Xcode.

Keep automated checks maintainable

  • Make each test’s starting state and expected result explicit.
  • Use test data that can be reset or recreated so results do not depend on a previous run.
  • Automate checks that protect common tasks or known defects before low-risk cosmetic variations.
  • When a test fails, determine whether the app regressed, the test setup changed, or the test is unstable before changing the assertion.

How should I test accessibility and security?

Accessibility needs task-based checks

Try completing the app’s important tasks with relevant assistive technologies rather than relying on whether a screen looks accessible. Check whether controls can be found and operated, and whether the task remains understandable. Include platform-specific tools and settings in the test plan; some checks require hardware rather than a simulator.

Security is a separate assessment

Functional checks can reveal basic behavior problems, but they do not establish that an app is secure. OWASP’s Mobile Application Security Verification Standard (MASVS) provides mobile security requirements, and its Mobile Application Security Testing Guide (MASTG) describes testing processes, techniques and tests for Android and iOS. OWASP cautions that automated tools alone cannot complete MASVS verification because apps differ. Treat security as a deliberately scoped assessment, with suitable expertise, rather than as a beginner functional checklist or a certification implied by passing app tests. Frequently Asked Questions

Does a passing mobile test suite mean an app has no bugs?

No. A suite only provides evidence about the cases and environments it covers; unexplored paths and configurations can still fail.

Do I need to test every device model and OS version?

No. Select representative configurations from the app’s supported range based on user risk and whether the behavior depends on particular hardware.
