If you want an MMO that does not make a monthly subscription the price of entry, Guild Wars 2 is the clearest fit in the official terms reviewed: its core game is free, expansions are optional purchases, and no monthly fee is required. ArenaNet describes Guild Wars 2 as buy-to-play with no monthly fees, and says its core game can be played for free. Its announcement says, “Guild Wars 2 has the simplest of business models: buy the game and play it as long as you want with no monthly fees.” That is ArenaNet’s description of its model, not an independent assessment. Expansions are paid additions to the game; buying them does not introduce a required monthly subscription. The game also has an in-game gem shop, so “subscription-free” should not be confused with “monetization-free.” ArenaNet says players can obtain items through gold earned in play or by purchasing gems. FINAL FANTASY XIV Online is a better comparison for players who prefer a subscription-funded MMO and accept recurring charges. Square Enix’s product page covers editions and platforms, while its user agreement describes monthly subscription billing. The agreement’s effective date is September 26, 2024; check the current purchase and billing terms for your region and platform before buying.

How to choose without relying on a “no P2W” label
- Want to try an MMO without a required recurring charge? Start with Guild Wars 2’s free core game, then decide whether its paid expansions offer content you want.
- Prefer a subscription-funded game? Consider FINAL FANTASY XIV, but include recurring billing in your budget and confirm the terms for your region and platform.
- Competitive fairness is the deciding factor? Check the current shop and the specific mode you play. Look for paid gear, upgrades, boosts, or other purchases that can alter competitive outcomes; the business model alone cannot answer that question.
