MLB’s 2026 Robot Umpire Challenges: 54% of Calls Overturned

MLB’s 2026 “robot umpire” system did not replace the home-plate umpire: the umpire made each initial ball-or-strike call, and a batter, pitcher or catcher could immediately ask the tracking system to review it. The Associated Press counted 5,686 overturned calls among 10,557 challenges over the season, a 54% overturn rate on challenges—not evidence that 54% of all pitches or umpire calls were wrong.

What the 54% figure means

In its October 2, 2026 season-end report, the Associated Press counted 5,686 successful challenges out of 10,557 total, or 54%. The denominator is challenged calls only. Calls that no one challenged were not part of that calculation, so the figure cannot be read as the error rate for all pitches or all plate-umpire decisions. MLB’s live ABS Challenge Dashboard is another place to view the system’s metrics, but its counts change over time.

The AP also reported an average of 4.35 challenges per game. Challenge frequency and challenge success are different measures: a role, team or inning can have a high overturn rate without having made the most challenges or produced the greatest overall run-value effect.

How MLB’s challenge system works

A person calls the pitch first

The home-plate umpire makes the initial call. Only the batter, pitcher or catcher may immediately signal a challenge; coaches and teammates cannot initiate one or advise the player to do so. MLB adopted the challenge format for all 2026 Spring Training, Championship Season and Postseason games. The league said players preferred it to using the tracking technology to call every pitch automatically.

Teams have a limited number of appeals

Each team starts with two challenges. A team keeps a challenge when the review overturns the call; an unsuccessful challenge uses one. If a game reaches extra innings and a team has no challenges remaining, it receives a fresh one. That limited supply makes the decision immediate and strategic: a player must judge the call and the situation before the next pitch.

Cameras check the pitch against the batter’s zone

MLB said 12 Hawk-Eye cameras track the pitch and compare its location with the batter’s defined strike zone. The zone is a 17-inch-wide rectangle whose top is 53.5% of the measured player’s height and whose bottom is 27%; the pitch location is assessed as the ball passes the middle of home plate. If any part of the ball touches any part of the zone, MLB’s rule treats it as a strike.

The home-plate umpire announces the challenge, and the result is shown on stadium scoreboards and broadcast graphics. MLB’s September 23, 2025 announcement estimated that the review process takes approximately 15 seconds. The system supplies a review of a human call, rather than making every call itself.

Challenger Challenges overturned
Catchers 59%
Batters 49%
Pitchers 40%

The AP also highlighted individual examples with stated minimum-attempt thresholds. William Contreras had 105 successful challenges in 185 attempts. Among catchers with at least 75 challenges, J.T. Realmuto had an 81% success rate and Tyler Stephenson had a 68% rate. Those figures are descriptive results within that qualifying group, not evidence that every catcher—or every player with fewer attempts—would perform similarly.

How challenge use changed during the season

Teams used challenges more often as the season progressed: the AP reported 3.76 per game in March, 4.60 in August and 4.61 in September. The report also found more challenges late in games, even though late challenges were less successful on average.

Game timing Challenge volume reported by AP Success rate
Innings 1–3 Average of 1,005 challenges 61%
Ninth inning 1,366 challenges 40%

The innings 1–3 figure is an average across those innings, while 1,366 is the reported ninth-inning total. These are different volume descriptions, so they should not be treated as a like-for-like inning total comparison. Their success rates are descriptive, not proof that a particular challenge policy caused the difference.

The AP reported that teams used the system less early in the season partly because two failed appeals could leave them without challenges. Managers described the choice as a developing skill. Yankees manager Aaron Boone called it “a new muscle for players to learn,” while Houston manager Joe Espada said the system had affected how lineups approached pitches and how aggressively pitchers attacked the zone. Atlanta manager Walt Weiss offered one approach: “The lower the leverage, the more certainty you have to have.” That is his view of when to spend a challenge, not a proven universal formula.

Team impact and a postseason first

In AP’s account, Cincinnati led teams with a 62% challenge success rate. Baseball Savant run-value calculations reported by the AP put the Reds at a net gain of 16.8 runs from overturned calls; Cleveland’s figure was minus-13.4 runs. These are estimates of run value attributed to overturns, not win totals or a complete measure of team performance.

The system also produced a postseason milestone. In Game 2 of the Phillies’ 2026 National League Wild Card Series, J.T. Realmuto’s successful challenge ended the game—the first game-ending ABS challenge in postseason history, according to the AP. MLB had announced that the challenge format would be used in 2026 postseason games.

Why MLB kept a human umpire in the loop

MLB described the format as a balance between correcting missed calls, keeping the game moving and preserving the umpire’s role. Commissioner Robert D. Manfred Jr. said players’ strong preference for challenges over automated calls on every pitch was a key factor in the league’s decision. That is MLB’s stated rationale; the season’s challenge statistics measure review outcomes, not whether the format is the best possible way to officiate every pitch.
