Usually, yes. Two 8GB modules with different rated speeds can work together if both use a memory generation and form factor your computer supports. When the system accepts both, it typically runs them at the lowest speed it supports across the modules. That outcome isn’t guaranteed on every machine. Some mixed pairs run below their target speed, and on some platforms they can fail to boot.
What actually happens when speeds differ
Intel states that a motherboard with mixed supported memory speeds will downgrade to the lowest frequency among the supported DIMMs. If you pair a DDR4-3200 stick with a DDR4-2666 stick, expect the memory to run at 2666 MT/s or lower, not at 3200.

The faster stick is not damaged by this. You just don’t get the speed you paid for. If you’re buying a second stick to match one you already own, buying a faster one gains you nothing unless you replace both.
Why “it should work” isn’t a promise
Intel’s guidance for its 600-series boards with 12th-generation Core processors warns that DIMMs with different part numbers may reduce speed or prevent booting. That warning applies to that documented platform. It still shows that mixing is something the manufacturer treats as a risk, not a guarantee.

The evidence doesn’t give a failure rate for mixed-speed pairs, so nobody can honestly say how often problems occur. Treat mixing as “likely to work, worth verifying.”
Rated speed versus the speed your system uses
The number on the label is what the module is rated for. The speed your PC uses is decided at startup. According to Intel, the system reads each module’s SPD data during POST. The final operating frequency then depends on:

An XMP or EXPO speed is therefore conditional. It needs a compatible CPU and board, the right settings, and successful memory training. Don’t assume a higher-rated stick will run at its label speed next to a slower one.

Memory generation
Crucial explains that DDR generations are physically different, and that DDR4 and DDR5 can’t be installed in each other’s slots. Confirm whether your system takes DDR3, DDR4 or DDR5 before you compare speeds. Two 8GB sticks of different generations can’t be combined.

Form factor
Desktop modules (UDIMMs) and laptop modules (SO-DIMMs) are different products. 8GB capacity says nothing about which one you have. Use your system documentation or a compatibility lookup rather than guessing.
Slot population and platform limits
Intel notes that the maximum supported speed can be lower when there are multiple DIMMs per channel, and recommends checking the processor documentation. Two sticks on a board with four slots may need to go in specific slots, which the manual will show. The CPU’s supported memory speed is also a ceiling, whatever the sticks are rated for.

| Supported speed | The limits listed for your CPU and motherboard |

Before you install
- Identify your computer model, or your motherboard model and revision.
- Confirm the memory generation, form factor and maximum supported capacity.
- Read the manual for slot order and population rules.
- Check the CPU’s memory specifications and the board’s supported memory list (QVL), or run the system maker’s compatibility checker.
- If the speed matters to you, plan to set it manually in BIOS/UEFI and confirm the result there after boot.
If you’d rather avoid the question, a single matched 8GB kit or a pair of identical modules is the lowest-risk way to get 16GB. Buy it based on your exact system’s generation and form factor, not on capacity alone.

If the PC won’t boot or becomes unstable
Go back to the configuration that worked before, meaning the original module or modules. Then check your system maker’s troubleshooting guidance. No single fix applies to every system. Reseating the modules, trying other slots per the manual and checking the BIOS memory settings are reasonable first steps, but the manual for your hardware takes priority.
