Mistral Shieldstral 1.0 is an open-weight moderation classifier that can assess text, images, or text-and-image input against a natural-language policy question. Mistral documents BF16 serving with vLLM on a GPU with 16GB of VRAM, and a separate Transformers example described as running with about 8GB. Those are configuration-specific vendor claims, not independent hardware tests.
What Shieldstral does
Shieldstral is a classifier, not a general-purpose moderation service. You give it content and a policy question; it returns a yes-or-no decision with a score derived from the probabilities of the two answers. Example questions include whether content promotes violence against a protected group, whether an image is safe to show to a minor, or whether an assistant refused a request. Mistral describes the approach in its announcement.

The model can evaluate a prompt, an assistant response, a prompt-response pair, an image, or an image accompanied by text. Its intended distinction is that the policy is expressed in ordinary language, letting a deployment adapt the question to its moderation needs rather than relying only on a fixed set of labels. That flexibility does not remove the need to define and test the policy carefully.
How a moderation request is structured
Mistral’s model card organizes an input into three parts: an instruction, a yes-or-no query, and the document being evaluated. The instruction sets the evaluation context and strictness; the query asks one policy question; the document contains the text or image material. The official model card recommends using one query per policy when separate decisions are needed. A broader safe-or-unsafe question can cover multiple categories in the instruction, but it should be validated against the distinctions the application actually needs.

Because the model answers one yes-or-no question at a time, checking several independent policies may require several queries. Combining them into a single broad rule can be simpler, but may obscure which policy triggered a decision. Choose the format according to whether downstream systems need a single overall decision or distinct policy outcomes.
Scores and threshold selection
The output can be treated as a binary answer or scored using the relative probabilities of “yes” and “no.” Mistral’s examples use a 0.5 threshold, but neither that example nor the model establishes a universally appropriate cutoff. A false positive can block acceptable material; a false negative can let content through that the policy was meant to catch. The balance depends on the application and its review process.

Before deployment, evaluate candidate thresholds on representative examples from your own content and policies. Measure both kinds of errors, examine borderline cases, and decide whether uncertain cases should be escalated for human review. The cookbook shows an example scoring workflow in its policy moderation guide; its example threshold is a starting point, not a substitute for calibration.
Can it run on one 16GB GPU?
According to Mistral’s model card, BF16 deployment with vLLM fits within 16GB of GPU memory. The card recommends vLLM and gives this serving command:

vllm serve mistralai/Shieldstral-1.0-3B --max-model-len 32768Mistral’s cookbook separately describes a Transformers example that runs on a single GPU with about 8GB of VRAM, and lists at least 8GB or a Colab T4/A100 as its GPU prerequisite. These statements refer to different documented configurations; the cookbook’s lower figure should not be read as a guarantee for every runtime or workload, nor as equivalent to the card’s BF16 vLLM claim.
Memory needs and practical capacity depend on runtime settings, precision, context length, and workload. Mistral’s published guidance does not establish throughput, latency, or performance on a particular GPU. The available deployment options are self-hosted: the cookbook says there is no Mistral API endpoint. Official materials document Transformers and vLLM workflows, while the model card also lists llama.cpp and SGLang.

Model size, license, and supported inputs
Mistral uses “3B” in the model’s public-facing name, while the parameter table in its documentation lists 3.8 billion parameters. The weights are published under the Apache 2.0 license, and Mistral labels the release a public preview. See the Shieldstral 1.0 documentation for the release specification.
The model card says Shieldstral is built on Ministral-3-3B-Base-2512 with a native Pixtral vision encoder. It lists support for English, French, Spanish, German, Italian, Portuguese, Dutch, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Arabic, and Russian. The card says training sequences reached 32,000 tokens; although it describes 256,000-token context as theoretically supported, it recommends staying within the 32,000-token training range.

A listed language or supported image input does not establish equal moderation quality across dialects, image types, or real-world content. Mistral says multilingual coverage, longer-document robustness, and broader multimodal safety remain areas of ongoing work in its release announcement.

The results below are reported in Mistral’s model card, not independently reproduced. They show strong results on several tasks, but not a universal lead; scores are F1 values for the named benchmark rows.

The table’s uneven results matter more than a single headline comparison: Shieldstral tops some listed multimodal rows, while another model scores higher on LlavaGuard, and comparison models edge it on several prompt, response, and refusal rows. Benchmark rankings do not show how the model will perform on a particular organization’s content or policy. The full task tables are in the model card.
Mistral’s 2026 technical report also reports 84.9% average F1 on text-safety benchmarks, 83.8% average F1 on multimodal-safety benchmarks, and 91.3% F1 on a fine-grained policy-adaptability evaluation. It describes approximately 54.1 million curated or generated samples. These are publisher-reported figures; the report’s abstract is available at arXiv.
What to evaluate before choosing it
Shieldstral is a plausible option when self-hosting and natural-language policy questions fit the deployment. Assess it against the alternatives using the requirements that matter for your system:

- Task: Test prompt screening, response screening, refusal detection, and image moderation separately if you need more than one.
- Policy fit: Build a representative evaluation set for your own rules, including borderline examples, and validate the actual policy wording.
- Error costs: Select thresholds based on the consequences of false positives and false negatives, and define a path for uncertain cases.
- Serving constraints: Confirm memory use with your chosen framework, precision, context length, and expected workload rather than treating a vendor configuration claim as a hardware guarantee.
- Language and length: Test your target languages and document lengths; the listed languages and theoretical context limit do not establish equal quality across all cases.
- Deployment model: Weigh open-weight, self-hosted operation against the convenience of a hosted moderation service.
