Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. If it is missing, focus on its connection, pairing, selection, or—on Windows—drivers. If it is listed but silent, check mute controls, permissions, input level, and the affected app’s settings. A single failure does not prove the microphone is broken.
Start with the symptom: missing or silent?
- Not listed as an input: reconnect a wired or USB mic, check Bluetooth pairing and connection, and confirm any physical mute is off. Then follow the operating-system checks below.
- Listed but not picking up sound: select it as the input, check its input level and mute controls, and test whether the problem affects every app or just one.
A headset boom may mute when raised, and a Bluetooth headset may be uncharged or connected to another device. These are worth checking before changing software settings.

Fix microphone detection on Windows 11
Check the input and run a test
- Open Settings > System > Sound > Input.
- Select the microphone you intend to use. If it is Bluetooth, Windows lets you add a Bluetooth microphone from the Input section.
- Open the selected input’s properties and choose Start test. Speak normally, stop the test, and play the sample. Adjust Input volume if necessary.
If Windows does not list the device, reconnect it and check its power, pairing, and physical mute. If it is listed but the test records nothing, continue with permissions and app-level checks.
Allow microphone access
- Go to Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone.
- Turn on Microphone access and Let apps access your microphone.
- Allow access for the relevant Store app if it has an individual toggle. For conventional desktop software, turn on Let desktop apps access your microphone. Desktop apps do not appear in the individual Store-app list.
Microsoft notes: “If your microphone isn’t detected after updating Windows 11, you may need to give your apps permission to use it.” Microsoft’s microphone troubleshooting guide covers further recovery steps.

Run troubleshooting and consider drivers
If the microphone remains undetected, open Settings > System > Sound and, under Advanced, choose the input devices troubleshooter. If that does not resolve the issue, Microsoft’s documented next steps include reinstalling the audio driver in Device Manager, restarting, scanning for hardware changes if needed, and updating the driver. Use Microsoft or your computer manufacturer’s support instructions rather than unverified driver-download sites.
Fix microphone detection on Windows 10
- Check the cable or connection, physical mute, selected input, and microphone test in Sound settings.
- Open Settings > Privacy > Microphone. Enable access for the device and apps, including desktop-app access where applicable.
- If the mic still is not detected, use Microsoft’s Windows audio troubleshooting and Device Manager recovery guidance. The documented Recording Audio troubleshooter and interface labels can vary by update and device.

Check microphone access on a Mac
On a Mac, the documented permission route depends on the macOS version:
- macOS Ventura or later: Apple menu > System Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone.
- macOS Monterey, Big Sur, Catalina, or Mojave: System Preferences > Security & Privacy > Privacy > Microphone.
Enable the affected app, quit it, then reopen it and try recording again. Apple’s guidance covers built-in microphones, external USB microphones, and audio interfaces. If the microphone works everywhere except one app
If the operating system’s test captures sound but one program does not, the device is being detected; check the app’s own input selector and mute state. For a web app, also check the browser’s permission for that site.
For Microsoft Teams, the device controls are under Settings > Devices or the meeting’s microphone dropdown. Microsoft also advises checking Windows or macOS access, browser settings when using Teams on the web, and whether a Bluetooth mic is charged and disconnected from other devices. These are Teams-specific examples; other apps may use different menus. See Microsoft’s Teams device-settings guidance.

When to try another microphone
After the connection, permission, input, and app checks, borrowing or trying a separate USB microphone can help distinguish a problem with the original mic from a broader computer issue, or serve as a workaround. Check that its connector and compatibility match your computer; an external USB mic being supported as a Mac input does not guarantee that every model works with every PC or Mac.
