If a command is missing from a Windows 11 File Explorer right-click menu, first choose Show more options or press Shift+F10. Then check what you right-clicked, how many files are selected, and whether the command belongs to a third-party app. Those details determine whether the command is in another menu, intentionally hidden, or unavailable in that app’s integration.
Start with the two Windows 11 File Explorer menus
Windows 11 File Explorer uses a streamlined context menu. To check for commands that appear in the older menu, right-click the file or folder and select Show more options. Microsoft says not all Windows 10 extensions appear in the streamlined menu, but they remain available through Show more options when supported. Microsoft’s File Explorer guidance notes that app developers may update their extensions over time.

You can also select an item and press Shift+F10, or use the keyboard menu key if your keyboard has one, to open the legacy context menu. Microsoft described this behavior in its Windows 11 context-menu design post dated July 19, 2021. That post said no commands had been removed entirely from the legacy menu; it did not guarantee that every app command would appear in the new streamlined menu.

Check what you right-clicked
A right-click on a file or folder can show different commands from a right-click on empty space inside that folder. If a command seems to have disappeared, try the same action on the item itself and on the folder background. This is a diagnostic check, not a guarantee that every missing command will be explained by the click target. A Microsoft Q&A thread from February 28, 2023 described a user seeing different results between a folder and its empty space; treat that report as an example rather than evidence of a universal cause. For Open, Print, or Edit, check the selection size
If Open, Print, or Edit is missing while you have many files selected, reduce the selection and check again. Microsoft documents that these entries are intentionally hidden when more than 15 files are selected. The documented behavior is in a Microsoft Learn article about Windows 10 (all editions), last updated February 12, 2026; confirm your Windows version and build rather than assuming the same threshold applies to every release. For that specific multiple-selection behavior, Microsoft documents the registry value HKCUSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerMultipleInvokePromptMinimum, with a default of 15 in decimal, as a way to change the threshold. Microsoft advises keeping any increase reasonable and limiting it to environments where it is needed. This is not a general fix for arbitrary missing context-menu entries; do not change the registry unless you have confirmed this is the relevant case and understand the implications.

If an app’s command is missing from both menus
Identify the exact app and command, then check that app’s settings or support guidance for a context-menu integration option. If the command is absent from both the streamlined and legacy menus, the app may not have installed or registered its extension, or the extension may be incompatible. Microsoft says developers may need to update older extensions to support the newer menu and directs users to ask the app developer about availability and timing. Reinstalling is not a guaranteed remedy.
Check whether newer menu controls are available on your build
Microsoft’s August 17, 2026 announcement described customizable context-menu settings for Windows Insiders, including controls for built-in actions, app extensions, submenu visibility, and the layout of common commands. The announcement said the feature was rolling out to Insiders; it does not establish that the controls are available to every Windows 11 user. If these checks do not identify the cause, note the exact command, Windows version and build, number of selected items, and whether you right-clicked an item or the folder background. That information helps distinguish a menu-layout difference from a selection rule or an app-specific issue.
