Use /weather clear to stop rain, /weather rain to start precipitation, and /weather thunder to start a thunderstorm. Commands only work when your world or server grants command permission. Bedrock Edition calls that permission Allow Cheats; Java Edition uses Allow Commands or operator permissions. If a timed change keeps reverting, disable the weather cycle with /gamerule doweathercycle false before setting the weather.

Minecraft’s three weather states
Minecraft has three command-selectable weather states: clear, rain, and thunder. The state changes precipitation, sky effects, and lightning behavior, but it does not change the world’s time of day.

| Weather state | Command | What happens | Cold-biome result |
|---|---|---|---|
| Clear | /weather clear |
Precipitation stops and the sky returns to clear conditions. | Normal clear weather |
| Rain | /weather rain |
Rain falls in biomes where rain is possible. | Rain changes to snow |
| Thunder | /weather thunder |
Rain, lightning, thunder sounds and darker storm conditions occur. | The storm appears as a blizzard |
In a cold biome, the same command still selects the same weather state; the visible precipitation changes because the biome is cold. A thunderstorm is therefore not a separate fourth state. It is the thunder setting rendered as a storm or blizzard according to the biome.

Enter these commands in chat with the leading slash. Replace the optional duration only when you need the state to last for a controlled period.
#1 Best Overall
| Goal | Command | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Stop rain or a storm | /weather clear |
Changes immediately to clear weather. |
| Make it rain | /weather rain |
Shows rain, or snow in a cold biome. |
| Make it thunder | /weather thunder |
Adds lightning and thunder to precipitation; cold biomes show a blizzard. |
| Check the current state (Bedrock) | /weather query |
Reports whether the current state is clear, rain or thunder. |
| Run a 30-second thunderstorm (Bedrock example) | /weather thunder 600 |
Bedrock measures duration in game ticks; 600 ticks equals 30 seconds. |
Microsoft Learn’s Bedrock command documentation defines the syntax as /weather <type> [duration]. On Bedrock, leaving out the duration allows a random weather period of 300 to 900 seconds. The exact duration behavior and accepted syntax can differ between editions, so use the game’s command autocomplete when a Java command includes a duration or when a server has custom command settings.
How to stop rain in Bedrock Edition
Turn on the required permission
- Pause the game and open Settings.
- Open the world settings and locate Allow Cheats.
- Turn Allow Cheats on, then return to the world.
- Open chat and enter
/weather clear.
Bedrock single-player worlds require Allow Cheats for weather commands. Minecraft warns that enabling cheats permanently disables achievement unlocking for that world, even if you later turn cheats off. Make that choice before enabling the setting if achievements matter to you.
Keep the sky clear instead of clearing it once
/weather clear changes the current state, but the normal weather cycle can select rain or thunder again later. To lock the world to clear weather on Bedrock, run:
/gamerule doweathercycle false
/weather clear 6000
The gamerule stops automatic weather changes. The second command gives clear weather a 6,000-tick duration; the locked cycle prevents the normal system from replacing it. To restore natural weather, run /gamerule doweathercycle true on editions that support that gamerule syntax.
How to stop rain in Java Edition
Enable commands in a single-player world
- When creating a world, enable Allow Commands in the world options.
- For an existing single-player world, open the pause menu and use the world options to allow commands if that edition and world configuration provide the option.
- Open chat and enter
/weather clear.
Java uses the label Allow Commands, rather than Bedrock’s Allow Cheats. The command name is still /weather, but Java and Bedrock do not always parse optional arguments identically. If the game rejects a duration, type /weather and follow the suggestions shown by autocomplete instead of copying a Bedrock-only form.

Servers and Realms
On a Java server or Realm, you need the operator level or permission node that allows weather and gamerule commands. A regular player cannot bypass that permission by changing local settings. Ask the server owner for the required role; the owner may grant weather access without granting every administrative command, depending on the server’s permission plugin.

Bedrock expresses the optional weather duration in game ticks. Microsoft Learn states that 20 game ticks equal one second. Convert a desired number of seconds by multiplying by 20:
| Desired duration | Bedrock ticks | Example |
|---|---|---|
| 10 seconds | 200 | /weather rain 200 |
| 30 seconds | 600 | /weather thunder 600 |
| 5 minutes | 6,000 | /weather clear 6000 |
| 10 minutes | 12,000 | /weather rain 12000 |
The documented 600-tick thunder example is 30 seconds because 600 divided by 20 equals 30. A duration is not a real-world millisecond timer: it follows the game’s tick processing, so severe lag can affect how quickly the world processes events.
If you omit the duration on Bedrock, the command uses the game’s normal random interval of 300–900 seconds. That range is a weather duration, not a guarantee that every storm will last the same amount of time. Use an explicit value when building a timed event, testing a redstone system, or recording a tutorial.
Prevent weather from changing back
There are two different controls: the weather command selects the current state, while the doweathercycle gamerule determines whether the game can automatically select another state. A timed command can appear to fail when the cycle is still active and replaces your selection.

Choose the duration appropriate to your event. When the event is over and you want natural weather again, set doweathercycle to true. If your edition reports that the gamerule or its value is unknown, use autocomplete to confirm the edition’s spelling and accepted values.
Bedrock and Java differences at a glance
| Detail | Bedrock Edition | Java Edition |
|---|---|---|
| Single-player permission label | Allow Cheats | Allow Commands |
| Achievement impact | Turning on Allow Cheats permanently disables achievements in that world. | The Bedrock achievement warning does not apply to Java’s system. |
| Basic weather commands | /weather clear, /weather rain, /weather thunder |
The same basic command names |
| Weather query | /weather query is documented |
Use the edition’s autocomplete and available commands; this Bedrock query form may not be accepted. |
| Duration documentation | Optional duration is game ticks; 20 ticks equal 1 second. | Duration parsing and accepted forms can differ by version; check autocomplete. |
| Multiplayer access | World owner or server permissions are required. | Operator or server permission level is required. |
The command family is shared, but permission labels and argument parsing are not. Always identify the edition before diagnosing an error, and include the version when asking a server administrator for help.
What rain and thunder actually do
Rain
Rain is precipitation without the lightning and thunder effects of a storm. It darkens the sky and creates the visual and audio effects associated with rainfall. In a cold biome, the precipitation is rendered as snow instead, so /weather rain can be the correct command even when the player sees snow.
Thunder
Thunder is the storm state: precipitation plus lightning, thunder sounds and darker storm conditions. Lightning can create hazards for exposed builds and mobs, so use clear weather during delicate construction or long unattended sessions. In cold biomes, thunder is rendered as a blizzard rather than ordinary rain, while retaining the storm state.
Clear
Clear weather removes precipitation. It does not remove clouds or alter the daylight cycle, and it does not change the biome. If you need permanent daylight, that is a separate time or gamerule operation, not a weather command.

Reliable procedures for common goals
Stop a storm immediately
- Confirm that commands are enabled and that you have permission.
- Run
/weather clear. - If rain or thunder returns later, run
/gamerule doweathercycle false, then apply a clear duration such as/weather clear 6000.
Create a short thunderstorm for an event
- Enable commands or obtain the required server permission.
- On Bedrock, stop automatic changes with
/gamerule doweathercycle falseif the event must last exactly as selected. - Run
/weather thunder 600for the documented 30-second Bedrock example. - Restore natural changes with
/gamerule doweathercycle trueafter the event.
Check whether a Bedrock command worked
- Run
/weather query. - Read the returned state: clear, rain or thunder.
- Compare that state with your biome. Snow or a blizzard in a cold biome still indicates rain or thunder, respectively.
Set a long clear-building session
- Disable the weather cycle with
/gamerule doweathercycle false. - Set clear weather with an explicit duration, for example
/weather clear 12000for 10 minutes on Bedrock. - Re-enable the cycle when you want ordinary weather behavior.
Why a weather command does not work
“You do not have permission” or an unknown-command message
- Bedrock single-player: verify Allow Cheats is enabled in the world settings.
- Java single-player: verify Allow Commands is enabled for the world.
- Server or Realm: ask for the operator or permission level that includes weather commands.
- Check the spelling and include the leading slash:
/weather clear.
The command is accepted but rain returns
You changed the current state, but the automatic cycle remains enabled. Run /gamerule doweathercycle false before setting a timed state. If the gamerule command itself fails, your permission level may not include gamerule changes.
The game rejects the duration
Duration arguments are edition- and version-sensitive. Bedrock documents ticks, while Java may expose different argument parsing. Type the command prefix and use autocomplete. On Bedrock, check that the duration is a whole number of ticks, such as 600 rather than “30 seconds.”

The weather command is working: rain becomes snow in cold biomes. Move to a warmer biome to see liquid rain, or use /weather clear if you want no precipitation anywhere in the current area.
You expected thunder but see a blizzard
Thunder becomes a blizzard in cold biomes. Use /weather query on Bedrock to verify the state, or test the same command in a warmer biome. The visual difference is biome-dependent, not evidence that the command selected ordinary rain.
Nothing changes on a modified server
Server software, plugins, command wrappers and permission systems can intercept vanilla commands. Ask the administrator whether a plugin controls weather, whether the world is locked to a weather state, and which command syntax that server exposes. Do not assume a client-side setting can override server authority.

Practical command checklist
- Identify whether you are playing Bedrock or Java Edition.
- Confirm command permission before troubleshooting syntax.
- Use the exact weather type:
clear, rainorthunder. - Remember that Bedrock durations are ticks: multiply seconds by 20.
- Use
/weather queryon Bedrock when you need to verify the current state. - Disable
doweathercyclewhen an automatic change would override a timed selection. - Interpret snow and blizzards as cold-biome versions of rain and thunder.
- Re-enable the weather cycle after a controlled event if you want natural changes again.
Quick reference examples
| Situation | Bedrock command sequence | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Clear the sky once | /weather clear |
Stops current precipitation; natural cycling remains enabled. |
| Keep building in clear weather | /gamerule doweathercycle false/weather clear 12000 |
Clear conditions for a 10-minute, 12,000-tick selection with cycling locked. |
| Stage a 30-second storm | /gamerule doweathercycle false/weather thunder 600 |
Thunder for the documented 600-tick period, rendered as a blizzard in cold biomes. |
| Return to natural weather | /gamerule doweathercycle true |
Allows the ordinary weather cycle again. |
These examples assume Bedrock syntax and the permissions needed to run both commands. For Java, keep the weather command names but confirm duration and gamerule arguments with in-game autocomplete for your version.

Can I stop rain without cheats?
Not with the vanilla weather command. The command requires the appropriate command permission, which is Allow Cheats in Bedrock or Allow Commands/operator access in Java.
Does /weather clear disable storms forever?
No. It changes the current weather. Disable doweathercycle if you need the selected state to remain instead of allowing automatic weather changes.
How long does weather last if I omit a duration?
On Bedrock, Microsoft Learn documents a random 300–900-second interval when the optional duration is omitted. Use an explicit tick count for predictable timing.
What is the difference between rain and thunder?
Rain is ordinary precipitation. Thunder adds lightning, thunder sounds and storm conditions; in a cold biome it appears as a blizzard.

Will enabling Bedrock cheats disable achievements permanently?
Yes. Minecraft’s official Bedrock guidance warns that achievements are permanently disabled for that world once Allow Cheats is enabled, even if you later turn cheats off.
Can I use these commands in multiplayer?
Only if the server, Realm or world grants you sufficient permission. Local client settings cannot override multiplayer permissions.
